25.01.2022 With rain and cooler temps ahead for the next few days, it's the perfect time to get some slow release fertiliser down if you haven't done it already, and to get out in the early mornings to catch the snails and slugs as they munch on the fleshier leafed plants. These I caught on tulip leaves, Kniphofia (red hot poker) and native saltbush. And get ready to mulch after the rain to trap that water in the ground. With these relatively easy jobs done, it'll be a good weekend to spend dry indoors, watching your favourite footy grand final .

20.01.2022 Spectacular when in flower, round about now Veronica perfoliata aka Diggers Speedwell is finishing flowering and starting to look a little shabby. Cut it back hard to about an inch from the base. I use a chainsaw for the larger specimens. Fertilise, water and it'll bounce back again with new growth.

15.01.2022 One West Australian that is very happy living in Canberra is Melaleuca lateritia aka Robin Redbreast. Growing to around 2m high and 1.5m wide it makes a good screening plant, with very impressive orange-red bottlebrush flowers emerging in late Spring and Summer.

14.01.2022 This one's a bit of an ugly duckling. Insignificant leaves and really quiet gangly in shape and appearance. Until it flowers - what a colour !! Melaleuca fulgens Apricot. I find it best grown amongst other plants and tip pruning can help thicken it up a bit.

11.01.2022 Merry Christmas everyone ! I hope you manage to spend some quality time with those closest to you but still get the chance to wander and ponder in the garden

09.01.2022 Hi Everyone. A recent arm injury has caused me to bring forward the transition of the business from garden maintenance and landscaping to native plant nursery. I apologise to any of my regular customers who have been inconvenienced by the halt of maintenance services. With a bumper Spring and a mild Summer so far, I'm the first to admit the timing couldn't have been worse. I do hope in time to be able to resume designing and creating native gardens, but ultimately it will be ...my arm's recovery that will determine if and when that happens. I have registered the new business name Southside Natives to better reflect the nature of the business now, but the ABN remains the same. So focusing on what I can do, rather than what I can't, I'm proud to offer well over 100 different species of Australian native plants for sale, the large majority of which are suitable for Canberra's cold winters and hot summers. Some are hardy 'front-liners' while others can thrive with a bit of shelter. Many, including kangaroo paws, Lechenaultia, Scaevola, Trigger plants and smaller tea trees make excellent pot plants. The plants are competitively priced, as I operate from home so avoid a lot of the overheads faced by others. And while I can't always beat the price offered by the large retail outlets, I'll put my plants up against them for survivability any day. Plant species selection and acclimatisation are a critical start to successful gardens in our climate zone, and that's where I feel I offer sound value to the customer. I'm aiming to open on a regular basis to the public from Spring this year, once (hopefully) Covid is under control. In the meantime though, I'm happy to arrange individual appointments for viewing and sales. If you'd like to make an appointment it's best to text me as it's the only form of communication that I monitor on a daily basis. Wishing you all a very safe and floriferous 2021
