23.01.2022 We’ve been busy working on more hazardous tree removals this week for VicRoads. During a pre-clearance inspection, three sugar gliders were found in deadwood hanging precariously over the road. Fortunately, the trees were able to be habitat pruned to improve safety, rather than completely removed. This allowed us to safely relocate these little cuties to another hollow in the same tree. Where possible, this should always be considered so that animals aren’t displaced or left exposed to predators.

22.01.2022 Round of applause for these legends! They are helping me give new life to this 4 tonne section of hollow mountain ash by craning it down intact to place in the understory. Unfortunately the tree needed to be removed due to extensive rot through the base and higher in main stem - a bit of an issue when it’s leaning over a busy road. A good example of hazardous tree removal done the right way! @mcleodtrees @beavsack @izzy_rascal5 @simon_bellman @wherever_the_wild_things_are @vicroads and of course Dave, Deano and Pop. 19.01.2022 My good friend and amazing bat researcher Danielle Eastick posted this today in response to an article in The Conversation. She summed it up so nicely that I don't want to change a word. An important read: "Here is an article that was published yesterday in The Conversation about coronaviruses and bats in Australia. There have been some horrible acts done to bats by the general public over the past few months stemming from fear, which has been in no way helped by the media, s...o if we could get some positive, science-based information out there it would really help! Some of this has been very close to home, with residents of Kew asking for the flying fox colony at Yarra Bend Park to be moved or culled. The article touches on why bats aren’t to blame for the current pandemic, why we can’t just move bats from urban areas and how important they are to our ecosystems. You can help by sharing this article to your social media and other networks. The article is written by two bat researchers, a wildlife disease ecologist and EcoHealth Alliance’s Science and Policy Advisor for China and Southeast Asia". https://theconversation.com/no-aussie-bats-wont-give-you-co

04.01.2022 Does that hazardous tree need to be removed? Or can it be retained through habitat pruning?? Given it takes over 100 years for a decent sized hollow to form, it’s always a great outcome if they can be retained for native wildlife. Heading into winter, I hope everyone has somewhere as cozy to sleep as these two sugar gliders! #fauna #habitatpruning #habitatsalvage #fauna #hollowsforhabitat #cozy #winter #animals #wildlifephotography #arborist #ecologist
