20.01.2022 When looking for a way to attract/buy good quality leads for your business make sure you are getting leads, not just names and details of people who may never become clients. There are plenty of advertising programs, which offer the promise of leads, but deliver names and contact details of people interested in an attractive prize, such as a trip to Fiji or a new car, etc. If you are in the business of selling home loans or accounting services, what would you do with someone ...who signed up for a free trip overseas. Of course, you can approach them to find out if they may indeed need your services, but this is no different to cold calling. Before you sign up and pay for any lead generation program just check if the leads you get are actual leads for your business: 1. Do they have a need/want for your services? 2. Are they willing to pay for your services? One of the main reasons start-up businesses fail is that they don’t ask the right questions upfront to assess market demand for their product and service. Even when market research is done if you pick the wrong market (family and friends) or don’t ask the critical question - would you pay the asking price for my product/service - you won’t know if you have a viable business model. Marketing, like most things, is quite simple when you get down to the basics. 14.01.2022 Which one is more important in your organisation, Strategy or Operations? Do you have a personal preference for one or the other? There’s often much debate around the need for strategy versus the need for operations and action. It is also interesting to see that this debate is often won based on the preference of the decision maker (whether they are more strategically or more operationally inclined) rather than the need of the business or the situation.... A lot of start-up businesses, as well as businesses in growth, choose the path of operations, getting some runs on board and keeping busy, instead of taking the time to think through strategic options and decide on the most viable and sustainable one. Big companies, on the other hand, can get stuck in the cycle of planning and reviewing, rather than acting and testing the success of their plans and strategies. What helps remove the conflict between strategy and operations is a method successfully employed by project management it’s called agile project management, where the project planning and implementation stages are broken down in mini cycles of thinking and doing, rather than having one big and complex planning stage at the start. Another thing that helps companies enjoy the benefits of both strategic and operational management is having a good mix of key decision makers from both camps, strategy and operations. So the real issue is not choosing between strategy and operations - it’s more about how to use both strategy and operations as equal partners, rather than fighting siblings.
