23.01.2022 Friday was a good day. Finally got a dozer track around the back end of this bloody fire and burnt back off it to tie it all in. Hard to fathom the tiny flame t...rickling thru the timber is the remnants of the Dunns Road Fire that has been responsible for so much carnage. And Monday proved an even better day as rain fell on the fire ground. For 3 weeks we have been committed to this campaign. Bloody pleased to see it all finished and both trucks finally back in the shed !! See more

23.01.2022 #Update Dunns Road Fire- General Overview. Crews today consolidated containment where possible. Aircraft to assist were not able to effectively be used due to ...smoke and poor visibility. Heavy Plant continue to work with a focus on securing the Northen and Western edges of the fire and where possible to the east. Weather conditions have eased and the fire has been downgraded to advice overnight.

21.01.2022 Fire Spread Prediction for Saturday 4 January 2020 There are a number of dangerous fires burning in the Shoalhaven, South Coast, Snowy Mountains and areas surro...unding Greater Sydney. Severe to Extreme fire danger is forecast for these areas tomorrow with temperatures in the 40s, very low humidity and strong winds. A south-westerly change will impact inland fires tomorrow afternoon and evening, and a gusty southerly change will impact coastal fires from late tomorrow afternoon, reaching Sydney around midnight. These conditions will make fire behaviour erratic and very dangerous. This map displays the predicted fire spread and the communities that may come under threat from embers or fire fronts. Other surrounding areas may still come under threat if conditions change, or if fires breach containment lines. There are concerns for the areas of: - The Shoalhaven Region from Burrill Lake, north to Nowra - The South Coast from Batemans Bay to the Victorian Border - The Snowy Valley area from Tarcutta to Tumut in the north, south through Batlow and Tumbarumba to Khancoban and Jingellic - Snowy Monaro region from Adaminaby to Cooma, then south-west to Jindabyne, Perisher Valley and Thredbo. This includes all of the Kosciuszko National Park. - Areas surrounding Greater Sydney Southern Highlands, parts of Western Sydney and the Lower Blue Mountains There may potentially be new fires burning in these areas that we do not yet know about, which may threaten you without warning. Potential spread area - you should not be in this area on Saturday. Move to a large town outside this area, or if you are on the South Coast, move to an area that has already been burnt or go to the beach. Stay away from bush fire prone areas. Potential ember attack You should not be in this area on Saturday as new fires could start and spread quickly. If you are in the area of the general areas on this map, be vigilant for new fires that may start well ahead of the fire front.

11.01.2022 There wont be any hair cuts but the barbers pole is up. Last week the 30m communications tower was installed at the new fire conttol centre. If you didnt know the site location before driving past you will now. Its a stand out landmark.

11.01.2022 Congradulations to Captain Frank Austin (Mundarlo RFB) on being awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal for is dedication and commitment to serving his community

10.01.2022 "We are not environmental bastards." NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons on hazard reduction burning, which he stresses is not the panacea for stopping fires spreading.

09.01.2022 The new South West Slopes Fire Control Centre construction is progressing well and is nearing completion. There is still some electrical fit out, landscaping, IT work, and commissioning to take place over the next month or two but all is on track

