25.01.2022 profoundly true

24.01.2022 Wise words by Dr Shefali on social media and our children...

22.01.2022 Hi readers - below are some child mental health tips for COVID that might be helpful...more to follow; 1. Stick to a routine, get dressed in bright colours and move it move it move it (insert song from Madagascar here ) preferably for 30 minutes a day . 2. Know that behavioural issues will happen with children right now, respond gently. Do expect increased anxiety, worry and fears, difficulties with separating or sleeping, limit testing, meltdowns and possibly nightmares.... Keep the routinechildren feel safe in routines created by others, it helps them to know what comes next. 3. Be consistent and focus on emotional connection. Connection before correction is always a great strategy at any time, more so now. An example of this is: I see your really frustrated right now, but its not ok to kick the wall, you can kick the ball outside instead, how about we go do that. Connect, limit set and redirect. 4. Focus on attachment . It’s a scary and unpredictable time for children, focus on strengthening your connection through time with children in following their lead, through things like playing together, physical touch, reading books, and by reassuring verbally there you are there. 5. Children see and hear everything, which means they can become very frightened about what they hear. The amount of information out there is overwhelming, the constant news cycle is draining for all of us, and is often filled with alarmist, sensationalised, and at times incorrect information. It is best to limit conversation about COVID, including social media and news, around children. Find a trusted source and check in once or twice a day, set a time limit on how much you watch i.e no more than 30 minutes. 6. Remind yourself, and your kids, this is temporary. We will return to being busy, feeling free, safe and connected. 7. Point out the positive to kids. There are many good news stories, look for the helpers in the world and point them out, see how people supporting one another. Look for the miracles, they do happen. When information is heavy, counterbalance with hope. Be Well J

11.01.2022 As child I often used to read late into the night and early hours by torch...don’t think my mother ever found out. We know that stories play a vital role in the development of children, fairytales in particular are essential for kids, they capture the imagination, portray moral lessons, and connect children (and adults) to their own lives, dreams and anxieties. Anyone visiting my office knows immediately how much I love Alice in Wonderland! Please encourage your child to read or listen via Amazons amazing free access...

06.01.2022 Which is why things like teaching children emotion words as well as labeling the feelings of the characters in the child's play, the child's feelings and the feelings of others is such a critical part of play therapy (Kevin O’Connor).

01.01.2022 Today is National Sorry day, our thoughts go to all the people, children especially, who never found their way home to family, to community, to country. The disconnection from culture and from identity was intentional, the effects across the generations incalculable. In the same way healing also needs to be intentional, deliberate and supported.

01.01.2022 Play...fundamental to development! All children have the right to play. This great video created by the International Play Association based on Artcle 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is an important reminder that play, in all its forms is so so important to our children and our community. https://youtu.be/5tjRPWPhIfA

01.01.2022 Silver Sparrow is an organisation we created two years ago to support children in need. As many of you will know we have a heart for supporting orphaned and seperated children in South Africa where we actively support around 25+ children. We believe in, and are committed to education as a basic right for children. In addition to our other supports, we are proud to fund six children in accessing an education that we know will give our kiddos the best opportunity for a good future. A future beyond the generational poverty and disadvantage that continues to affect so many. Below is our quarterly update.
