25.01.2022 Knee Effusion: Fluid or Water on the Knee What is Effusion of the Knee? To put it simply, effusion of the knee is the escape of fluid into the tissue. This occurs when excess fluid accumulates in or around the knee joint. A small amount of fluid naturally exists in normal joints, but when a joint is affected by arthritis, for example, abnormal amounts of fluid can build up causing the knee to become swollen around the top, outside and below your knee Water on the Knee... vs. Bursitis: Whats the difference? Its unclear what the difference between water on the knee, or effusion, and knee bursitis is, but weve uncovered why: theyre both the same thing. There is no difference between water on the knee and knee bursitis. Knee bursitis is specifically explained as the inflammation of a small fluid-filled sac situated near your knee joint and around the kneecap. A bursa is the small sac that retains the fluid. The fluid that fills the bursa is called synovial fluid. Other names for water on the knee: Effusion Knee Bursitis Prepatellar Bursitis Swelling of the knee Water on the Knee vs. Swelling of the Knee: What is the difference? There are two different types of swelling: edema and effusion. Edema is swelling that occurs primarily in the soft tissues of the body. Effusion is swelling or fluid in the joint space. So really, there is no difference between water on the knee and swelling of the knee. Effusion is just a specific type of swelling. Symptoms of Effusion: Swelling and redness of the skin Joint stiffness Difficulty straightening leg Pain and tenderness Knee is warm/hot to the touch Fluid build up Knee is large and puffy What causes fluid on the knee? The two main causes of effusion of the knee: 1Arthritis Arthritis is inflammation of one or more of your joints. There are actually over one hundred different forms of arthritis. The symptoms typically include pain, swelling, and stiffness. 2Injury to ligament An injury to your ligament can occur in many different ways. Ligaments in your knees include the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), the lateral collateral ligament (LCL), and the medial collateral ligament (MCL). This can occur while on a run or other strenuous activities. The symptoms typically include pain, a loud pop, swelling, looseness in the joint, and inability to bear weight without pain. After any injury, swelling occurs because the bodys natural reaction is to surround the knee with a protective fluid. This is when effusion of the knee occurs. #kneeeffusion #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

24.01.2022 Lower back discomfort? The QL muscle muscle goes from the bottom of our ribs to the top of our hips. If it gets tight it can compress the spine and add to your pain. Stretching out this muscle can help relieve the pressure it may be adding on the lower back.... This can be done seated or standing. Hold for 30sec-2min until you feel some relief. #quadratuslumborum #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

21.01.2022 Toe Strength and Control Work on your strength and control in your toes and feet by putting them to use! If you see something on the ground try to grasp it with your toes; lift your foot off the ground and bring it up to your hand rather than bending down to pick it up. As you get more comfortable with this, you can make it more challenging by picking up different types of objects or lifting your leg further.... #toestrength #physiotherapy #southvalleycinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

21.01.2022 Balance Training Exercise Instead of sitting on your bed or a chair to put on your socks, take this daily opportunity to get in some balance training. Stand on one leg as you put a sock on the opposite foot, then switch sides. Youll probably find that one side is harder than the other - thats normal!... #balance #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

19.01.2022 Squat and Stretch Mop the floor while squatting and stretching. Instead of mopping with a standard mop, try it the way your grandma used to do it - with a rag and a bucket of soapy water. Get down on the ground and mop the floor as you squat down or stretch. Youll be amazed at what a good workout this can be (and at how clean your floor gets!) #squats #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic... Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

19.01.2022 Stretch While Getting Dressed There are so many ways you can do this. Bend down to touch your toes before stepping your feet into your pant legs. Stretch your arms overhead as much as possible while you pull your t-shirt over your head. Basically, exaggerate your movements as you get dressed. These little stretches will feel really good and are a great way to start the day.... #stretching #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

15.01.2022 Hand Exercise - Crumpling Newspaper Still read the paper? Well, when youre done, take a sheet or two of newspaper and crumple it in your fist. Sounds silly I know, but its a pretty amazing wrist and hand workout. You can squeeze hard, then release tension, or try to crumple as much at once as you can. While youre at it, you can try the same thing with your toes to get some extra foot mobility.... #handexercise #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

14.01.2022 Overhead Stretch Everybodys got a broom in their house, right? Take a little pause while youre sweeping the floor, or just go grab it from the closet. Hold onto the handle with both hands, reaching overhead. Carefully bring your arms back in a circular motion (you may not get very far, but thats okay! Its still a good stretch). Play around with having your hands closer together or further apart. See what feels best or gives you a better stretch where you need it.... #overheadstretch #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

