22.01.2022 With the cooler winter weather setting in, its important to remember that our pets are feeling the chill too! Cold weather can be especially hard on senior cats and dogs as the drop in temperature can aggravate joints stiff with arthritis. Here are few tips to help keep your furry friend warm this winter:... Keep up a healthy exercise regime to encourage good circulation and develop muscle tone. Extra weight on your pet will only worsen joint pain. Make sure your pet has a warm, comfortable rest area away from drafts and elevated off cold, hard surfaces. You can place a pet heating pad in their bed to create a cosy and safe sleeping environment. A good pet-coat or jumper will help keep your pet warm. Just make sure it doesnt restrict their movement. Extra cuddles! Snuggle up with your pet and stay warm together. Theres no better way to keep the winter blues at bay!

18.01.2022 Our feline friends can live for an impressive 20 years! With that in mind, its important to keep an eye on their health and make sure theyre living their best life every day. Here are some tips for taking care of your senior cat. With a good diet, regular exercise and some care and attention, your kitty will be purring for years to come! Dietary - older cats are more sensitive to nutrient imbalances. Feed a balanced diet that avoids excessive sodium, phosphorus, calc...ium and magnesium. Exercise - encourage playtime with your cat to help maintain muscle tone, enhance circulation and prevent obesity. Dental care - good dental care and yearly cleans with your vet can help prevent tooth loss, tartar, and periodontal disease. Monitor for changes - check your cat regularly for any new lumps and bumps and monitor their behaviour closely. Cats are good at hiding their feelings so it can be hard to tell when somethings wrong. Regular check ups - get regular check ups with your vet to help maintain good health and for early detection of illnesses such as kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disease and arthritis. See more

16.01.2022 We always recommend bringing your pet to one of our clinics for an annual dental checkup with your vet. However, there are plenty of things you can do at home to keep on top of your pets oral health year-round! Brush their teeth - the best way to remove plaque and tartar build up at home. Buy an appropriate pet toothbrush and toothpaste, start with a gentle gum rub and work your way up to a vigorous brush. Feed dry food - dry food can help prevent plaque and tartar b...uildup by scraping against the teeth as your pet eats. If your pet needs some extra help we recommend Hills Prescription Diet t/d Dental Care. Dental chews - treat your pet to some VOHC approved dental chews designed to help remove plaque from teeth. Mouth wash - try adding a few drops of a VOHC approved water additive to your pets bowl to help reduce plaque and inflammation. Regular dental checks - We recommend having your pets dental health checked annually by your vet. This allows us to detect problems early. Whenever there is an excessive build-up of tartar or dental calculus on the teeth we perform a full clean and scale under general anaesthetic. Problem teeth can also be removed during the procedure.

15.01.2022 Seven in ten cats over the age of three suffer from dental disease. If oral health is a problem for your feline friend, we recommend Hills Prescription Diet: Dental Care. Prescription Diet t/d is specially formulated to support your cats dental health. In fact, t/d is clinically proven to reduce plaque, stain, & tartar buildup. 15.01.2022 Did you know that more than 80% of cats and dogs over the age of four suffer from dental disease? While most owners think bad breath is normal for their pet, thats not actually the case! Dental disease can cause a lot of discomfort, and may ultimately lead to more serious issues for your fluffy friend. Dental disease affects more than 80% of dogs and cats over age four. Just like humans, dogs and cats accumulate bacteria, debris and plaque from the food they eat ...on the outside of their teeth. When left uncleaned, this coating of germs hardens to form tartar which can irritate the gums and eventually lead to gingivitis and tooth loss. The bacteria can even enter the bloodstream, causing damage to kidneys and other vital organs. Look out for bad breath, discolouration of teeth, inflammation of the gums, difficulty eating and excessive drooling. By providing your pet with regular dental care (both at home and from your vet) dental disease is largely preventable.
14.01.2022 Just like us, our pets are surrounded by environmental irritants each and every day. Fleas, pollen and even the dust in our homes can cause a skin condition in some dogs that may lead to scratching, sometimes excessively. This is unpleasant for your pet and can also be difficult for everyone else in the family. The good news is most dogs with these skin conditions can benefit simply from the right food. We recommend Hills Prescription Diet: Derm Defense to strengthen your do...gs skin barrier and drive healthy skin from within. Helps strengthen skin barrier Drives healthy skin from within Formulated to help soothe and nourish skin & coat Helps skin to recover naturally Holistic long-term solution supporting a healthy immune system Speak to one of our vets to learn more about how the right diet can benefit your dog if they have sensitive skin.
14.01.2022 We love our dogs, even if they start to get a little rough around the edges as they age. Here are some tips for taking care of your senior dog. With a good diet, regular exercise and some care and attention, your faithful friend will be around for years to come! Dietary - muscle mass and organ function will decrease as your dog ages. Consider a high protein, lower carb diet.... Exercise - regular moderate exercise can help maintain muscle mass and keep joints mobile. Dental care - special dental diets, teeth brushing and dental treats are great ways to help prevent dental disease, which is common in seniors. Monitor for changes - detect problems early by keeping an eye out for any lumps and bumps and monitoring your dog for any changes in behaviour. Regular check ups - senior dogs are more susceptible to a number of illnesses and diseases. We recommend frequent check ups with your vet to detect any issues early on and ensure your senior dog can live as long and happy as possible.

