16.01.2022 Vanuatu Disaster Appeal After weeks of discussions, Bridging Health President, Ricco Yasso is launching our Vanuatu Disaster Relief Appeal. In recent... weeks, category 5 TC Harold, ripped through the northern provinces of Vanuatu, leaving behind a trail of devastation. People have been left homeless, food crops have been destroyed, livestock has died, floods have destroyed land and roads, water sources have been contaminated and the beautiful people in these situations have been left with the uncertainty of what is ahead. Having seen the devastation of category 5 Cyclone Pam on the southern provinces, especially Tanna, our hearts and prayers are with all of you as you begin the long journey of recovery. Bridging Health is an Australian charity with DGR status, giving you (and your organisations and entities) the benefit of tax deductibility for all donations over $2. We hope this allows you to give generously to these projects. PROJECTS: The campaign will support four projects (project details and reference codes further down message): The purchase of supplies and equipment for Medical Santo, financial support for the Pentecost Disaster Team, immediate relief & recovery of projects being directed by Healing Touch Ministries on Araki/Tangoa, and immediate relief project for Ambrym being overseen by Bridging Health National Representative for Vanuatu. Project #1: Medical Santo is based in the town of Luganville on the island of Espiritu Santo, the second largest town in Vanuatu. It provides health services, support and primary health care to the region. Medical Santo does not receive government funding and is in need of medical supplies and equipment. It serves the people of Santo and nearby islands. REFERENCE CODE ON DONATION> MedicSanto Project #2: Pentecost Disaster Team, headed up by Reginald Tari Gerian. Pentecost was decimated by the cyclone, and has a number of communities where almost every house and building is damaged or destroyed. The recovery and reconstruction will be extensive. REFERENCE CODE ON DONATION> PentDT Project #3: Village projects in Araki & Tangoa. Both these Island were severely affected by the cyclone, destroying homes, crops and contaminating water sources. Pastor Joshua from Healing Touch Ministries is heading this project up, and will oversee the recovery in the partnering villages. REFERENCE CODE ON DONATION> HTM AraTang Project #4: Bridging Health’s Project on Ambrym is being overseen by Enneth & Emori. Some villages of Ambrym were completely or severely destroyed, succumbing to flood damage, as well as the loss of housing, crops, and contamination of water sources. REFERENCE CODE ON DONATION> BHAmb For those who know Bridging Health, and have worked with us, know our love for the people of Vanuatu, and know that 100% of donations received will be passed onto each specified project each week, ensuring quick movement of funds to enable rapid response and relief. Bridging Health does not have administrative fees, charges or wages. ALL of the money donated goes directly to the projects you nominate. Each donor needs to enter the code for the area they want to support. If no project code is specified, then the donation will be divided evenly between all four projects. This information will be circulated through Facebook, Instagram, emails and text messages to forward to family and friends that may wish to help the families of Vanuatu during this disaster recovery. Please help these families be gifted the essential basics of shelter, food and water. Any amount will benefit these projects, but we urge everyone to be as generous as you are able to at this time. Thank you on behalf of NiVanuatu. Anyone requiring a tax receipt will have to email us with their personal details and copy of receipt of deposit. 14.01.2022 On this day 25th August 1994 the Federal Government officially recognised our Australian South Sea Islander community as a distinct and unique cultural minority in Australia after much lobbying and hard work by our community and with the help of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s 1992 report - The Call for Recognition: A Report on the Situation of Australian South Sea Islanders, called on the Commonwealth Government to recognise our community as a unique minority group which is severely disadvantaged by racial discrimination. Our design is to acknowledge this formal recognition and to encourage conversation about our community with those who may see it and ask questions about who we are. https://bit.ly/3hcH4ue

10.01.2022 Providing a marketplace for others to sell their handcrafted or designed products is one of our major goals and we are collaborating with Leweton Cultural Experience from Santo, Vanuatu to develop our Vanuatu Collection. Leweton families rely heavily on tourism to provide for their families but hopefully as this collection grows it will help to give them an extra income source as profits from this collection go directly to Leweton. 06.01.2022 Arrived in Brisbane today to attend Parliament House tomorrow to view Parliament in session at 9am and then attend a special morning tea being held in recognition of The 20th anniversary of Australian South Sea Islander Recognition in Queensland. As I sit in my motel room overlooking the city I am thinking of all those who came before me. The tens of thousands of Islanders taken from their homelands and brought here. Also, those like my grannies who stayed after the white Aus...tralia policy was brought in when others were deported. Those who fought for recognition by our federal government which was achieved in 1994. Those who were involved in the Queensland Government’s recognition of our existence in 2000 and helped to develop policies to address the significant issues faced by our people here. 20 years on since then and sadly no major outcomes of those policies have been achieved. We as a community need to stand united together and build on the foundation built by those who came before us. Our issues remain so it is time to work together to achieve outcomes which will address those issues. It is time... Jacintha Batalibasi See more
