25.01.2022 Susie Dee is the director of Archimedes War, a play written by Melissa Reeves about a young boy who experiences post traumatic stress from playing violent video games. Archimedes War had just started rehearsals at Northcote Town Hall when the building had to close due to COVID19 but Susie and the team are working towards a premier at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre in 2021. We interviewed Susie Dee a few weeks ago, if you didn't see it in our enews, here are a few highlights:... *How are you filling the days?* I still have quite a few theatrical projects on the go at different stages and in different forms - navigating these through zoom meetings/emails - from play readings/developing new ideas/revisiting old ideas. Filling out copious forms for small pots of money - small grants/job seeker/keeper...etc. etc. And walking a lot and yes... Baking bread! *Has the pandemic shifted your approach to practice?* Well I am not on the 'floor'... this is where I flourish so have allowed my self a little more time for contemplation and time to reflect - I had been on a crazy theatrical wheel for the past 2 years... *Is there anything you are working on during lockdown?* Very lucky to be part of the editing process for our film (Shit)... working remotely as a collective - the editor creating sections - and watching/taking notes and having weekly zoom meetings *Whats the first thing you want to do when ALL restrictions are lifted?* Take a long drive and visit my daughter in Alice Springs

23.01.2022 Our Black Lives Matter. A collective statement from members of the Darebin Aboriginal Advisory Committee: We, the members of the Darebin Aboriginal Advisory Com...mittee, call for change across this country. We call for national accord and personal acceptance of the fact that black lives matter. For all our people, our lives, families, lands, waters, culture, lore, history and identity as First Nations people have always mattered. We believe that there is no better time than now for all Australians to join with us in the struggle to bring to an end the centuries-long racism and social inequity that has been forced upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of this country. We call upon all Australian governments federal, state, territory and local - to do more. We call upon Australian businesses - corporate, private, large and small to do more. We call upon all to join in, with a sense of urgency and determination, the fight against injustice, racism, inequity and discrimination. Every Australian rests and rises on Aboriginal land. Every Australian has benefitted in some way from the loss and dispossession inflicted upon Aboriginal people past and present. Every Australian has a conscionable right to take a firm and unwavering stand against injustice, racism and inequity. In the spirit of unity, we reach out to all Australians, asking that you challenge yourself by asking: What is it that I can do to make a difference? A difference that will make my community and this country a safer, fairer and more just place for all to live and prosper. Signed, Ellie-jean Singh Jenaya Kastamonitis Erica Higgins Alan Brown Charles Pakana

19.01.2022 Don't miss Ash Flanders talking on ABC Melbourne at 8:00pm tonight! END OF. by Ash Flanders, directed by Stephen Nicolazzo is less than 2 weeks away, folks!
18.01.2022 Ash Flanders is the writer and performer of END OF. This performance work premiered as part of Darebin Arts Speakeasy at the Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre. Due to COVID19, the season had to be cut short. We caught up with Ash a few weeks ago to see where he's at. *Can you briefly describe your practice?* I'm a writer-performer, which means when I drop a line it's called 'editing' and not 'incompetence'.... *What were you doing when we went into lockdown?* I was performing my most recent (and best) show END OF. which dealt with mortality and the fear of losing my ageing parents - thank god that's all fine now! *Is there anything you are working on during lockdown?* I've been going through a lot of hideous personal stuff which will no doubt end up in my work so.... yes? *How are you filling the days?* I video chat with friends, I walk, I watch (rewatch) Judge Judy, I write down things I'm thinking about and then get frustrated at how poorly I've articulated myself. In that sense very little has changed. Oh, and I've become obsessed with the Jann Arden song 'Insensitive' and have been singing it constantly in my tiny apartment. *Has the pandemic shifted your approach to practice?* It's certainly made it harder to see the value in creating right now since we don't know when we'll all be able to come together in a theatre again. I'm trying to use any moment I feel motivated to get as much done as possible because those moments vanish just as quickly as they appear. *Whats the best thing you have been part of or privy to during COVID19?* I've been dealing with the medical system a lot and the best thing I've seen is the commitment and care from the nursing staff - it's a boring answer but it's the truth. *Whats the first thing you want to do when ALL restrictions are lifted?* Go to a restaurant! I want to eat food and drink booze and talk nonsense with the people I love - I might even try listening!

