22.01.2022 DO YOU HAVE DIABETES? Did you know that it can cause serious foot problems? Thanks to our many years of experience in high risk podiatry, you are in good hands.... Foot health for diabetics is extremely important. It is recommended that diabetics visit a podiatrist at least once a year for a check up. Blood sugar levels over time can cause nerve damage and circulation problems. These problems can cause or contribute to foot problems. Left unnoticed or untreated, sores, ingrown toe nails and other complications can lead to infections. Prevention is key here at Southern Sports Podiatry & Sutherland Foot Clinic We don’t just check pulses, we use photoplethysmography (PPG) to measure blood pressure in your toes. The gold standard in vascular assessment of diabetics. This gives is a real value, that can be measured year after year to pick up any changes that may be occurring. We also use Neurothesiometry which also gives us a measurable value in volts. This tests the level of sensation and helps monitor any loss of sensation over time. We send a report to your GP within a week of performing our diabetic foot assessment. Any significant change and your GP is notified immediately. We also assess the dermatological condition of your feet and provide care where needed. Footwear is thoroughly assessed and recommendations given if necessary. Education is also a crucial and integral part of avoiding diabetic complications. We promote weight control, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Bulk Billing is available ask your GP for a referral and EPC to Sutherland Foot Clinic.

17.01.2022 Shin splints are a result of connective muscle tissue in the lower leg becoming inflamed and causing pain. Left untreated, shin splints can progress into tibial stress fractures. A common cause of shin splints is over pronation, that is, excessive rolling in of the foot. This is why people with flat feet are particularly prone to the development of shin splints. The over pronation causes the tibia bone to twist and the muscles in the lower leg to over stretch - this ca...n result in inflammation of the soft tissues that attach to the tibia. Shin splints can also be caused by tightness in the calf muscles, muscle weakness, increasing intensity and load too quickly, inappropriate footwear and running on inclines/uneven terrain. Symptoms include tenderness on the inside of the shin or the front of the shin. If you think you may have shin splints and would like one of our podiatrists to assess you phone 9521 7578 or book in online at www.southernsportspodiatry.com.au #podiatry #podiatrist #sutherland #sutherlandshire #heelpain #anklepain #shinpain #shinsplints #running #run #runner #marathon #triahtlon #plantarfasciitis #orthotics #sutherlandshiresmallbusiness #sutherlandshirebusiness

14.01.2022 Do you know anyone or suffer from Plantar Fasciitis yourself? Archies Thongs are great for people with Plantar Fasciitis! The arch support helps to support the foot in a more optimal position and helps to take load and stress off the heel and plantar fascia, allowing a more optimal healing environment to occur. Many podiatrists recommend the thongs to their patients as an indoor slipper to wear in and around the house when they not wearing their orthotics or shoes. P...lantar pain can be challenging to fix, but things like wearing the right footwear is an essential step in the right direction! Tag a mate who might find this info helpful! See more

10.01.2022 WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CHECKED YOUR SHOES? Like your car, your running shoes need to be checked on a regular basis. And just like your car tyres, after a certain amount of kilometres they need to be replaced. Most of the ‘spongy stuff’ shoes are made from are EVA. EVA has only so many compressions before it starts to loose its shape, structure and function. ... You can tell this is occuring on your shoe by looking at the wear patterns on the rubber sole. As the tread starts to become thinner, this is an indication that this particular part of the shoe is undergoing higher load. This can lead to injury as your foot does not have a flat plane to make contact with the ground. Roughly, running shoes should be replaced about every 800-100km of use. You should keep record how much running you do weekly to have an estimate of when to change the shoe. If you are suffering with any footwear issues fitting and/or pain book in for a biomechanics assessment. Within our 1hr initial consultation the podiatrist assess your shoes and gait to find the right shoe for you. We also have great relationships with local shoe stores that can help you purchase the right shoe. Phone 9521 7578 or book in online at www.southernsportspodiatry.com.au

Weight, activity type, footwear they’re used in and time can all influence the effectiveness of your devices so it is important to have them regularly reviewed! Ongoing use isn’t always necessary and we can provide you with assistance in transitioning out of your devices! .... . . Call 9521 7578 to book an orthotic review appointment.
