22.01.2022 Today, we celebrate Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness day. According to the Speech and Language Development Australia website, DLD is diagnosed when children fail to acquire their own language, including understanding and articulating their ideas and feelings for no obvious reason. Recent research has shown that, on average, 2 children in every class of 30 will experience DLD severe enough to hinder academic progress. Here are 10 facts about Developmental Language Disorder from the RADLD website. You can visit the RADLD website for more information and resources on DLD: https://radld.org/

17.01.2022 There are 1.2 million Australians with communication disability. Communication disability takes many forms. It may be present at birth (e.g. cerebral palsy, hearing impairments and cleft palate), occur as a result of physical, intellectual or sensory disability or a mental illness, emerge during early childhood (e.g. stuttering) or during adult years (e.g. stroke, neck/head cancers), or develop in the elderly (e.g. dementia, Parkinson's disease). Speech Pathology Week (23-29 August) is the opportunity to make all Australians aware of those in our community who have a communication disability. Speech pathologists work to ensure everyone is communicating with confidence.

09.01.2022 At this time of the year, a lot of parents are coming to us asking for a consult regarding their children’s speech and language skills. This is particularly for children commencing Prep next year. Those who have attended Speech Pathology sessions before would have heard the terms ‘recasting’ and ‘modelling’. So, what exactly are ‘recasting’ and ‘modelling’? How do we (as clinicians and parents) strategically teach children to put their words together in the right way? This post says it all. https://www.banterspeech.com.au/resources-to-learn-gramma/
