23.01.2022 Have you ever been told your arthritis has been caused by ‘wear and tear’? Do you have a sore knee or two, but haven’t really done much to cause thepain? Well that’s the problem, not doing much at all! A common misconception is that arthritis is caused by too much movement in the joint, when in fact chronic underloading is more harmful to joints than overloading. The movement of water in and out of hyaline cartilage allows the supply of nutrients and removal of waste. Th...e movement of your joints and loading them keeps them healthy. Sedentary behaviour is one of the major causes of arthritis, rather than wear and tear! 22.01.2022 For some, Christmas is a wonderful time of year filled with joy, peace, family, summer fun and fond memories. It can, however, also be a time for stress, sadness, frustration and overindulging. The long list of tasks that are required for a family get together, for instance, can be overwhelming just looking at it! Persistent, unrelieved stress over the silly season can adversely affect the body in multiple ways which can take a long time to recover from. Therefore, man...aging stress using simple strategies is an important part of the season! Here are some simple tips to have a happier and less stressed season: 1. Be mindful of what you drink Its easy to think of alcohol as just that, but we often forget that when we indulge in alcohol we are also indulging in sugars and carbs! You may feel excellent while drinking but there will also be a point where your body’s nervous system cannot keep up and you will feel yourself dip down again. 2. Reduce your expectations Most of our stress and the pressure we feel comes from how we think. Often it is our unrealistic expectations that are the root of our dissatisfaction. We do not have to believe everything we think, and nor should we. Learning to lower our expectations is not only a great way to reduce stress but also to have more fun and enjoyment out of life. 3. Enjoy your holidays moment by moment Use the time you have before the holidays to plan and cope ahead with stress. Be mindful of not spending too much time dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. By bringing yourself and your attention back to the moment you can prevent yourself from thinking apprehensively about the future. Being proactive in your planning with these tips can improve the Christmas holidays, making it more enjoyable and memorable (with less recovery time!). #christmas2020 #christmasiscoming #stressfree #stressmanagement #anxietyrelieftips #mentalhealth

10.01.2022 How can you ease your post workout soreness? Relative rest, but keep moving throughout the day. Go back to the road construction analogy. It needs a lot of building material and produced a lot of waste. So to help the re-building process, lets support your sore body part with more supply [oxygen, food, blood flow], and take away the waste quicker. When it is REALLY sore, we are not going to have another high intensity exercise session which can lead to overuse of muscles or i...njuries. But not moving is also not helpful, as you stopped the chain of supply and disposal. Therefore, do some gentle stretching, walking, cycling, swimmingetc throughout the day. just enough to keep the blood flowing and keep up with the circulation to up the repair. Also, you may do some gentle self massage or book in for a massage, using a foam roller is also a good way to self massage. A cold/hot bath may also be another option. **If the soreness remains more than few days or is getting worse, please contact one of our friendly physiotherapists .** #physiotherapy #physiotherapist #physio #workout #postworkoutstretch #doms #delayedmusclesoreness #musclepainrelief

03.01.2022 Being in a relationship isn’t all chocolates and roses, sometimes there are disagreements and anger. Having disagreements is a natural part of a relationship but what differs a healthy relationship from a not so healthy one is communication style. Researcher Dr John Gottman found 4 communication predictors of an unhealthy relationship, labelling them ‘The Four Horseman’. These four predictors are: Criticism, Defensiveness, Contempt and Stonewalling. Although healthy relations...hips will sometimes have these, the unhealthy relationships will have these more often and won’t work to repair them. Criticism in a relationship is different to a critique or voicing a complaint as they focus on specific issues that arise. The criticism Gottman is referring to is an attack on your partner at the core of their character. For example: Complaint: I was scared when you were running late and didn’t call me. I thought we had agreed that we would do that for each other. Criticism: You never think about how your behaviour is affecting other people. I don’t believe you are that forgetful, you’re just selfish. You never think of others! You never think of me! Fear not though, Gottman did uncover an antidote for this faulty communication style, the antidote being: The Gentle Start Up. The Gentle Start Up takes away from the attacking nature of criticism by complaining without blame. This means starting the conversation in a gentle or soft manner and steering clear of ‘you’ statements. By using ‘I’ statements and explaining what you need prevents the conversation turning into an argument. For example: Criticism: You always talk about yourself. Why are you always so selfish? Antidote: I’m feeling left out of our talk tonight and I need to vent. Can we please talk about my day? Offering your partner the opportunity to fix the issue that has come up. Stay tuned for the next three Horsemen and their antidotes! #thefourhorsemen #criticism #relationships #psychology #psych #psychologist #mentalhealth #drjohngottman #johngottman
