20.01.2022 Weve had several clients with young families faced with the limitations in their existing homes in terms of room to move, space for the kids to play [and the adults to retreat] and inadequate storage. Sometimes theres no other option but to up and move. Quite often though, the solution can be found by identifying inefficiencies in spatial planning, reorganising spaces within the existing building envelope, and of course extending out or up to create more floor space. This... home in West Hobart has cracking views and the family love the central location with its proximity to the city and local conveniences only problem is, theyre rapidly outgrowing it! The proposed alterations will see the demolition of a previous split-level addition with a new two-storey building in its place recreating an open plan KLD area at entry level and creating space for an additional bedroom and living spaces underneath effectively doubling the floor space of its predecessor within a similar footprint. http://www.sparkdesignlab.com.au/westhobart/
20.01.2022 We were lucky enough to be engaged by Nina Burton to help her renovate her house in the heritage precinct that was once the Zinc Works Village. One of the major changes was rezoning her house to move the laundry from prime position and adding some north facing glazed doors. Its made an amazing difference to the whole space. Her old cold house is now warm and inviting.
18.01.2022 The amazing @natalie_mendham has come through again with some great photos of a multigenerational family home in Sandy Bay. 16.01.2022 This project was an almighty transformation for the owners. From a cold, dark and tired cottage to a warm, light filled home in Sandy Bay. Thanks for the snaps Nat Mendham, and thanks for being fabulous Em Reid and Ella Nicholson.

13.01.2022 Thinking back to our weekend activities: Design and Construct of a tiny (cubby) house for our tiny family members . Its important to us that we lead by example and re-use and up-cycle waste where we can. 12.01.2022 A new build provides an opportunity to take the things that you love about your existing home and abandon the things that arent working. The clients for this Moonah home are moving closer to where the familys day-to-day activities are increasingly taking place. The aim is to spend less time traveling backwards and forwards in the car and simply enjoy more time at home. The design preserves the open-plan style of living they have enjoyed in their previous home with increased efficiency and flexibility of floor space. http://www.sparkdesignlab.com.au/moonah/

10.01.2022 We had the pleasure of working with the Taroona High School SRC today collaborating on our concept for a new Honour Wall. The wall will celebrate individual achievements, place and the history of the school. We were impressed by the high level of engagement and interrogation of the ideas that had been presented to the student leaders. #honour #senseofplace #taroonahighschool #studentrepresentativecouncil #architecturedesign #tasmanianarchitects #sparktaculardesign

08.01.2022 "You can't tell me that if this product, by all reports, has been used widely in the industry for 10 to 30 years, that major suppliers ... didn't know where this product was going to end up." Fire officer Absolutely terrifying report into the (mis)use of composite panel cladding in the Australian building industry on ABC's Four Corners program last night. Architects certainly have a responsibility to know the ins and outs of the products that we specify... but we should also ...be able to rely on the technical advice that we seek from suppliers when we look to specify a product or proprietary system. For large suppliers to have knowingly marketed and promoted a product that has been described by experts as 'solid fuel' simply because it was $10/sqm cheaper is horrifying! It's akin to the decades of deception by Big Tobacco and could well be this century's 'asbestos' for the Australian Building industry. http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2017//31/4726881.htm

06.01.2022 Was witness to plenty of passionate debate regarding the future of public transport in the Greater Hobart area at the, "Is Hobart's Transport Future On Track?", public forum earlier this month at the Hobart Town Hall. The Hobart Northern Suburbs Railway forum panel featured the Hon. Peter Gutwein - Treasurer and Minister for State Growth, Kristie Johnston - Mayor of Glenorchy, Peter Newman - Professor of Sustainability, Curtin University, Bob Cotgrove - Urban Geographer and T...ransport Economist and was hosted by Chris Jones, Editor of the Mercury. The City of Hobart has developed a draft Transport Strategy which is currently open for public comment. You have until this [Friday 24 AUG] to have your say and can do so by following the link below. https://www.hobartcity.com.au//City-of-Hobart-Transport-St

01.01.2022 Its rarely possible to satisfy ALL the wants of an unrefined brief within the confines of a realistic project budget. Getting the most out of a finite budget will involve developing an understanding of which spaces are critical and how they will be used. If we can let go of a perceived need for big houses, we can allocate resources into achieving outcomes that are spatially economic, with high levels of thermal comfort and quality of finish. This residential extension in Whi...te Beach sought to create some additional room for a growing family. By minimising the floor area of secondary spaces and rationalising circulation throughout a small overall footprint for the addition was possible. Large areas of glazing and raked ceilings with exposed trusses in the living space, make the most of natural light and provide a connection to the surrounding bush. http://www.sparkdesignlab.com.au/white-beach/
01.01.2022 Reflecting on the challenge of upgrading a heritage building in Battery Point to modern safety standards for @newhorizonspreschool without compromising the cultural heritage value of the existing building.
