24.01.2022 Hi people. Well, what can we say about the weather yesterday but WOW! Again defying the forecasters Mother Nature served up excellent weather for us Winterballers. MPTS 23 D Rebels 4 Balls Deep 16 D NFI 4 Sweathogs 15 D Dads Army 3 Balls Deep 4 D MPTS 3 Premiership table is updated. With finals nearing, 7th spot is still up for grabs for a number of teams, some more mathematically possible than likely but the chance is still there. As questions are likely to start I will give some information here. The format will be the same as recent years: First round finals (15th September) 7 innings 12:00 start Diamond 1 2 v 7 Diamond 2 3 V 6 Diamond 3 4 V 5 Second round (15th September) 7 innings 3:00 start (or 30 minutes after previous games conclude) Diamond 1 1 V lowest ranked winner first round Diamond 2 highest ranked winner V second ranked winner To be eligible for finals players must have played in 11 games throughout the season (a game is credited for an opposition forfeit)

22.01.2022 Hi people. We have reached the end of the season so this will be the last official post for a while, so probably will be one of the longest. The weather was pretty kind yesterday, while not very warm it was dry throughout the afternoon and better than expected from the forecast. Those that came saw a good game of baseball played in great Winterball spirit, congratulations to both teams.... There can be only one winner of course and Brewers managed to defeat Spitballers 14-7 with the final score not a fair indication of how close it was for most of the game. Congratulations to Brewers, our premiers for 2019 Thank you to the small band of people that assisted set up for the night of celebrations. For those of you who missed the presentations, and those whose memory of the night may be a bit vague, here is a recap of proceedings: -apologies from Peter McGearey who was unable to attend due to another commitment. -welcome to the new team Pass the Plate, a great addition to the competition and have adopted the Winterball spirit well, -thank you to our umpires for the finals, particularly our grand final umpires, JB, Bails and the special return of Cheryle Miller, -thank you to all the team managers for their assistance throughout the year, -the obligatory thank you to the bar staff (it is a Southern Districts thing), -last but not least a big thank you to my fellow organiser "Janey" Presentations: Wooden Spoon - Rebels "Friendly Pitcher" (pitcher hit for the most home runs, sponsored by Dave Bailey) tied on 10 - Phil Graham (MPTS) Dave Gilbert (Rebels) Most Home Runs Hit (spnsored by Hugo von Alpen) tied on 7 Travis Cross (Brewers) Jason Slee (Brewers) Blake Schunke (Brewers) Mike Giordano (Dads Army) (a special thank you from Travis Cross to the people that put the cones out short) The Team Spirit Award - -equal third Brewers & S/NFI -second Pass the Plate -won by Dads Army Presentation of the Premiership cup and medallions to the Brewers (or should I say Average Joes) Final presentation, and in my opinion the most prestigious, our Winterball sportsperson of the year. Voted on throughout the year by the opposing team each game it reflects the person playing the game in the best spirit. A special mention to MPTS who had about 12 different players receive votes, making it difficult for one of their team to win, but does show they have many players with the right spirit. The winner this year, a longstanding player and a true gentleman of the game. He loves to play (and the high fastball when batting ) Congratulations to James "JB" Bowes from Blackhawks A big thank you from Jane and me for our generous gift baskets. While it is nice to be appreciated we are both happy to do what we do and the gifts are not expected. Thank you all. I hope you have enjoyed the season and we see you all back again next year. 19.01.2022 Hi people. Well the weather certainly didn't follow the script on Saturday but really could have been a lot worse than it was. The heaviest rain occurred shortly before games were due to begin and the odd showers during the games were fairly light. 16.01.2022 Hi people. Sorry, a little bit later than normal for the results and update but unfortunately work does sometimes get in the way. Saturday was fantastic, not only for the weather and the baseball but the Strike out Leukaemia was an amazing event.... Congratulations to Sue O'Brien and her band of helpers, the whole night was incredible. Sue, you truly are an astonishing lady and never cease to amaze me. Thank you to all that contributed to make the night a success, our all star players, our umpires Sean & "Dodo", the people shaving their heads, everyone who donated prizes and/or auction items, the people who purchased raffle tickets and/or won auctions, our barbecue staff, of course the bar staff, the list goes on, everyone who helped in anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you. There will be some pictures (my amateur pics) on here soon but there are already some on the Strike out Leukaemia page, have a look if you have not already. Yesterday we did get a taste of true Winterball with some light showers, more the late games than the early. Game results:... I don't think we have ever seen a five team tie for the top of the table, certainly not during my time, and if you think I am going to try and sort that out for head to head at this stage of the season, think again. How are the nominations for "Strike out Leukemia" going?

