05.01.2022 Lesson Learnt to finish of the year 2020 (as if it wasn't challenging enough!) Being a small locally owned and operated business, we have learnt a lot in our first 16 months as new business owners. We have had a great run with wonderful customers and also with fellow trade business’ helping us to grow and learn, however, we recently received our biggest lesson! A local established Real Estate business organised a new kitchen to be installed for one of their rent...al properties - long story short.after months of chasing them, no payment was received and we had to remove our first kitchen (unfortunately we don’t give away free kitchens haha). It was only after the kitchen was removed that talk of payment options became available from the local business once they stopped financially benefiting from the property - and only if they could have the kitchen put back in yet still no support for the labour, materials, and subcontractor bills that our small business had to wear for 3 months while the kitchen was being used by renters. We can understand that real estate agencies act on behalf of the homeowners (in this case the only correspondence was done with the agent, never the owner), but they should not go ahead recommending and accepting plans and quotes for large renovations if they aren’t prepared to pay on their behalf if the owner can't be reached for months, especially when the property continues to be occupied and rent received. As a small business, we have learnt who we can and can’t trust to commence and complete work for without upfront payment - however, this has shown us that we need to be very careful with some larger local businesses acting on behalf of unreliable investors and to make sure no favours will be done again.
