25.01.2022 Hmmmm....this inability to get out on the water - whilst difficult - does 'potentially' have an upside.....let's hope that without the Angling pressure on streams in the North-East - especially post bushfire damage....the trout have an opportunity to thrive (at least for the short term) and when we are allowed to return to the water (which I am hopeful) next season, we 'should' enjoy a most positive outcome. To all our clients & friends...stay safe....
24.01.2022 Earlier this week I ventured up the Buckland River to check the river conditions with the President of the Australian Trout Foundation - Terry GEORGE. Sadly there is not much positive news to come from that visitation. The river has fallen foul of the fire debris and ash, which has turned the river virtually black and looking very sad and I must admit I felt some moisture swell to the eyes.....BUT we did agree that with a solid flush of rain and flood the impurities will go downstream. So maybe in the near future it will recover, but importantly.... some rains are possibly coming....let's hope so!!!
23.01.2022 Well, as expected...and....probably deserved, Premier Dan ANDREWS has relaxed some issues surrounding the COVID-19 restrictions.....thankfully Fishing is one of the relaxed announcements (with obvious 'social distancing' being adhered to)....so with one more sleep - or for those absolutely desperate to be hitting the streams tonight - I wish you well. However, a word of warning for those in and around the Ovens, Kiewa and Buckland Rivers.....they are carrying some serious wat...er...so if wading - be careful....we at Southern Fly Fishing Adventures will most likely wait until the new season before taking clients out due to the water levels and flows, this will also continue to 'ease' the fishing pressure on these rivers which are still recovering from the bushfire issues. Woohoo!!! we are back with a sense of relief......be safe out there!!!Cheers...... See more
20.01.2022 Recent mixed weather has delayed the ability to get into the water. Last week snow to very low levels surprised many with an Arctic blast .... then some very heavy rains. Rivers were turned into dirty runs. So now we wait....until they clear, and with mixed temperatures warm/cool, some settling of the weather would be nice....looks like more rains are coming, but whilst the rains are good, some warm & settled in nicer!!
18.01.2022 Gee wizz....I have a quick flick in New Zealand and the world goes CRAZY!!! Yes...we all know what is happening around this crazy place and because of my LOVE of NZ......I have been forced to undergo the 14 day isolation period......which of course means....no clients for the next 2 weeks (at least)... so.......sadly no contact with the 'outside' world....although one could suggest in this instance the 'inside' world!!! Sorry folks .... no Guiding in the determined time frame. See you when I am FREE!!!
17.01.2022 As we are at the end of the 2019/2020 season, we reflect on what has been an extremely strange time in this world which we live.....bushfires ravaged several States over the Summer, including our High Country streams putting a serious dent in our capacity to service ANY clients. Then, during & after a fantastic trip to New Zealand - the dreaded Covid hit the world. We are now heading in the right direction with restrictions easing & with some luck (& no second spike) we might... find the new 'post-Covid' world might resemble something of the past?? We look with anticipation of a good season when we return on the FIRST Saturday of September (5th). Perhaps with the lack of fishing pressure on streams - given the Covid restrictions - we might be looking at a solid season for Trout in the High Country streams...from all of us at SOUTHERN Fly Fishing ADVENTURES we wish all our clients old & new the best for the off-season. Take care & stay safe...... See more
15.01.2022 Hmmm....this hot and windy weather is NOT helping our Trout streams. The river levels are very low and we seriously need a nice drop of rain to freshen our streams. Added to our woes will be ash & burnt matter entering our streams at possibly a very perilous time. We had a small amount of rain on Thursday but much more is needed. Obviously, at this difficult time we are not conducting Fly Fishing Packages & we will need to make sure we are safe when we do. We will endeavour to keep this page updated as to when we recommence our tours. For all of us out there STAY SAFE!!
