24.01.2022 Recent rain has provided perfect conditions for newly sown pastures and crops throughout the Western District. Unfortunately, these conditions also provide the perfect storm for slugs to multiply and cause significant damage. Whilst there are a number of preventative control measures that we can take prior to planting, a baiting program is the only real control we have. One monitoring method is to create surface refuges in the form of terracotta paving tiles, carpet squares... or similar. These can give an indication of slug activity and the relative number of slugs present. A 300mm by 300mm refuge represents approximately 0.1m2. Where the presence of slugs is found swift action must be taken to reduce the damage done. In many instances preventative baiting may be the best option, as a lot of the time significant damage is done before we realise there is a problem. Dont wait until the damage has already occurred to take action on slugs, these slimy little critters can cause catastrophic damage before you even realise. #southernsoilsfert #abalancedapproach #slugpasturedamage See more

Our clients multi-species summer crop is a mix of 17% Shihorie Millet, 25% Sorghum, 25% Buckwheat, 13% Tillage Radish, 4% Appin Turnip, 13% Pacer Foarge Rape and 4% Chico Chicory. 20.01.2022 A second crop Dan inspected whilst in the Macedon Ranges area was potatoes. Multi species green manure crop ahead of planting potatoes. The planting fertiliser included trace elements and a biological innoculant (Soil & Seed). 20.01.2022 Mark Coutts is the latest member of the Southern Soils agronomy team. A true passion for farming has been the driver for my involvement in the farming industry. I had an early introduction to farming and have been involved in it ever since. Starting my farming in the dairy industry in New Zealand I shifted to Australia in 1995. Operating my own 700 cow dairy farm in Northern Victoria until 2007. My farm consultancy career started in New Zealand and has continued in Austra...lia. After selling my dairy farm I have concentrated on consultancy with work carried out in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. I have been involved in pasture and crop nutrient and production trials in many different locations. Maximising farm profitability through farm performance. After recently making South West Victoria home I am delighted to join Southern Soils. My skill base has focused on pasture production from healthy soils and recognising the benefits in animal health, production and profit. 18.01.2022 A run down cropping paddock near Clear Lake, a change in thinking and instead of cropping again for minimal yields was oversown dry in the autumn with no chemical control. A mix of Grazing oats, annual ryegrass, clover and vetch was sown in to complement the volunteer beans, wimmera rye and other less desirable species. 06.01.2022 This week Dan has been up in Riverina country inspecting crops which we dont see in SW Vic - Cotton. The grower applied a prescription blend of BioAgPhos, sulphate of potash (SOP), Zinc, Boron, Cobalt and Molybdenum prior to bed formation and planting. Additional nitrogen and phosphorus were incorporated into the bed, prior to winter. It has also received top dressing of additional nitrogen and potassium.