06.01.2022 Its great that were now able to freely travel around WA, but with this comes risks to your travel companions. Please be aware that poison baits are often ...used for feral pest control on rural properties and national reserves throughout the state. Remember the following advice to keep your pets safe. 1080 baiting is an essential pest management tool that is used by farmers and pastoralists to protect both their livestock and agricultural produce. Its also used in reserves by Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia to protect our unique biodiversity and native fauna from foxes and other pests such as rabbits, feral cats and dogs. These baits are poisonous to humans and will kill domestic cats and dogs. Baiting can occur all year round with seasonal peaks in the spring months. However, there is no given time period that you should assume your pet is safe. To keep your pets safe its best to leave them at home with a carer or in a boarding kennel. If you take your pet with you: avoid areas such as watercourses, tracks, fence lines, rock piles and posts, which are suitable places for baiting keep dogs on a lead whenever possible, and always supervise your dog when off the lead use a muzzle, this is the best means for preventing your dog from ingesting the toxin check with landholders, to see if baits are being used on their property if youre in a regional area unfamiliar to you, make sure you have the contact details of a local vet, should you need to contact them in an emergency. Warning signs are placed where applicable on pastoral, DBCA, unallocated Crown Land and main access roads in agricultural areas. However, do not rely upon the presence of warning signs. Signage may not be in the immediate vicinity and can be weather damaged, removed or destroyed. Please check with the relevant landowner prior to entering their lands. If you think your pet has ingested 1080, always contact a vet immediately. Guidance on the safe use and management of 1080 baiting is available for landholders on our website. https://bit.ly/31Glitu PestSmart
06.01.2022 As your pet gets older its important to have regular checkups to help maintain good health and detect any issues early on. Since older dogs and cats are more susceptible to preventable illnesses like heart, kidney and dental disease, we recommend seeing your vet twice every year once your pet reaches 7 years of age. Call us to book an appointment today

03.01.2022 We understand how important it is for our pets to have healthy skin and fur, so this month well be focusing on skin conditions, their symptoms, causes and treatments. The condition of your pets skin and fur can be a good measure of their overall health, and may even indicate underlying illnesses that are causing ongoing discomfort. If you notice any signs of skin irritation in your pet, always book a consultation with one of our friendly vets. They will able to help determi...ne the cause of your pets condition and can recommend the most suitable treatment and diet. Lets get started with the symptoms and causes of skin irritation in pets: Symptoms to look out for: Chewing/licking Discolouration Scratching/rubbing Sores/discharge Dry, flaky skin Hair loss Matted hair Bumps/rashes Red skin/ears Scooting Head shaking Odour Common causes of skin irritation: Environmental Allergies - Pollen, household dust, mould and plants can cause an allergic reaction in pets. Hormonal Imbalances - If your pets endocrine system generates a level of hormones thats too high or low a range of skin problems can occur. Skin Infections - Cuts and scrapes, as well as floppy ears and skin folds that are difficult to clean, can put your pet at risk for bacterial infections. Food Intolerances - Pets can have an allergic reaction to certain food ingredients. This may occur the first time your pet is exposed to an ingredient or could develop over time. Parasites - Fleas, lice and mites can all cause skin irritation. Not only do parasites carry disease, they can have an unhealthy effect on your pets skin, and can eventually cause tissue damage.

02.01.2022 PRESS RELEASE Red Dog Vet Pip My first red kelpie... Rick Fenny, a veterinary surgeon, is a man of the road long trips taking him to his vet practices throughout the Pilbara. He is recognised as the keeper of the real version of the legendary Red Dog story an animal medicine man equally excited about dealing with a sick puppy in one of his far flung treatment rooms as attending to the veterinary needs of a vast cattle station. Red Dog Vet Pip, is the first of four books about the red dogs that punctuated four eras of Rick’s life. He takes the reader into his world as a young boy growing up in the post war years; firstly, on a small farm and orchard in the Hills area of Perth, and later in the coastal town of Albany. Those years formed his love of the bush, the ocean, everything to do with freedom. It is in Albany that, as a ten year old, Pip entered his life and Rick ofttimes refers to him as my little brother. He says, ‘Pip and I were closely bonded and did everything together. He set me on my pathway, inevitably to become a vet, teaching me about animal and human behaviour, love loss, responsibility, caring and practical lessons in pet ownership.’ The reader is invited to share the unique experience of a boy progressing through the formative and manhood years with his special canine friend. It takes us firstly into an era when life was simple and carefree for a young child on a small holding in the Perth Hills, caring for the farm animals and helping with the orchard. With his family’s move to Albany, we journey into an idyllic life for a boy growing up in a coastal town. There are adventures around every corner for Rick, with Pip always by his side, and getting in on the action. Purchase through PayPal. $39.95 soft cover https://py.pl/PDPA $44.95 hard cover https://py.pl/1PZUxK (plus $5.00 handling and postage) The book is also available at all Pets and Vets Group practices, Ocean Park Aquarium in Shark Bay and various bookstores.
