22.01.2022 Both our orchestras are preparing to record their Term 3 repertoire next week as a video concert! We’re getting excited to hear them The way all the students have applied themselves to get back into the swing of playing together, with the new distancing measures in place, has been a great credit to every member. Congratulations on your hard work!

21.01.2022 Members of the Southside Youth Orchestra recorded their parts for Big Ben Boogie by Brisbane composer Loreta Fin as part of the SSYO@Home project, and sent them in for us to put together. Players worked on their ensemble skills by playing with the orchestral backing track and the metronome recording track, and did an admirable job! Congratulations to everyone involved, and stay tuned to hear the second virtual orchestra project this weekend!

15.01.2022 In Term 2, when SSYO could not meet due to COVID-19, we held activities for our members as part of the SSYO@Home program. For the composition challenge, SSYO1 concertmaster Chloe composed a piece called War, which SSYO1 are performing this term. Chloe also entered War in the ASME QLD Young Composers' Competition, and won the Primary division. Congratulations Chloe, and thank you to Mr Holloway for providing feedback on the compositions! Check out Q&A with Chloe below ...Q: What was your inspiration for composing War? A: I wrote ‘War’ during the COVID-19 lockdown, when South Side Youth Orchestra (the orchestra I play in) hosted a Composition Challenge. The challenge was to write an orchestral piece for the orchestra to play. I decided to name my piece ‘War’, because of the COVID-19 situation. I think of the COVID-19 pandemic as an ‘invisible war’, because we cannot see the coronavirus. Q: What did you learn throughout the composition and revision process? A: I learnt many things throughout making the composition, such as cadence rules and how different bowings and rhythms wouldn't work with each other. Q: What do you find interesting when hearing the orchestra rehearsing your piece? A: I was pretty surprised that almost all of the SSYO1 members were fluently playing the parts, especially the 3rd Violins, because they have got the hardest rhythm. I prefer when the orchestra plays my piece than when the computer plays my piece. It just sounds more musical.

They sound just like a live orchestra - congratulations to everyone involved! We were so glad to share projects for the students to engage with their orchestral learning while we were unable to have rehearsals due to COVID-19. When we cannot play together in person, we can still play together from a distance!