13.01.2022 TENNIS ELBOW VS. GOLFERS ELBOW - WHATS THE DIFFERENCE? While many people are familiar with the names of these conditions, there is less widespread understanding about how they differ. Both tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, and golfers elbow, or medial epicondylitis, are injuries to the tendons attaching your forearm muscles to the bone at your elbow. The epicondyle part of epicondylitis refers to the bony bumps or protrusions at your elbow. Lateral epicondylitis ...affects the tendons attached to the outer (lateral) side of your elbow, which are connected in turn to the muscles that extend your wrist backward and straighten your fingers. Medial epicondylitis affects tendons connected to the inner (medial) side of your elbow, which are attached to the muscles that flex your wrist and contract your fingers when you grip something. Both injuries are usually the result of repetitive strain on the tendons, and although you dont have to be a golfer or tennis player to experience them, the repeated forceful motions involved in both sports make them very common. The anatomical structures involved in tennis elbow and golfers elbow are very similar and the symptoms are also similar, but they appear on opposite sides of the elbow and arm. SYMPTOMS Common symptoms of tennis elbow include: Pain that radiates from the outside of your elbow and down your forearm Tenderness on the outside of your elbow Weakness in your forearm or a weak grip Pain when you grip things, twist something or, if you play tennis, especially with backhand strokes Golfers elbow symptoms are similar, but occur on the inside of your arm and include: Pain and tenderness on the inside of your elbow Pain that radiates down your arm from the inside of your elbow Weakness in your hand or wrist Numbness or tingling in your ring and little fingers Pain when you grip or twist things Pain when you flex your wrist

10.01.2022 A Different Approach to Doing Chores Why not shake things up a bit? We can use daily activities as an excuse to move in different ways. Try squatting down and turning as you do your daily chores - maybe kneel and twist as you put away your laundry or see how long you can stand on one leg while you wash the dishes.... Focus on each motion and on making it smooth. Practice having your mind in sync with your body instead of just going through the motions mindlessly. #dailychores #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

10.01.2022 PLANTAR FASCIITIS SELF-TREATMENT Regular, gentle stretching of your Achilles tendon and plantar fascia may help to ease your symptoms. This is because most people with plantar fasciitis have a slight tightness of their Achilles tendon. If this is the case, it tends to pull at the back of your heel and has a knock-on effect of keeping your plantar fascia tight. Also, when you are asleep overnight, your plantar fascia tends to tighten up (which is why it is usually most painful... first thing in the morning). The aim of these exercises is to loosen up the tendons and fascia gently above and below your heel. Can plantar fasciitis be prevented? There are certain things that you can do to try to prevent plantar fasciitis, especially if you have had it before. These include: Regularly changing training shoes used for running or walking Wearing shoes with good cushioning in the heels and good arch support Losing weight if you are overweight Regularly stretching the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon, especially before exercise Avoiding exercising on hard surfaces #plantarfasciitis #podiatry #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

09.01.2022 Practicing Deep Squats Really, when youre doing anything - be it petting your dog, picking up his poop, playing with your kids, or anything at ground level - getting into a deep squat whenever you can is just good practice. That doesnt mean you should be spending hours a day in a static squat - using the squat as a transitional movement to do things in your daily life can be a big shift from how you usually do things.... #deepsquat #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

09.01.2022 Piriformis Syndrome Characterised by a combination of symptoms including buttock or hip pain, Piriformis Syndrome (PS) is a painful musculoskeletal condition. There are more women diagnosed with PS than men, with a femaletomale ratio of 6:1.... Piriformis Syndrome is a disorder that occurs when your sciatic nerve is compressed and/or irritated by the piriformis muscle as it passes deeply through your buttock, resulting in pain. Sometimes the condition is called ‘pseudo sciatica’, as it is often confused with pain in the nerve resulting from a lower back disc bulge. The location of the pain is often imprecise, but it is often present in the hip, coccyx, buttock, groin, or distal part of the leg. Usually beginning with single-leg pain, tingling, or numbness in the back and/or buttock area that can extend down the back of the leg (thigh) following the sciatic nerve and causing sciatic nerve pain. 08.01.2022 Switch it Up Doing almost anything with your non-dominant hand feels super weird (unless youre amongst the lucky few to be ambidextrous), but its a good way to get your brain ticking. 04.01.2022 Ways to Get More Movement Simple Ways to Practice at Home Your home is probably the easiest place to get more movement practice. You do so much around your house that you probably dont even think about! Any part of your morning or evening routine, or other things you do around the house, can be an opportunity to change things up.... Sit on the floor while doing things. Most of us spend most of our time sitting on a chair, couch, in the car, or on other raised surfaces. But how often do you sit on the floor? Probably not too often. Try changing things up a bit. Sit on the floor while folding your laundry or watching Netflix or petting your dog. Shift your position periodically, seeing how it feels to sit cross-legged vs. in seize vs. in a wide leg stance vs. in a long sitting position. Try reaching forward or to the side to get a good stretch as you do whatever youre doing. #movement #physiotherapy #southvalleyclinic Https://www.southvalleyclinic.com.au

Unfortunately (and disappointingly) myotherapy has been deemed non-essential which means that Elise is unable to offer her exemplary service until restrictions are lifted. 2. Our group exercise classes also are on hold for the time being. 3. Opening hours are reduced to Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 9am- 5pm (later times available by appointment. You can always... call and leave a message or email and well get back to you asap.
