25.01.2022 Some technical issues with koala map at moment. But if you click on main page it now clearly identifies the two most significant koala locations (through cluste...ring). [Most of the links aren't working properly at moment but you can still use the zoom on the map]. Two main hotpots are Morwell National Park (and surrounds) and Carrajung region and surrounds. 24.01.2022 PUBLIC ACCESS TO PUBLIC LAND As part of the $35 million Target One Million plan, the State Government has committed to guarantee access to fishing and camping on Crown land that has grazing licences and river frontage. Section 401A of the Land Act 1958 enables a person to enter and remain for recreational purposes on a water frontage which has been licensed under provisions of that Act, but prohibits a person from camping on the licensed land.... To enable camping on licensed water frontages, the Land Act 1958 is being amended to remove the prohibition on camping on licensed Crown land with water frontage. 23.01.2022 SGLN PROJECT UPDATE: Bunurong Coast Project The Bunurong Coast Project has sprung into spring with another week of fox trapping in the Venus Bay area. Our contractor has observed less foxes in the area, and this was reflected in the low number of foxes caught. 1080 fox baiting is due to recommence in October. Our contractors are looking at the optimal times to target rabbits. COVID Safe Work Practices continue to be followed by SGLN and our project contractors. SGLN has signe...d the Year 3 contract with West Gippsland Catchment Authority to deliver the final year of this funded project. As required by this contract, SGLN is now preparing a quarterly progress report for the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority. SGLN has been liaising with TAFE Gippsland to provide training for participating landholders to obtain their Agricultural Chemical Users Permit (ACUP) with a possible 1080 accreditation. This training is likely to be available in early 2021. The Enhancing Biodiversity at the Bunurong Coastal Landscape project is funded by the Victorian Government's Biodiversity Response Planning Program.

15.01.2022 Shared from Victorian Rabbit Action Network (VRAN) NAIDOC Week will be celebrated this week across Australia. It celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC stands for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’, which emerged from Aboriginal groups in the 1920s that worked to raise awareness of the status and treatment of Aboriginal people.... This year’s NAIDOC theme Always Was, Always Will Be invites you to embrace the history of this nation, recognising that First Nations people have cared for the country for over 65,000 years with the world’s oldest continuing cultures, responsible for the earliest maps, oral stories and paintings. This event might provide an opportunity to for your community group or workplace to think about how you could work with the Traditional Owners in your area on your next rabbit management project. Last year we visited the far north-west corner of Victoria, as part of an ongoing program to build knowledge about managing rabbits in culturally sensitive landscapes. We held a workshop that aimed to build partnerships and raise awareness of Aboriginal heritage. The north west of Victoria is a truly unique part of Australia, in terms of the number of globally significant ancient Aboriginal burial sites, however sites have been significantly damaged by rabbits. Parks Victoria and the First People of Millewa Mallee are working tirelessly to protect the most highly culturally sensitive areas. Watch this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dY4qqz7YpZw&feature=emb_logo) to find out more about the workshop and keep an eye out for the case study coming soon.

02.01.2022 Introducing two new sub-committees to the SGLN Board The Board is proud to announce the establishment of two new sub-committees to help support our work in the ...coming years. Subcommittees are typically made up of Board members but the opportunity exists for SGLN and Landcare Group members with the appropriate skillset to join. Indigenous Engagement Committee The role of this sub-committee is to look for ways to engage the local community, strengthen relationships and promote advocacy with the Gunaikurnai and Bunurong people. Tasks might include advertising events to our wider Landcare network, navigating cultural competency on the Board, offering best practice for groups to follow, sharing resources from local groups like the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC), pointing interested Landcarers in the right direction for more information, opening and maintaining a dialogue with cultural representatives, identifying relevant funding opportunities, and sharing relevant content throughout our network (including social channels). Technology Committee The role of this sub-committee is to help manage the technical requirements of SGLN, which includes supporting the Board and groups to adopt and manage new technology. The committee will be responsible for identifying tech opportunities, conducting research, organising support sessions and making recommendations about best practice and products for approval by the Board. If you are interested in joining either sub committee please email: [email protected] (Indigenous Engagement Committee) [email protected] (Technology Committee)

01.01.2022 NEWS FROM HALLSTON REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE GROUP(HRAG) The Hallston Regenerative Agriculture Group (HRAG) is a new group which is currently auspiced through SGLN. Even though we only started in May, we have an active Facebook following, and held our first event on Sunday, September 27, on two local farms. We conducted two visual soil assessments on properties which are participating in SGLN's Enhancing Soil Biology project. Despite the short notice and it being our first eve...nt, we had six people attend. We followed the instructions as outlined in the Visual Soil Assessment Field Guide book by Graham Shepherd. We assessed the soil porosity, colour, smell and counted earthworms. Both farms had conducted VSAs last year and comparing the results was very interesting. Both farms noticed a significant improvement in the soil, including a 1200% increase in earthworms. The root depth was also surprising, with an increase of up to 200mm from a year ago. It is great to see such an improvement in the soil in only 12 months and it shows that a regenerative approach of no disturbance, no chemicals or sprays and strategic grazing does wonders. Our Acting President, Gerhard Grasser, led the learning on the day and participants remarked about how much they took away with them about soil health. One of the participants is embarking on a project to remove 50 year old pine trees and rejuvenate the soil on his property so the learning opportunity arrived just in time. The HRAG looks forward to running more hands on workshops to support a regenerative approach in the local area and we very much welcome any landcare lovers to come along to our next event. You can find out about our events on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/853673141785083/
