21.01.2022 AROUND THE TRAPS The Tasmania Report..... Challenging weather continues When it rains, it pours and then the sun comes out, and then we have some frosts.... Following on from a relative cool October with a recorded 93.2mm of rainfall for Cressy in the northern midlands, things are finally starting to warm up in Tasmania. The start of November has seen a mean daily max temperature of 21.8 degrees, however late frosts on the 7th and 8th of November have caused significant damage to some autumn sown wheat crops that were in a critical flowering period. The warm, humid weather following on from good rainfall has resulted in great pasture growth but adversely caused an explosion of weed species and an elevation in disease pressure for established crops. The SFS Tasmania team has been busy the last two weeks applying late season fungicides for autumn sown cereals trials and early/mid season fungicides on spring sown cereals trial. The importance of a good fungicide program can be seen in the image below of an untreated wheat plot in a current fungicide trial. Untreated control plots in a fungicide trial being conducted by SFS in Tasmania show the importance of a good fungicide program. Brett Davey, SFS

19.01.2022 This week an exciting new Dung Beetle Project was initiated in Gippsland! In partnership with Charles Sturt University and a PhD student, a 12 month study will be investigating the amount of dung processed by 1 kg (dry mass) of a single species of dung beetle in two different seasons and measure a variety of ecosystem services related to soil quality and pasture growth rates that result from dung processing. Natalie Jenkins, SFS

17.01.2022 AROUND THE TRAPS The Gippsland Report.... This week Gippsland has seen a taste of summer, with consecutive days above 30 degrees. Very quickly everything at the Gippsland Research Farm is reaching maturity, so planning is underway for upcoming harvests. ... Rosedale has seen a bumper year for weather, so the Smart Farms Soil Acidity Trial in a canola crop was ready to harvest 2 weeks ago. With the help of a fantastic crew, 40 plots were hand harvested, left to dry in the shed and are now ready to be processed. Planning is well underway for the Farmer’s Feast Celebration Dinner, with SFS, Gippsland Agricultural Group and Gippsland Primary Health Network working together to offer an evening of good food and good company for Gippsland farmers. Drying the Hand Harvest Canola and the GAG Fodder-Silage Variety Trial. Natalie Jenkins, SFS

12.01.2022 WELCOME to Faruq Isu who has recently joined our Tasmanian trial team as a casual SFS Research & Extension Officer. Faruq was previously employed by TAP AgriCo where he conducted several duties including assisting with the setup and operations of a new grain drier. Prior to that Faruq completed his masters at the University of Tasmania investigating the incidence of high oestrogenic subterranean clover in a range of pastures in north-eastern Tasmania. ... Before moving to Australia in 2014 he worked as Assistant Operations Coordinator at the Centre for Sustainable Development at the University of Liberal Arts, Bangladesh.

11.01.2022 This week at SFS we farewelled our Tasmanian Projects and Trials Manager, Ian Herbert. Ian enjoyed his time at SFS adding value to members businesses as well as the wider agricultural community. Ian has moved on to work for Nutrien Ag as Branch Manager in Longford. The SFS team wishes Ian well in his new position and will no doubt have contact with him in the future in his new role. We are now currently sourcing a suitable replacement and in the meantime Brett Davey will tak...e responsibility of continuing the program in Tasmania with the support from the Victorian Team. 08.01.2022 Today is #AgDayAU During COVID-19 farmers have had our back, everyday continuing to grow the food and fibre, we all depend on. This National Agriculture Day, celebrate the everyday extraordinary efforts of our farmers and all that is good about Australian agriculture.

07.01.2022 Soil acidity is an important factor to watch out for in both cropping and pasture enterprises. With the temperatures starting to rise, the sun beginning to shine and flowers beginning to bloom, the mid-season assessments on trial sites are showing signs of soil acidity holding back biomass production. Grains Research and Development Corporation funded two trials (Rokewood and Stawell) as part of the ‘Innovative approaches to managing subsoil acidity in the southern grain reg...ion’. All treatments included surface lime with different subsoil treatments applied. Initial biomass weights at Rokewood indicated that the deep ripping treatment had the lowest canola biomass weights when compared to the other three treatments of surface liming, deep liming (30cm deep, 50cm wide) and deep lucerne pellets (10-30cm deep). More data will be available after harvest assessments later this year, with the mid-season assessment to occur on oats growing at the Stawell site in the coming weeks. Tahlia Bruce, SFS

07.01.2022 Spring has certainly sprung in Tasmania with the soil profile drying out significantly and many spring crops, such as poppies and spring barley being drilled into well prepared seed beds. Cereal crops are progressing quickly through stem elongation with significant amounts of urea being top-dressed onto crops where crops have established well from early sowing. There are some crops that have severely suffered during the wet autumn and winter and in some cases have been re-so...wn with spring barley. The potato harvest is normally completed by early winter has been delayed by the wet conditions, however with the onset of spring the vast majority of crops left unharvested through winter are now out of the ground. Dry land pastures are flourishing in the spring conditions with significant amounts of dry matter being available for lambing ewes, The weather has been kind for lambing with producers happy with lambing results, for example mixed aged, XB ewes scanned with twins, stocked for lambing at 11 ewes/ha have marked 178% lambs, a very pleasing result. Ian Herbert, SFS Tasmania

05.01.2022 AROUND THE TRAPS South West Victorian Report..... The team at SFS are preparing to desiccate canola in the coming weeks whilst monitoring for army worm and native budworm continues. Next on the list, will be desiccation of faba beans and some feed barley. The good season has created higher weed pressure, making desiccation a tool to stop weed seed set. ... In the past fortnight, sowing of a legume trial has also taken place with the summer iteration of the alternative legumes project in collaboration with Agriculture Victoria and GRDC. Spring sown barely has bolted out of the ground thanks to the available moisture only a week after sowing. Harvest preparations are well underway, with planning meetings and lists of jobs for November being put together. This year, we will again have GrainCorp facilities at the Inverleigh trial site for growers to bring their samples in for pre-testing. Greta Duff, SFS

04.01.2022 SFS is proud to be a project partner in the Mixed Cover Crops for Sustainable Farming project. This project is evaluating cover crops in a range of environments across south eastern Australia to access the impacts of cover cropping on: - Soil health - Nutrient cycling - Organic carbon... - Invertebrate populations - Soil moisture Suitability of different plant species is being screened; and the optimum timing and method to terminate the cover crops is being carried out.

04.01.2022 A project titled More sub clover is currently being delivered by Southern Farming Systems thanks to Meat & Livestock Australia Pastures containing oestrogenic clovers are thought to be widespread throughout Australia, especially in pastures sown prior to the1970’s. The main indication of excessive oestrogenic clover is repeatedly low lambing percentages (less than 70%) even when ewe condition, available feed and ram health are all adequate. This can also be evident in an u...nusual number of difficult births/prolepses’ and the development of urethral blockages in wethers that can cause death. More recently bred cultivars of sub clover offer better disease and insect resistance and low oestrogen content. This means improved long-term winter production and animal performance. This project is developing pasture information and diagnostic products that help you reveal the potential of your pasture. Jess Brogden. Oestrogenic Sub Clover cultivars Dinninup, Yarloop and Dwalganup
