18.01.2022 https://youtu.be/KSGU6--q06w Wild Joe Reid and his great-uncle, South Perth Senior Citizens member James Harwood, harmonica maestro. The living is easy and the future is as bright as the smile on our nonagenerian's face :) Sing along if you wish:... "One of these mornings you're gonna rise up singing. Yes, you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky. But 'til that morning, there's nothing can harm you. Yes, the South Perth Senior Citizen's Centre* is standing by." *Liberty of light lyrical amendment was taken* Find Joe on Instagram: @wildjoereid

17.01.2022 The Council on the Ageing (COTA) helps over-50s, has released a 28-page e-book called Stay Socially Connected: 20 Things to Keep You and Your Loved Ones Happy while Self-Isolating and Beyond. Have a read https://www.medialaunch.com.au/pdf/COTA-Connect.pdf

15.01.2022 It's so important for a 'Mentally Healthy Mind' to Act Belong-Commit particually if you are a Senior. ACT - Being active keeps you alert, energised and in touch with others: do some gardening... dance call a friend and chat to them on the phone read books or listen to music have a chat down at the shops play cards or do a puzzle go for a bush walk or ride a bike around your local park BELONG - Connecting with others helps you to feel a sense of belonging in the community: spend more time with family and friends join an acting or singing group explore your local community garden get to know your neighbours play chess, bingo or mahjong with your friends sign up to a local sport or recreation club COMMIT - Committing to something that is meaningful to you provides a sense of meaning and purpose in life which increases life satisfaction and resilience. learn a new instrument, language or skill volunteer for a cause that has always interested you adopt or foster an animal work on a home improvement project make a financial plan for retirement get involved in a community service group such as Rotary or Probus

15.01.2022 https://youtu.be/VgihPQH5RC8 The great-nephew of South Perth Senior Citizens member James Harwood treated us to this amazing performance last night. Turn the volume up and dance along this morning ... the Board absolutely insists you chime in with the chorus: "Sing us a song, you're the piano man... Sing us a song tonight Well, we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us feelin' alright" The Board would again like to thank a few people in no particular order: Steve Irons for this amazing piano, the SPSCC Centre Supervisor Margaret Evans for all her hard work behind the scenes to organise her assistant Kate Della-Vedova to film this for members last night, and certainly thanks to ALL OF OUR MEMBERS who have shared their feedback on our recent newsletter and brighten our days. This morning we're all in the mood for a melody of GRATITUDE.

11.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcG4i6ZhEZo&feature=youtu.be The Board was delighted to have a brand new piano for our member's enjoyment delivered to the Centre this month. Endless thanks to Swan Federal Member Steve Irons for inviting the South Perth Senior Citizens Centre to apply for funding for this beauty, its delivery has already been put to good use. On behalf of the Board, we were most grateful to South Perth Councillor Carl Celedin for his uplifting solo yesterday. A short snippet below! Thanks to our local volunteers from Skin Review who cleaned and sanitised the piano with extra loving care so it can be enjoyed for many years to come.

11.01.2022 Exciting news on the way as we partner with local businesses big and small so we can best serve our members but MOST IMPORTANTLY, FUN - who wants to play Self-Care-Bingo with us? Celebrate the little wins today, and have fun marking off your achievements. However small, any journey begins with a single step. Onwards and upwards (or sideways and downwards, this is Bingo of course!) to our members and friends <3

11.01.2022 This is obviously going to be very different kind of ANZAC Day. Saturday will be our first ANZAC Day since WWII without a traditional Dawn Service. While coming... together in person this year just isnt possible, we hope that you will still honour those who have fallen, those who have served, and those who continue to serve our nation. Were asking Western Australians to stand at the end of their driveways, or on their balconies at 6am on Saturday morning to pay their respects. Tune into the radio and observe The Ode, The Last Post and the Minute Silence. While we cant gather in the same place, we can still commemorate their service, together as a state. Lest We Forget.

11.01.2022 A very Happy 100th birthday to the very inspirational Bill Grayden, our very best wishes the Board, Management and Members at South Perth Senior Citzens.

08.01.2022 Dear members and volunteers, With the glorious sunshine in South Perth today, opportunities abound to celebrate a 27 degree day, for just a few minutes in the comfort of your own backyard If you're fortunate to have a clothes-line, perhaps pop your linens in the wash today with a drop of eucalyptus oil, then get the sun to work its health-promoting, natural sanitising magic on your sheets and pillow cases. We love the feeling of fresh bedding as we snuggle in on cooler nig...hts. Health tip: numerous studies report that short amounts of sun exposure may improve Vitamin D levels, protect against heart disease, boost the immune system and enhance longevity and vitality. Sleep tip: A little drop of lavender oil on your pillow-slip before you lay down your head has a calmative effect and can help to improve the quality of your sleep. To our much-loved community: be well, rest well, celebrate the little things and as always: please reach out to us here or on [email protected] if we can help you in any way. We look forward to seeing your smiling faces again soon.

02.01.2022 Today is elder abuse awareness day, sadly research suggests, it is likely that between two per cent and 14 per cent of older Australians experience elder abuse . COVID-19 and self-isolation may have increased the risk factors including financial stress within families and unchecked family conflict in confined living circumstances. Some of the warning signs of elder abuse to look out for include: - Unnecessary levels of isolation that go beyond government restrictions... - Changes in the older persons behaviour, with the person disengaging from family members, health, aged care and other services, or making threats of self-harm or expressions of hopelessness - The older person being prevented access to potential supports and modes of communication (such as phone or internet) - Sums of money to pay for unspecified items are being requested or spent For support contact WA - Elder Abuse Helpline - 1300 724 679
