25.01.2022 Some photos from our residency in Margaret River with Ella Sutherland, before the pandemic took hold. One of our amazing hosts, Sam, has been working hard on the old Darnells Trading Post in Witchcliffe. When we are able to gather again we hope to celebrate it. In the meantime you can find Ellas reflections on our website:https://bit.ly/3aQ1KFk... #internationalartspace #spaced4 #spaced4ruralutopias #ruralutopiasinmargaretriver #margaretriverprintmaking #ellasutherland #witchcliffe
25.01.2022 Our programs here at International Art Space are a culmination of two+ years of creative activity. Sometimes work created during the spaced residencies continues its narrative across venues, sometimes it is a catalyst for new initiatives. Augur, a little work of warning features in The Gods Of Tiny Things, an animation directed by artist Deborah Kelly, currently being shown around the world.... Made originally as an instructional, demonstration piece during the collage workshop Deborah organised at Kirsten Kjaers Museum during her spaced 3: north by southeast residency it turned out to play a leading role in this apocalyptic animation artwork. The Gods Of Tiny Things won first prize in the Fotogenia Festival in Mexico City in 2019, is shortlisted for a prize in the St Kilda Film Festival !and has been curated into a number of other festivals and exhibitions. Congratulations Deborah and collaborators! Image courtesy of the artist.
25.01.2022 As the project kept taking new turns with each pandemic update we decided to walk and breathe in the fresh air. We would come back, but in a different form #internationalartspace #spaced4 #spaced4ruralutopias #ruralutopiasinmargaretriver #margaretriverprintmaking #ellasutherland

23.01.2022 During her spaced 3: north by southeast residency Linda worked closely with Donna Reid, a local advocate and artist. Donna spent many years in Leonora, responsible for galvanising awareness of the importance of the former Gwalia miner's living quarters, which consisted of over a dozen buildings in the Gwalia ghost town, including miners’ cottages, single men’s camps, Patroni’s Guest House and Mazza’s Store. As a result the Gwalia townsite precinct is now listed on the State ...Heritage Register and connects to the Gwalia Museum, making it an important stop for people travelling in the Goldfields region. Part of the exhibition installation for the spaced 3: north by southeast exhibition at the Art Gallery of Western Australia will now form a permanent exhibition display in the Goldfields town of Leonora. #internationalartspace #spaced3 #spaced3northbysoutheast #lindapersson #donnareid #spaced3artists #gwalia #Leonora

21.01.2022 spaced 4 artist Ella Sutherlands practice centers on how visual language written, crafted or performed functions as an aid for social mobility, movement and the development of utopian visions. Her project in Margaret River will collate related print ephemera from libraries, archives and other relevant sites to inform the creation of a visual-documentary in the form of an alphabet. This typeface will be developed with the aim of telling utopian stories of the archive that... have not been told; to examine how the voices of these contexts may be embedded in the form of artefacts, and to think about the capacity of printed matter to embody the context surrounding its creation. The project will also look to the traditions of poetry, experimental visual forms, activism, diary writing, and other modes of cultural expression in the creation of self-determined space. #internationalartspace #spaced4 #spaced4ruralutopias #ruralutopiasinmargaretriver #margaretriverprintmaking #ellasutherland

20.01.2022 For many travelling up and down the Kwinana Freeway or Mandurah train line the landmark at Cockburn was a curious one: Faces of the Community (2006) by Marco Marcon and Rodney Glick, piqued as much admiration as it did scorn. The work was a composite of over 250 photographs taken of members of the Cockburn community.... The folks at Semaphore would like to hear your views on the recently removed public artwork. They are building a layered archive of this artwork via memories, reflections, facts, reviews, opinions and hearsay and have issued a call out to people to respond. Texts up to 200 words and/or up to three images can be submitted to [email protected] by midnight, 31 May, 2020. https://semaphoreart.net/Call-out-words-of-the-community

19.01.2022 Vale Kate Daw Kate was one of the IASKA artists, at Kellerberrin during 1999, working on stories, fragmented memories, extracts of conversation, paintings, photographs and videos, all used in the exhibition Notes and Sources. Daws grandmother was an Esperance CWA stalwart, and Kate was particularly interested in finding out more about her grandmothers life, the role of the CWA, and the changing identity of women living in rural communities. Sourcing her grandmothers origin...al journals, Daw had a starting point for the many stories, memories and experiences of rural women. During her residency Daw worked with 17 local women in a series of workshops. With work from her previous exhibitions, the interviews with the two city women and her grandmothers stories as a backdrop, the workshops became an exchange of experience between Kate and the participants. Accompanying the exhibition Daw also produced a 70 page publication echoing aspects of the show as well as detailing community involvement. Our condoleances. International Art Space