If you had told me we would have games without rain last Saturday I would have laughed, but Mother Nature did indeed do us a favour yet again. I had someone tell me I had done well organising the weather and as much as i would like to take some credit it really has been Mother Nature being benevolent. They have played each other three times with both teams having one win by 2 runs and a draw. The final positions have therefore been determined by score percentage. 09.01.2022 Hi people. With the summer season now finished for all but the lucky few still competing in finals it is time to start looking at Winterball for 2020. Managers for last season have been notified of a meeting at the clubrooms on Thursday 19th March at 7:30pm.... Anyone else wishing to enter a team should also attend or send a delegate. Anyone interested in playing that does not yet have a team can send a message via this page or visit the clubrooms when they are attended. The games will commence on Saturday 18th April (the Saturday after Easter) with the grand final/break up on Saturday 19th September. No games will be scheduled for the June long weekend.

08.01.2022 Hi people. As none of you live in a cave you are no doubt aware of the issues surrounding COVID-19, otherwise known as the corona virus. In line with directives issued by BaseballSA it has been decided that Winterball games will be suspended until after the June long weekend.... The safety of players and everyone involved with baseball is paramount. Games will not commence until it is deemed to pose little risk, not only to those directly involved in the game, but also to those they could possibly unwittingly transmit the virus. It is a difficult time and disappointing we are unable to enjoy playing our great game of baseball. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

08.01.2022 Hi people. Well the dust has settled on another season with glorious weather for the grand final and another great night full of saints and sinners. Congratulations to the 2018 premiers, Balls Deep. Clearly the dominant side throughout the finals series.... It was very pleasing on a personal level, and I think to many of the Winterballers, to finally present Cheryle formally with her SA Winterball Association life membership. Cheryle has been one of the most respected organisers for our Winterball competition and remains dear in the hearts of many. Other presentations made on the night: Wooden Spoon Rebels Amicable Pitcher (a new trophy donated by Dave Bailey for the pitcher conceding the most home runs) Hugo Von Alpen (Wanderers) Most Home Runs Hit (donated by Hugo) a tie Brian Blanton (MPTS) & Callum Gaspari (Sweathogs) Team Spirit Award (donated by Brian & Cheryle Miller) Dads Army Sportsperson of the Year Three way tie, Michael White (Rebels), Sarah Wright (Wanderers) & Matt Thompson (Dads Army) We must also thank the bar staff, not only for the service throughout the year but also their assistance with the break up was outstanding. Our ground staff have been brilliant, providing us with great playing facilities (when the weather did not threaten) and also lining the diamond for the grand final. The ground did look fantastic for the big game. Finally, and certainly by no means least, a big thank you from Jane and myself for your support and cooperation throughout the season, and especially your gifts. We were both blown away and very grateful. When I have caught up on sleep I will post some photos from the break up. There were some concerns with the weather early but the light showers in the afternoon did not have much impact on our games, very fortunate considering one competition in Adelaide was cancelled completely due to the amount of rain they received. Games results: Sweathogs 8 D Dads Army 3 Blackhawks 10 D Rebels 8... Brewers 11 D Spitballers 10 MPTS 17 D Wanderers 3 Pass the Plate 18 D NFI 5 Updated premiership table is attached. Before the queries start, yes there are three sides with the same win/loss ratio but as they have not all played each other they can not be separated by head to head. Ahh, I hear you say "what if there is a three way tie at the end of the season but on head to head team A is ahead of team B, team B is ahead of team C and team C is ahead of team A". I say, good question and in that very unlikely event we may have to decide final positions by the toss of a coin but we can give that some more thought.

04.01.2022 Hi people. What a cracker day for baseball on Saturday, a great start for the season. We had some firsts, the first game (and a win) for the new team in the comp "Pass the Plate", our first look at the new playing tops for NFI and a bunch of new players making their debuts. Game results: SPITBALLERS 14 D MPTS 5... BLACKHAWKS 10 D WANDERERS 8 SWEATHOGS 9 D BREWERS 0 (FORFEIT) DADS ARMY 12 D NFI 5 PASS THE PLATE 18 D REBELS 7 There were some minor hiccups on the day but we should have these addressed for next Saturday. The premiership table is attached, and while it is too early to give any real indication of the likely positions at the end of the season it does give the Sweaties a reason to smile and show the newbies how things work. For the new players, and the established players that have still not grasped the method of establishing positions on the premiership table I will give an explanation. Positions are first ranked on win/loss ratio, the higher the better of course. Teams that are tied are then placed according to their head to head results (ie their results against each other, if a team has defeated the other team they rank higher) If still tied (eg they have both defeated each once) the team scoring more runs in those games will rank higher. If still tied (ie they have both scored the same number of runs against each other) only then will percentage be the deciding factor. If still tied, there will be some unprintable exclamations. It has not happened so far and is so unlikely to happen we will only worry about it if it does happen, perhaps a toss of the coin with the loser forfeiting their sheep station. In the meantime, we can look forward to playing again on Saturday.

