24.01.2022 Meet Cooper! Cooper is our IT Trainee who has just completed his Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology and will shortly be undertaking a Certificate IV. Esperance born and bred and with a love for digital media, Cooper jumped at the opportunity to join Southern Ports one year ago at 18-years-of-age and is based at our Port of Esperance. When not on the Southern Ports IT Help Desk, Cooper is often found at the beach, four-wheel driving and streaming video games with friends.



23.01.2022 Safety is a pillar of our business. We want our Ports to provide a safe workplace - one where our team members can be assured they'll return home to their families each day. As part of our safety awareness and education, our Port of Esperance held a competition for our team's families to draw what safety means which will be used to create a 2021 calendar. 23.01.2022 In memory of Jason Wos, a Southern Ports teammate, Julie-Anne Wos will be hosting a fundraiser for Beyond Blue later this month, Garden Beyond the Blue Letterbox, to raise awareness and funds to support anxiety and depression. Jason's garden was his happy place and has varieties of orchards, bromeliads, bamboo, tree ferns, succulents, a mini rainforest of palms. The garden will be open on Sunday 18 October from 10am to 2pm at 97 Harvey Road, Warrenup.... 21.01.2022 Biannual works will commence at our Port of Bunbury over the next couple of weeks to help us maintain safe draughts for ships to move within the Port. 19.01.2022 This weekend we're excited to be sponsoring Shift by the Bay with an activity zone including mini golf, rock climbing and a mechanical surfboard. Shift by the Bay is organised by the City of Bunbury's Youth Advisory Council to bring the community together, especially young people aged between 12 and 25. Everyone's welcome - we can't wait to see you there!

18.01.2022 Did you know that docking a huge cargo ship may take hours because of its vast size? Moving and positioning the ship into the correct position requires the support of smaller tug boats, which will either push the ship into place, or pull it using ropes from different sides. These tug boats in our Ports are operated by our friends at Svitzer Australia and Mackenzie Marine and Towage Pty Ltd. Weather and congestion can also impact the docking process.

11.01.2022 Fun Fact Friday: A container ship, like the ones which come into our Port of Esperance, travel the equivalent of three-quarters of the way to the moon and back in one year during its regular travel across the oceans. That's approximately 288,300kms

10.01.2022 It takes a lot of power to run a port, so to have a new power solution from Horizon Power for our Port of Esperance is pretty incredible! It will include a new state-of-the-art gas power station and a centralised battery and renewables hub consisting of a solar farm and two wind turbines. 09.01.2022 Have you noticed something new on Princess Royal Drive near our Port of Albany? The 'Mossie Buoy' indicates the safe water arrival mark from a maritime perspective. It's the first in a series of local landmarks which will be coming to special spots near you! This buoy is also particularly special as right next to it is a memorial seat for one of our late team members.

03.01.2022 Meet Sarah! Sarah is a trainee marine pilot at our Port of Bunbury. Originally from Wales, Sarah quickly became a lover of the sea, working on ships since she graduated school including captaining the STS Leeuwin II, Australia's largest sail-training tall ship, for more than 11 years. Moving to Bunbury to take on the traineeship, Sarah works with the pilotage team to navigate ships safely into the port by identifying and managing any risks to prevent grounding or collision. ...She says the biggest challenge is getting used to the change in scale of the bigger style ships. Sarah who first joined our team in January, is working towards her unrestricted licence, and has had glowing reviews by her team so far!

03.01.2022 Have you seen the Tommy Windich Cultural Precinct behind the Port of Esperance? Tommy Windich was an Aboriginal tracker and explorer whose final resting place in Esperance was confirmed in 2017 after extensive work was completed by Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation and Applied Archaeology Australia following an anomaly which was located during roadworks in the area. Tommy was working with a construction party on the overland telegraph at Esperance Bay when he passed in 1976 from pneumonia.
