24.01.2022 Did you know that as from the 1st of January 2017 Smoke Alarm Legislation changed dramatically ? Well for all existing homes, any existing smoke alarms manufactured more than 10 years ago must be replaced. Any new homes built from January 2017 must be fitted with hard wired smoke detectors on completion.... With regards to rental properties and any renovations to your home you must also replace any existing smoke alarms manufactured more than 10 years ago. In each of these situations you must replace your current smoke alarms with Photoelectric smoke alarms. Previously smoke alarms in most dwellings would be Ionization smoke alarms, these alarms can quickly detect the small amounts of smoke produced by fast flaming fires, such as cooking fires or fires fueled by paper or flammable liquids. This type of smoke detector is commonly used in kitchens, however they are prone to nuisance tripping. The main difference between ionization alarms and photoelectric alarms is that the the ionisation alarm will typically respond about 30 to 90 seconds faster to fast-flame fires than photoelectric smoke alarms. However, in smoldering fires ionization alarms respond an average of 15 to 50 minutes slower than photoelectric alarms.