03.01.2022 Hi people. I hope everyone enjoyed father's day. We had some brilliant weather on Saturday, an early taste of spring. Finals must be just around the corner.... Again we have three teams with the same win/loss record, and each team has beaten one team so they have been separated by the run percentage. The make up of teams for the finals will not be known until the completion of games this Saturday. Seventh spot is still up for grabs with NFI or Blackhawks capable of pushing out Wanderers and any one of four teams able to finish in top spot. Very exciting, sort of makes the AFL look pretty ordinary in comparison. Watch this space!

02.01.2022 Hi people. Another day the weather forecast suggested a little bit of rain may fall but we were lucky enough to stay dry. There are some teams again level on wins and separated by head to head results, and with both teams sharing one win each it comes down to run difference in those games. For those of you that have not been informed, the final round of games scheduled for the 7th September will be replaced with the round originally scheduled for the 29th June but not played because of the weather. The change means that all teams play each other twice.

02.01.2022 Hi people. Hope you are all enjoying your long weekend. Those of you that have played Winterball in previous years would know about the charity fundraising event "Save the Boobies" in aid of breast cancer research. This year it will be slightly different and called "strike out leukemia". The main driving force behind the fundraisers in recent years is Sue O'Brien, team manager for MPTS and herself currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer (for a second time). Sue reque...sted we change the beneficiary of our charity event in support of her sister who is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia, also for a second time. There are some information sheets attached and you can see more on the FB page "Strike out Leukemia 2019". The format for the traditional friendly game is being changed. Instead of being an "all girls game" it will be an "all star game" with a player entry fee of (minimum) $100. This can be achieved with fundraising or if you are keen enough a donation of your own. It would be good to see at least two players from each team. If you would like to participate please speak with your team manager, they should have a nomination form which needs to be completed and returned by the 8th July The main fundraiser for the leukemia foundation is "shave for a cure". Anyone game to shave their head? And if so what price would you put on it? What would you be prepared to pay towards a teammate or club member "losing their locks"? Put your hands up people and/or throw in some suggestions. I know this a longer post than normal but the cause is worth it. Please get behind it give it the support it deserves. We would appreciate any items donated for raffle prizes or silent auction

02.01.2022 Hi people. Another day with some great weather for winter baseball, really we have been pretty lucky. For those that have not yet heard, Sue has advised the funds raised for Strike out Leukaemia wil be in excess of $15,000 and with at least one more function still to come it should go past $16,000. Absolutely outstanding. Well done by everyone involved.... Results of today's games: Brewers 12 D NFI 4 Sweathogs 6 D Blackhawks 1 Pass the Plate 8 D MPTS 3 Spitballers 9 D Rebels 5 Dads Army 10 D Wanderers 8 Updated premiership table is attached, and I will give some explanation to help everyone understand how the teams on equal points are separated. With Spitballers, Pass the Plate and Sweathogs all having the same number of wins, this is how it works: Spitballers have defeated Pass the Plate (twice) and Sweathogs, so ranked first. Pass the Plate have defeated Sweathogs so ranked second. The much easier one to sort out is MPTS over Brewers with their win for the only time they met so far this season. As you can see, there is no need to refer to the percentage for any of these.And if percentage is not an issue, there is no need to win by massive scores. Gotta luv the winterball spirit.

01.01.2022 Hi people. Well, here we are on the eve of the grand final, and perhaps more important to many the break up/presentation night. The weather forecast is fine and sunny so it should be a good day for playing, or watching a baseball game. Come down to the club to enjoy the game, and maybe a drink or two with friends. Game starts at 2pm.... Presentation night starts at 7:30pm with our DJ for the night playing the tunes until 1:00am. Remember your ticket for entry. The first game will be the first Saturday after Easter, 27th April, which is back to our traditional start. For players from last season, please advise your team manager of your playing intentions for the coming season.... For new or returning players, we can assist you find a team if necessary.
