25.01.2022 This week we said (a temporary) goodbye to the amazing Kirsty Nisbet as she embarks on the next exciting phase of her life with husband Ian. It has been incredible to be there with her through the highs and lows, tears and joy, and now the final phase that is the miracle of new life. She will be greatly missed by kids and clients, dancers and singers, but most of all the SSPC staff. Good luck Kirsty and Ian.
25.01.2022 Not the best time for any of us right now, but we remain grateful our clinics remain open and safe to attend with strict hygiene and COVID policies in place. However we understand that for some, safety is at home, and the SSPC Physios can continue to assess, diagnose, educate, prescribe exercise, and refer via the SSPC Telehealth system. All physios at SSPC were pleasantly surprised at not only how easy, but how effective, Telehealth consultations were during the first COVI...D wave, and we now open up the channels again to anyone preferring to continue your health management, whilst staying at home. Just call either SSPC clinic to arrange your Telehealth appointment.
24.01.2022 Episode 14 of the Perform Prevent Recover Podcast is now live. The COVID pandemic has seen many people turn to running as their exercise saviour - including many who have never run before. Theres a whole new subgroup of runners out there trying to run that seemingly magical 5km distance. But do you know how to design the best program to make sure you optimise your fitness and time? Is running the same distance three or four times a week the best way to get fit? Will you get ...fitter and faster just by staying compliant to the same program over a long period of time? In this episode we go to "The Running Man" David Eadie and find out everything you need to know about designing the best running program for you. David is a veteran on the running circuit, starting out with four marathons by 12 years of age, progressing to Cross Country running for Glenhuntly Athletics Club, making Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games selection trials, completing a sub 10 hour Hawaii Ironman, then onto the brutal scene of ultradistance running. David has literally "been there, done that" with all aspects of running, and over recent years has combined his running with coaching and training people by designing individualised running programs through his online business therunningman.com.au Whether youre one of the new "5km Phenomenon COVID runners", a recreational runner, or a super keen runner, theres information in here that will help everyone improve their programs and their performances. And David has kindly passed on a basic outline of what he covers in depth in the podcast - go to our show notes for a link to see his suggestion for a training program for all you 5km runners out there, and theres options for 3 and 4 and 5 day a week runners. Enjoy the episode! https://performpreventrecover.podbean.com/ or paste this link into your favourite podcast player: https://feed.podbean.com/performpreventrecover/feed.xml

23.01.2022 Can you spare a coffee for our frontline physios? Dont the pictures below tell a story! There is a lot in the media about the role of our doctors and nurses during this pandemic, who are doing an extraordinary job.... but not much about the frontline physios. One of our own physio colleagues and great friend of us at SSPC, Donna Urquhart, has set about doing something small to raise awareness and thank the physios that are in intensive care treating patients with COVID a ...job that brings with it daily risks and stresses, to help our loved ones! Heres a message from Donna: HELP SUPPORT OUR FRONTLINE PHYSIOS I am feeling incredibly grateful to be running in the IAU Global Virtual Run tomorrow, organised to build camaraderie and raise spirits in the ultra-running community - they have over 400 athletes from 40+ different countries running. Its for 6 hours and yes 5 hours is going to be loops of the outside of my house. For me, its not about going fast or far (it will be lockdown loops around my house), its about raising AWARENESS and THANKING all our physiotherapists who are on the frontline caring for people with COVID-19 and risking so much each day. We are asking people to send in a photo of their walk or run over the weekend and/or to donate the cost of a coffee. The photos will be put together to form a Tribute Wall - ie a mosaic of photos with an overlay of the Healthcare Heroes mural (as seen here, painted in Black Rock). The funding will go to the Tribute walls and physio COVID-19 research. Please help by: (i) sending in a photo of your walk or run to form a Tribute Wall to give our physios and/or (2) donating the cost of a cup of coffee to show our support. I look forward to virtually walking or running with many of you, and showing we care! SEND YOUR PHOTO: https://forms.gle/dLBADQjbvvVnmcQJ6 or [email protected] DONATE A COFFEE HERE: https://www.gofundme.com/f/a-tribute-to-frontline-physiothe What a great cause for some great people. SSPC will be behind Donna, and well post a reminder tomorrow on our Facebook page, and wed love you all to comment over the weekend, whether you donate or not, just to let Donna know you are virtually walking with her!