08.01.2022 Dangerous Fire Conditions - residents urged to be prepared. With temperatures set to soar over coming days NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is urging communitie...s to prepare. District Manager for South West Slopes Zone, Inspector Tom McDevitt, said conditions over the coming days, particularly on Saturday, will be dangerous due to high temperatures, strong and gusty winds and low humidity. Whilst there is little or no fire activity across the South West Slopes Zone (Cootamundra Gundagai Regional Council and Hilltop Council) at present, this could rapidly change. Currently the Dunns Rd fire is burning into the southernmost part of the zone in the Ellersle Nature Reserve south of the Hume Highway and Tumblong village. Under Severe or above fire conditions this fire has the potential to escalate quickly and impact communities north of the Snowy Mountains Highway. As weather conditions deteriorate into Saturday it is expected that across the Zone we will experience Severe and possibly some Extreme bush fire danger weather similar to or worse than New Years Eve on Tuesday this week. NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) warning residents to remain vigilant throughout the summer months and particularly during long hot weather events as predicted. Inspector McDevitt urged locals to be aware of the heightened risk and prepare themselves and their property for the potential bush and grass fires in the area. Grass fires can be particularly dangerous because they start and spread quickly, potentially destroying not only homes and stock but also lives and livelihoods, Inspector McDevitt said. Were asking motorists to avoid driving through or stopping in long grass, even if it is just for a few minutes, as the heat from a cars exhaust can be enough to start a fire. Reduce the use of anything that may emit sparks such as welders, grinders, motor bikes, mowers and slashers Farmers can help prevent fire from entering or leaving their properties by establishing firebreaks around paddocks, homes and other valuable assets like sheds and equipment. Inspector McDevitt said preparations should also include filling in a Bush Fire Survival Plan and having a conversation about what the household will do in the event of a fire. It is important for South West Slopes Zone residents to have a completed and practiced Bush Fire Survival Plan and to know what they will do in the event of a fire, Inspector McDevitt said. Bush Fire Survival Plans are available for free from www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or from any Fire Control Centre. They are simple and quick to complete and can assist in making decisions that can protect you, your home and your family from bush and grass fires. Residents can also stay up to date by downloading the Fires Near Me NSW app, updates on fires or fire danger ratings and Total Fire Bans at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or by calling 1800 NSW RFS (1800 679 737)

08.01.2022 Group Captain Stephen N Megan Luff, Gundagai Group South took A Current Affair into the heart of the fire ravaged areas around Batlow and Adelong areas in his own backyard. In true Luffs style he tells it how it is. Remember moving forward we all need to lookout for each other each day.

07.01.2022 A huge shout out to all our amazing fathers out there who do such an amazing job! Happy Father's Day! #nswrfs

07.01.2022 BUSHFIRE APPEAL UPDSTE I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Tumblong RFS Captain Stephen Luff and his wife Megan today. He had some heartbreaking stories ...to tell of his experiences in the height of the Dunns Rd Fire. Stephen was responsible for briefing the SWS Zone Crews - many from Young, Harden and Boorowa areas everyday while the fire was ongoing. As a fire captain, he was involved with this fire event for over 20 days. His role included management of local and visiting RFS crews, organising meals, accomodation, briefings twice daily, and crew rotation. In that time he stepped away from his own farm to help others. Stephen is still looking out for his community after the fire. We were privileged to hand over $2000 to help those in the Tumblong area who have lost homes. We are still taking donations of cash and gift cards in store. #dongesiga #community #donations #helping

06.01.2022 In keeping the good news coming on this Sunday night, the Dunns Road Fire burning in the Snowy Valley has also been contained tonight. This fire started on Dec...ember 28 and has burnt out more than 333,900 hectares. Crews battled for a number of days through challenging conditions to contain this fire. A huge relief for local communities. There will still be smoke emanating from across this fireground as unburnt pockets of bush land burn out.

05.01.2022 People have asked how the building of the new South West Slopes Zone Fire Control Centre is coming along. Following a project board meeting the build is now 60% complete and progressing well. This is the second of the Next Generation Fire Control Centres for the RFS (the only other one is at Deniliquin). Whilst it is exciting for the volunteers and staff of SWSZ to be nearing completion, due end of June, it is also a substantial investment in the community of Harden and the Cootamundra Gundagai Regional Council and Hilltops Council Local Government Areas. Furthermore throughout the construction period to date approximately 50% of the work completed has been undertaken by locally and regionally based trades which is great to see.

04.01.2022 Watch and Act - Dunns Road (Snowy Valleys LGA) For people in the area of Tumbarumba Road, Tumbarumba township or Taradale Road, it is advised you leave this are...a now, before conditions get worse. If you are in this area you are advised to travel north towards Wagga, through Adelong via Batlow Road and Old Tumbarumba Road then the Hume Highway and Sturt Highway. Follow the advice from firefighters in the area.

04.01.2022 Volunteers of South West Slopes Zone and Residents are invited to attend an open day for the South West Slopes Zone Fire Control Centre on Saturday 14th November from 9am until 3pm. Located at 4559 Burley Griffin Way.

Both internal and external works are 98% complete with the commissioning phase, roadworks, landscaping, and IT projects yet to be completed.
