25.01.2022 Keeping your pet's weight in check...... so important! Seeing overweight pets is probably one of my biggest pet peeves! (That and seeing dogs being fed pasta/rice, veg and mince, but that's a whole other post!) It is up to us and only us to keep our pets at a healthy weight. We control how much they get fed, we need to be accountable. There are many reasons I transitioned to feeding fresh, whole foods. Ned, my staffy being the problem dog that he is, needed some serious ch...ange in his life. He has had 2 orthopaedic surgeries, numerous skin cancers removed, horrendous joints, typical 'staffy allergies' and everything in-between. I have had more comments in the last few years on how he 'looks the best he's ever looked' (from people who cringe when I tell them what he is fed mind you). So, I do truly believe it has been the best change for him as an individual. The best part is, his weight has never been easier to manage. It's awesome!! He is no longer on a commercial food that is crazy high in carbohydrates, that was a massive contributor to his weight. I'm not saying you need to do what I do. I'm saying please be mindful of the quality and quantity of food your pet is getting. (This includes all those extra treats too!) Overweight pets are at higher risk of: - heat stress, especially coming in to the warmer months. - joint issues (can be very costly!! ) - pressure on vital organs, such as the heart. - reduced life expectancy. - respiratory issues. - type 2 diabetes. - high blood pressure. Just to name a few! Have a look at the chart, see where you think your pet falls. If you think you need help, reach out! Ask your vet, ask me, reduce the amount of food your pet is getting (or increase if underweight). Make changes Have a look at the feeding guide on your pets food, it is only that, a guide. It is not what your pet necessarily needs. Feed the individual pet in front of you.
