23.01.2022 This is one of the reasons why we'll need to be patient to get access to the Wingello trails after the Morton fire is extinguished. Forestry Corporation will need to salvage as much of the burnt plantation timber in Wingello State Forest as they can over the next few months before it is too late. We'll be looking to use that waiting time to plan our repair and recovery efforts, and if possible, obtain funding support for that work. We'll let you know as soon as we can about ways you can help with that planning process. https://www.smh.com.au//massive-salvage-effort-for-bushfir
16.01.2022 While the trails at Wingello will remain closed for several months due to the damage caused by the Morton fire in January 2020, it's an opportunity to go ride trails elsewhere and support other fire-affected communities. Here's a plea to #RollOnBack to the High Country in Victoria, a short half-day drive south! https://youtu.be/wAgDDxBumnI
14.01.2022 UPDATE: 21 June 2020 We met with Forestry Corporation late last week, and unfortunately, the likelihood is that Wingello State Forest will not reopen before late October. This is due to the intensive forest management activities (salvage logging and replanting) currently in progress. Realistically, we need to acknowledge that potentially, it may be the end of the year before the Forest reopens. We are currently preparing for working bees, and hope to commence these during ...July. We have to establish appropriate protocols to manage access and to adhere to appropriate Covid-19 requirements, as well as to ensure suitable supervision - the works required are more than simply raking the trails. Consequently, we expect that there will be formal registration procedures, and a limit for the number of people at any given working bee. There is much work to do, so we will appreciate all the assistance we can get. Keep your eyes and ears open, folks - we're looking forward to your support to rebuild the trails we all love to ride in Wingello.
12.01.2022 UPDATE (early January 2021): Wingello State Forest is still CLOSED. The mountain bike trails are still CLOSED. Salvage logging is continuing across the entire area of the forest impacted by the January 2020 bushfires. The latest advice from Forestry Corporation is that this will continue until at least April 2021, and even when Wingello SF reopens, it is likely that some areas, including Forest Camp, will remain closed until the end of the year.... Highlands Trails have been planning the trail repair works and procuring funding, and will be holding a public meeting soon to discuss this process. Watch out for future posts about volunteer working bees to help us repair these trails.
08.01.2022 WINGELLO MTB TRAILS STATUS UPDATE: 9 March 2020 TRAILS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE We've been able to get access to some high quality aerial imagery of Wingello SF taken following the Morton fire in January. It's shown us that most of the singletrack network has been impacted quite severely. The image here is of the switchbacks at the western end of Love Love Love. We appear to have lost all built structures, and probably all of our signage as well, and there is evidence o...f many fallen trees in places. The impact of the heavy rains in mid-February is unknown. We're talking with Forestry Corporation about getting access to inspect the trails, and hope to have an update on actual trail condition within the next fortnight. This will then form the basis for development of a recovery plan. However, there will be intensive recovery logging happening in Wingello SF for the next 8-12 months, which will continue to restrict access into the forest, and to the trails. Remember - the Wingello SF is still closed, and the MTB trails will remain closed until further notice. Thanks for your patience. See more
08.01.2022 UPDATE (early June 2020): Wingello State Forest is still CLOSED (see below for link). The mountain bike trails are still CLOSED. Salvage logging is under way across the entire area of the forest impacted by the January 2020 bushfires, and will continue for several months.... Highlands Trails have begun planning the trail repair works, and we have now completed detailed walkthroughs of several trail sectors near the old quarry. Watch out for information about upcoming volunteer working bees to help us repair these trails. https://www.forestrycorporation.com.au//wingello-state-for Photo taken 31 May looking east across burnt (young) pines to Morton National Park from the old airstrip locality.
04.01.2022 Whilst the Wingello trails are closed, it's an opportunity to go and ride further afield, and support other communities affected by this summer's catastrophic bushfires. The Snowies are calling ...
