25.01.2022 Here is a question I am often asked by those speakers who want to turn a hobby into a profession: Q: In a market where nobody seems to want to pay you for what you do, how do you make them pay what you’re worth? A: Becoming the speaker that is worth paying for!...Continue reading
25.01.2022 Can I be a professional speaker too? How many times have I been asked that question? On Page 80 of his book, How To Become A Million Dollar Speaker (you should definitely buy this book if you are serious about speaking), Steve Siebold states, Talent is a factor..but speaking skills are more important for overall success in the business. Positioning and marketing are both important, but you have to have the goods in this market to make itOnce you are in front of a live a...Continue reading
09.01.2022 So, you want to get paid to speak? But how much? Surprisingly, few are, initially, able to answer this.... As with anyone going into their own business there are a lot of dreams and hopes at stake. Having conducted small business seminars and coaching for around 20 years, often all the talk at the very beginning is about the business or the products or location or how. Grounding time! The first two questions I ask any person going into business for themselves is, How much do you need to earn as an income for yourself to survive? and How much do you want to make to live a good life? Because if you at first don’t have enough income to survive pay the bills, pay the mortgage, pay for food than the pressure that comes from not having that minimum income is enough to distract from and potentially destroy the great idea you may have. Secondly, there is a big difference between survival income and a living income. Survival is the minimum. Living is about lifestyle. Initially it may be about survival. Do it right and it becomes a living income. Do it even better and it can be a life-changing income. Very few speakers make the living income on day one. Most I have met started while working another income until such times as their speaking income took over. So, in planning your speaking career you need to have a budget to start with (so boring!!!!). After that you have to seriously look at where your income will come from in the short to medium term in order to support both your choice to be a speaker and your current budget needs. After all, a rumbling stomach and a car for a home can certainly take your focus off the long-term goal. Notice, I haven’t even dealt with the business budget. That comes after your personal budget. My rational? Because your personal budget (in effect your wage) is a business expense that the business needs to generate over and above all of the other business expenses. And knowing your budget allows you to figure out how many speaking engagements you need a year and what fee you need to charge in order to support that budget. But, that is another post. For now, work the dream and make it a reality.