Vitamin D is so important for our bone health, as well as our health in general! Take a read: https://www.sspc.com.au/are-you-vitamin-d-deficient/

In this episode Rob delves right into the triathlon world with Luke, covering topics such as: *His incredible triathlon history including competing at multiple Kona Ironman World Championships.... *The long list of injuries that may well have derailed many other careers. *When a camera man got in the way and cost Luke what looked like a potential Kona win. *Why one of Lukes best finishes at Kona is not his highest finish. *His training program and training advice, including modifications made during this COVID period. *The simple but effective mental strategy to help him through these torturous events. 15.01.2022 The latest episode of the Perform Prevent Recover podcast has been released and in Episode 13 we get another rare opportunity to go behind the AFL scenes and chat to a real superstar of the game: Essendons Matthew Lloyd, who is one of the greatest full forwards our game has ever seen. From kicking 100 goals in a season, to the Essendon captaincy, his coaches, the fallout from the Essendon drugs saga, Hawthorn rivalry, , the brutal bump on Brad Sewell in his final game, and a... whole lot more. Its a fascinating episode where we get to hear what drove one of the greatest full forwards the game has ever seen, but also look at the side that many dont see in great athletes - the mental health aspect of elite sport. This episode sees Matthew talk with incredible honesty in a "nothing is off the table" discussion about his career, the people he played with, and the highs and lows of a 270 game, 926 goal AFL career. 10.01.2022 We never stop at SSPC. Lock down Sunday was spent organising the next phase of reception overhaul. There may be some interruptions as this continues this week with the new Comms rack going in on Tuesday morning. We are confident the new space will help have us able to look after you all for the next 10 years
09.01.2022 Todays numbers arent what we were hoping for, but SSPC remains open for business with strict hygiene and safety protocols in place. Our staff feel they are oozing sanitiser from their pores, the masks are hot,and the temperature gun is getting a good workover. But its helping keeping us all safe! However we realise some people still arent comfortable attending and we totally understand that, so our Telehealth service is providing a great option for those that still need advice, education, injury diagnosis, exercise prescription, referrals: whatever! Other than massaging you, we can do it all on Telehealth. Just call either SSPC clinic to book and receive your simple appointment instructions!

04.01.2022 Great recognition for one of our physio colleagues Sue Mayes with her incredible work at The Australian Ballet. We mentioned Sues great work in Episode 6 of our Perform Prevent Recover podcast, outlining the importance of strength over stretch for all athletes, not just ballet dancers. This article again outlines the critical importance of a strength approach, not just for injury prevention and reduction, but also to enhance performance! This article is well worth a read, and if you havent listened to Episode 6 of the PPR podcast, we go into great depth on this topic. And dont forget we have our own fantastic dance/ballet physios here at SSPC! http://www.sspc.com.au/is-this-elite-sports-top-physio/

02.01.2022 Why the massive injury rate in AFL football at the moment? This question was posed to us by our friends at St Peters Football Club recently and we thought wed share the answer. Certainly the team physios, doctors and sports scientists were all well aware that this season was going to pose some real issues with not only soft tissue injuries, but also some of the more devastating injuries such as ACLs. Is it the condensed pre-season? The lack of contact during much of the al...lowed pre season? The length of games? The short turnaround between games? This is something that will no doubt be studied in depth once the full season statistics are available, but for now, as the season approaches the peak of the even more condensed game schedule, injuries do seem to be playing a big role and we are regularly seeing players seasons ending with soft tissue injury concerns. The AFL knew when COVID hit that the revised season was going to be a soft tissue injury minefield. Heres our thoughts on what is contributing: https://www.sspc.com.au/what-is-causing-the-injury-rate-in/
02.01.2022 Going for a walk today? Why not take a listen to episode 16 of the Perform Prevent Recover podcasts, where we get to chat to John Van Wisse - utra distance marathon swimmer and triathlete from our own bayside area of Melbourne. Over a 25 year career, John has won numerous international events, and set world records in gruelling ultra distance events, including the English Channel swim and the gruelling Arch to Arc triathlon from London to France. John takes us through the com...plexities of the Channel swims, talks about the time he almost died, and details the incredible difficulty of each leg of the Arch to Arc. John has amazing experience in many of the world's most famous triathlon and swimming events, and still has unfinished business with the Arch to Arc! He combines his current triathlon training with his swim coaching in Melbourne, overseeing hundreds of swimmers with their own fitness challenges, yet still manages to find the time to train to the level needed not only to complete these events, but to break world records. Listen in to one of the great ultra endurance athletes of our time!