Sorry, Ash. * We're sorry, Heather does not actually appear on stage. 17.01.2022 Michele Lee is the writer of Security, a performance work which was programmed as part of Darebin Arts Speakeasy at the Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre in August 2020. Due to COVID19, the play has been postponed but will premiere as part of our season in 2021. We interviewed Michele a few weeks ago, if you didn't see it in our enews, here are a few highlights from it! * Can you briefly describe your practice? * I'm a playwright, who writes for the stage but I also create live... art, write for audio and for screen. * What were you doing when we went into lockdown? * On Saturday 14 March I was at a friend's wedding. It was full of artists, theatre and visual arts. There was a gorgeous air of generosity, as we peacocked around in colourful wedding attire and ate from byo vegie food platters (I made pakora and lemon semolina cake). Naturally, for an event filled with theatre artists, there were a lot of conversations about what 'might' happen for theatre as the night before MICF had just cancelled. * Has the pandemic shifted your approach to practice? * Like I said, because the pandemic has pushed towards going back to my desk job, and then that means managing that alongside my creative stuff, I've been thinking more long-term and thinking more about what sort of work I want to make, who I want to work with, because I won't have as much time to explore things I might only be vaguely interested in. A friend put it to me that it was sort of like now needing to do a strategic plan for myself, you know, outlining my values, my objectives, and measuring any new opportunities against this. And getting used to saying no and not getting too hung up on missing out. I guess it's about clarity, about sustainability. * Whats the best thing you have been part of or privy to during COVID19? * A friend started a photo event, where you dress up and post pics online every Friday. It's called #coronahighfashion. It's been fun doing this. It can take up a bit of time though! But that's ok, as I am trying to savour those days where you're not measuring your satisfaction around being productive. * Whats the first thing you want to do when ALL restrictions are lifted? * It might not be the first thing but I will be back out there seeing live performance.

13.01.2022 rawcus are an award winning ensemble and were set to premiere their performance GLASS with American choreographer, Marc Brew as part of Darebin Arts Speakeasy. GLASS was scheduled for August 2020 but is now postponed to 2021. We cant wait to bring you this incredible show but for now, you can hear from the ensemble themselves. We asked them a few questions about what they're doing at the moment. * Can you briefly describe your practice? Rawcus is a long-term ensemble of 15 ...radically diverse performers. Together with a core team of designers we have been creating contemporary performance for 20 years. * Is there anything you are working on during lockdown? We have moved rehearsals onto Zoom and are working on the creation of some short films together. We are also all baking cakes so that we can simultaneously eat them together on Zoom next week for our 20th birthday celebration. * How are you filling the days? The Ensemble are filling their days by going on walks, dancing in their living rooms, getting to know their neighbours, home schooling their children, enjoying riding their bikes on empty streets, watching dance performances on the internet where you can see the sweat fly through the air, cooking and eating a lot. Some of us are playing lots ping pong, creating art projects from home, writing grant applications and one of has created a giant loom to keep herself occupied. * Has the pandemic shifted your approach to practice? At the core of our practice is collaboration, connection and relationship. This hasn't changed but we have been forced to adapt and creatively seek out new ways to find connection, meaning and creativity when we cant be in a room together. We have been delighted and surprised to discover that our ability to pick up subtlety and nuance, exchange energy with each other and bounce off each others ideas still feels possible even when we are separated. * Whats the best thing you have been part of or privy to during COVID19? The clear night skies, the sparking green of nature, the return of birdsong and a feeling that the natural world has been afforded a small moment to breathe again. * Whats the first thing you want to do when ALL restrictions are lifted? Hug each other. We cant wait to dance together, laugh and return to the normal rhythm and flow of conversation between a large group of people that is not determined by the internet platform you are on. by Pia Johnson
