25.01.2022 Severe to extreme heatwave conditions are expected to affect large parts of western and south-western Queensland over the coming days. Community members are strongly urged to look after their own health and safety and to check in on those family, friends and neighbours who may be more prone to heat-related illness to make sure they are okay. ... These include the elderly, infants, overweight and obese people, pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with some pre-existing health conditions. If you’re working outside, be sure to take precautions to ensure you keep cool. For instance, work for 1520 minutes, then rehydrate and cool off for 510 minutes before resuming. But if at all possible, avoid working outside while the current heatwave conditions persist. Drink plenty of fluids and don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink drink regularly throughout the day unless you have a specific condition and are under doctor’s orders to restrict fluid intake. Urine colour is a good guide to hydration it should be clear to light straw-colour, not dark or gold. And remember, never, ever, leave children, or animals, or anyone, unattended in cars in the heat. Temperatures can rise very rapidly and can be fatal in a surprisingly short period of time. #howweconnect #southwest #communities #heateave

24.01.2022 Today is World Patient Safety Day. No one should be harmed in health care and across the South West we have a number of assurances in place to ensure our patients’ are safe. These include: - We have implemented and embedded patient risk assessments which help us plan individualised care in partnership with the consumer and their loved ones. These are led and informed by evidence based practices that aim to mitigate risk and ultimately keep our patients safe i.e. Falls, pr...essure injury. - We monitor and measure performance against evidence based best practice principles/ processes/ standards and other peers, with the aim of continual improvement. - We have a strong focus on training and performance accountability in regards to role request , mandatory training. - We foster an open and transparent reporting culture that ensures we are learning from events that occur, with the aim of prevent harm of others. Safety of health workers has a significant impact on safety of patients and in view of this, the theme of the day is Health Worker Safety: A Priority for Patient Safety highlighting the safety of health workers as a prerequisite for safe patient care. #howweconnect #southwest #communities

20.01.2022 Jan Saunders is the South West Hospital and Health Service's #SWspirit recipient for the month of September. #SWspirit is a regular initiative to recognise staff who exemplify the organisation’s spirit through living our values in the way they work every day. Jan has been a Home Care Worker for the Charleville District Home Care Service for approximately seven years.... During this time, Jan has shown herself to be a wonderful advocate for her clients always giving 110% of herself. Nothing is too much trouble when it comes to ensuring that her clients stay healthy and are supported to live in a clean and comfortable environment. It is obvious to anyone who knows Jan how much she loves the work she does. Her bubbly personality is very much appreciated by her clients and she is always ready with a cheery greeting and interest in her clients’ lives. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, some of Jan’s clients have not been able to visit their families or have family drop by, however she has gone out of her way to ensure that special occasions are celebrated and acknowledged in some way. Thank you Jan for embracing South West Hospital and Health Service values and demonstrating quality, compassion, accountability, engagement and adaptability in everything you do. #howweconnect #southwest #communities