14.01.2022 Well, sadly we have been in Stage 4 (Metro) & Stage 3 (Regional) lock-downs due to the Covid situation. Whether you believe or not.......we are where we are!! AND we all have an opinion on this - right or wrong - & as disappointing as it is .... we will just have to wait until it's over or given the green light to resume 'life'. This lock-down time has been a time to reflect on what is important in our own personal lives....FAMILY, FRIENDS & quality of time shared. We hope th...at you are all safe (or as best as can be) & we salute those on the front line of this dreadful situation. Well done - THANK YOU! We're not sure what to expect in the upcoming season (only a fortnight or so away).....I can inform you that given the minimal fishing pressure on our High Country streams (more recently) that there is real anticipation of an excellent season ahead...that is of course IF we can get on to those streams. We know from experience that being out in the Wilds with your energies focused on Fly Fishing - how it improves ones Mental Health - & given these strange times - we are ALL looking forward to a flick soon!!!! Take care - Be safe!! See more
14.01.2022 Victorian Premier Dan ANDREWS will be making some announcements soon regarding potential relaxing of restrictions surrounding the COVID - 19 outbreak. I am sure many people involved in the Fishing Industry with be very interested in what he may announce regarding fishing (as a whole). I personally have my opinion, but even IF the Premier does in-fact allow fishing, I think any ability for any potential client here may struggle. We have experienced the very excellent rains and... a seriously good dump of snow in the nearby Mountains only very recently and this will have a flow-on effect (pun intended). This flow 'could' be the beginning of the flush most High Country streams require post bushfire impact....this is needed to move the debris etc from the riverbeds in order for aquatic life to recommence, this obviously feeds our Trout, and I think will be a good thing looking toward the new season 2020...opening on the first Saturday of September. We look forward to the Premier's announcements. See more
12.01.2022 What a weekend of rain!!! This is fantastic for giving our High Country Streams a thorough flushing....really important in the ecology of things aquatic.....and as we turn into the serious part of Winter, the snow melt which we expect to come about September or so....should only make our streams even better........
12.01.2022 It's getting close...in fact only 5 more sleeps to go....the excitement is certainly building. The commencement of the 2020/21 stream season is close indeed & it is a time of uncertainty, but as the excitement builds we still need to be careful...the waters are flowing ...well.... quickly... in the High Country we have (in recent weeks) some solid rain and snow to low levels. This is all flowing from our smaller streams into our larger ones.....causing a slight case of concern. We're not sure whether the Opening Weekend will be one of Major celebration, but perhaps one of quiet expectation. Wishing everybody a wonderful season of fishing...tight lines!!!
11.01.2022 After what has been an extremely difficult Fly Fishing Season, with bushfires and seemingly never-ending reasons and other issues, I was able to finally get 2 clients on the water. 2 fireys from the USA (who have assisted with the very same bushfires). We spent several hours out on one of our 'special' rivers and it was very nice to see the 2 have a great time. Several fish were missed (which was a little disappointing) but great to see so many fish in this river. The river itself appeared very healthy and crystal clear water. We were able to spot fish some distance upstream. A great day!!
09.01.2022 Well things have - clearly - gone from BAD to WORSE!!! After returning from New Zealand & completing my 14 day self-isolation the Government has now BANNED fishing!!!! This is adding up....bushfires impacting on Local Alpine streams - causing the cancellation of many Clients who were booked-in AND were trying to book-in. Most of these were phone queries - with the odd - person-to-person - queries....and now this.....I do understand the ideal.....but not sure about the pract...icality??? I do believe that this has just about CANCELLED the rest of this season?? I wait with bated breath....... FOR THOSE WITH GIFT CERTIFICATES & are yet to undertake them...I will ensure YOUR Gift Certificate will be actioned. (however - Gift Certificates expiring over 3 years WILL NOT be)...... I hope everyone's obeying the rules ...... please take care of yourselves.....let's hope we get through this sooner rather than later!!!!! See more
02.01.2022 So, with the weather being warmish early, I thought I'd head out on the First day of the season for a quick flick.....warm & sunny with a slight breeze but certainly not a lot to worry about, I headed to a fave spot on one of our smaller but generally rewarding streams. Within the 4th cast I was on & probably more surprised than the fish!! I ran the fly along a deeper run quite close to the undercut of the bank and from the depths....whack!! And with gusto this Rainbow hit th...e fly!! Shortly, I retrieved this little girl in....in excellent condition. Then another and another. Within 30 minutes I had caught 6 Trout.... even I was a little surprised. I also headed out on the Monday for another short time out....and again was surprised at the vigor in which these Trout were hitting the fly. All in great condition and all keen for the fly...another great day....and a wonderful start to the season..... See more
01.01.2022 We have known this for a long time....Fly Fishing is a great alternative!!! STAY HAPPY!!!
