25.01.2022 Daniel’s Dad loves walking for exercise. He starts almost everyday with a 5 km walk and on average walks around 13,000 steps each day. It’s a great way to stay fit physically but what he also loves about it is that it is emotionally balancing too. Some days he just loves to take in the sounds and sights of nature as he walks and some days he likes to listen to some of his favourite music as he walks. Both are ways that help to detach from the everyday rush. ... During the COVID-19 restrictions, Daniel and Daniel’s Dad participated in Aspect’s Walk for Autism. This was a great way to keep Daniels anxiety around the uncertainty of this time a little in check. We both found this extremely beneficial and also took the opportunity to take photos of the scenery we encountered as we walked. As many of you know, Daniel has a unique eye for photography. Daniel’s Dad has loved taking a few snaps of his own whilst on his walks so we thought we might showcase a few here for you. They’re not up to Daniel’s standard but we think they’re not so bad. 18.01.2022 Getting to know Daniel - Regular travel to Melbourne Prior to COVID-19, I made regular trips to Melbourne, usually on a weekly or even twice weekly basis. I’d travel to Melbourne to attend meetings related to my disability advocacy and to socialise. My last trip to Melbourne was to do our public speaking roadshow on the Mornington Peninsula and in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. Not going to Melbourne has given me a greater appreciation for living in Regional Victoria....Continue reading

16.01.2022 GETTING TO KNOW ‘DANIEL’S DAD’ - MOVEMBER This November, Daniel’s Dad has been growing a moustache as part of a fundraiser called Movember. Usually, Dad’s face is clean shaven however he acknowledges this is challenging for Daniel to replicate due to his sensory issues and motor challenges with shaving, but this month, #danielsdad has been growing facial hair.... He’s raising money to support men’s health, especially focusing on three of the biggest health issues facing men: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Check out these photos of Dad growing his ‘mo’ and support him at: https://au.movember.com/mospace/14335965. Also handy to have a bus stop on my doorstep, though as I will be only a short walk from the Bendigo CBD walking will be my primary form of local transport (Daniel) [Image Description: Collage containing Daniel mowing the nature strip with a bus shelter in the background at the top of the photo, then two photos at the bottom of Daniel popping the cork of the bottle of Prosecco, sitting at a small table containing nibblies. 13.01.2022 A big Happy Father’s Day to my Dad! This preschool image of me represents my struggle to make sense of what is happening and how my Dad has helped me to adapt to a world that’s not necessarily Autism friendly. My childhood would be described as me watching the world around me but not being able to participate Dad has been and continues to be an amazing advocate for my needs. However, he has also helped me live and adapt in a world that isn’t built for Autism. He’s helped me ...adapt to changes of routine, see things from the non-Autistic perspective and given me the skills I need to be part of the world I live in ‘Happy Father’s Day’! Love Daniel. [Image Description: Black and white photo of Daryl lifting a young Daniel with a bowl shaped haircut, framed by a hole in a piece of playground equipment shaped like a sun. 04.01.2022 It’s Daniel’s birthday today so I thought I would share a few photos showing the different sides of Daniel. I’ve included his leadership in the autism community, some of the acknowledgments of his community service, his advocacy work as we tour with Speaking Insights, a snippet of some of our travels and the people we have met along the way and also some of the fun side that not everyone gets to see. Daniel & I miss hitting the road and meeting all the wonderful people alon...g our journey and COVID-19 has certainly been more than a challenge for Daniel at times but I am so proud at how he has worked to overcome this and remain mostly positive. Keep on spreading the hope, understanding and joy that you bring to the world Daniel. I couldn’t be more proud of the young man you have grown to be. (Despite the little shit you used to be * that’s a private joke between father and son and I can picture Daniel as he reads this, buckled over in laughter saying Daaaaadd ) Happy Birthday Daniel. Have an amazing day and I can’t wait to watch on as you create more amazing memories. Love you mate! Daniel’s Dad
04.01.2022 Getting to know Daniel! - Independent Living (or Interdependent Living?) I’ve been living independently since the age of 20, or as fellow self-advocate Dr Stephen Shore says, we’re really interdependent. To help me prepare for independence, my family involved me with the household chores. I helped with household cleaning and mowed the lawns....Continue reading
03.01.2022 Happy Birthday to my late Mother, Janene! In my childhood, my mum was an amazing advocate for me. She would write a profile about my needs to show school staff, therapists, carers and others involved in looking after me. She included a drawing of me. She created a book containing her drawings and cut-outs from catalogues of various objects and scenes as a reference guide to familiar objects. It was a tool to help me develop my speech and helping me better understand the world... around me. Mum created a duplicate copy of the book in case it was loss, including redrawing the catalogue cutouts by hand. She also volunteered at my special school, especially by contributing her artwork and joining us on school excursions. I deeply appreciated that opportunity to spend time with her and she was a comfort to me when I wasn’t enjoying the noise of our school’s mini bus. She was one to celebrate my progress also, evident in the comments of our school journals. She helped prepare me for new situations also, including writing social stories to help me prepare for the fact that I would no longer wear nighttime nappies when I turned 8 years old. Sadly my mum experienced a long-term illness during my childhood and died when I was just 8 years old. I am so thankful however for that she contributed to my life and believe she continues to encourage me from heaven.
