25.01.2022 Your feedback is being sought on the three options on the table for the Colac Otway Shire Councils electoral structure. The community can have its say on thre...e options proposed for Colac Otway Shire Councils 2020 electoral structure, following the release of a report from the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC). The preliminary report is part of the VECs electoral representation review of Colac Otway Shire Council, which commenced in January 2019 with information sessions and a month-long public submission period. The VEC asked community members to consider the number of councillors and whether the council should be subdivided into wards. Forty-four preliminary submissions were received, all of which were carefully considered in drawing up the options. The VEC also analysed demographic, geographic and electoral data and trends. Colac Otway Shire Councils existing structure is unsubdivided with seven councillors. The options outlined in the preliminary report are: Option A: Seven councillors elected from an unsubdivided electoral structure Option B: Seven councillors elected from three wards (two threecouncillor wards and one singlecouncillor ward) Option C: Nine councillors elected from four wards (one fourcouncillor ward, one threecouncillor ward and two singlecouncillor wards) Community members are encouraged to get involved by reviewing the report and making a submission. You have one month to consider the options and make your submission supporting or opposing the options. Submissions responding to the preliminary report should address the options and must be received by the VEC by 5.00 pm Wednesday 24 April. Submissions can be made online at vec.vic.gov.au, by email or by post. A public hearing will be held at 4.00 pm on Tuesday 30 April at the Colac Otway Performing Arts & Cultural Centre for anyone who has requested to speak in support of their submission. If there are no requests to speak, the hearing will not be held. The preliminary report is available at vec.vic.gov.au. Copies are also available for inspection at Colac Otway Shire Council offices. PLEASE NOTE Electoral representation reviews consider: - whether the local council has the appropriate number of councillors - whether the local council should be unsubdivided, with councillors elected from the whole local council, or subdivided into wards and - if subdivided, the number of wards, ward boundaries, and the number of councillors per ward. Electoral representation reviews CANNOT consider: - a change to the external boundaries of the local council - whether the local council should be divided - whether the local council should be combined with another local council.

20.01.2022 Colac Otway Shire Council is encouraging the community to have its say on proposed policies which could allow sponsorship of sporting facilities, tributes to sporting identities and benefits for the community. Colac Otway Mayor Jason Schram thanked the community for its submissions, following Councils decision in September last year to investigate community sentiment regarding the possible renaming of Central Reserve Colac and/or components of the reserve. Council received ...153 survey responses and a majority supported retaining the name of Central Reserve, while there was support for structures or facilities to be named after local sporting administrators or sportspeople who had achieved excellence, Cr Schram said. There was also support for considering temporary naming rights of Sporting Reserves or parts of it to provide an opportunity raise money. The temporary right does not alter the base name, for example GMHBA stadium is still Kardinia Park. Council has considered the public submissions regarding Central Reserve, and has now developed a draft Temporary Naming of Sporting Reserves Policy, a draft Memorial and Plaques Policy, and draft Recreation Reserve Advertising Signage Guideline which would apply to all sporting venues if adopted. The draft Temporary Naming of Sporting Reserves Policy provides the framework for how temporary commercial naming would be considered. The draft Memorial and Plaques Policy provides the framework on how structures can be named after individuals. The draft Recreation Reserve Advertising Signage Guideline provides the framework on how recreation reserves could be signposted and adds additional information to the planning scheme. Reserves will retain their names; Central Reserve will remain Central Reserve, but the proposed policies would create an opportunity for local sporting clubs to raise revenue for themselves through temporary naming rights, Cr Schram said. Creating this opportunity places ensures that our clubs that play outside the shire have the same opportunities as their rivals. If you consider the GFL, a number of ovals have temporary names like The Gordon Tafe Oval at St Albans Reserve and Bisinella Oval the Lara Recreation Reserve. Council encourages the community, particularly those involved in local sporting clubs and businesses across the shire to review the proposed policies and provide feedback over the next six weeks. The communitys response to each policy will be considered by Council within two months of the start of the consultation. The draft policies will be online at www.colacotway.vic.gov.au and feedback is invited from today.

16.01.2022 Quite a lot of concern regarding the increased Colac Cinemas price on Facebook today. Facts so far: - Prices arent set locally by staff, but by the owners. - Its likely due to increased Colac Otway Shire Council rates... The prices were dropped significantly a couple of years ago. Heres a few stories of how we got to where we are today. https://colacherald.com.au//colac-cinema-lease-change-han/ https://colacherald.com.au//11/cinema-tenant-gets-reprieve/

10.01.2022 QUESTIONS FOR COUNCILLORS The local election is in full swing and as always we've invited all potential local candidates to have a chat on air to introduce themselves and provide some background on why they're standing and what they can offer when representing us. To be fair and transparent with all interviews, we pose the same questions to all candidates selected from our List of Ten. So - what questions would you put in our bucket to ask the potential Councillors ahead of the local election?

09.01.2022 DO WE SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON DEVICES? In todays fast-paced highly digitised world our daily demands often see us racing between things with long to-do lists in hand, inadvertently multi-tasking our way through our days that never seem to have enough hours in them. And, while we dont yet have the magic pill or antidote to our busy lives, we are, however, at choice around those little things that one after the other make up our hectic lifestyles. When it comes to technology, ...Continue reading

06.01.2022 ATTENTION: We want to bring a few things to your attention regarding donations to our thrift shop and the mission of The Salvos Colac. ... You may be aware of the incredible volume of donations that make their way daily to the front doorstep of our welfare centre every night. You may have also driven past this weekend and seen the incredible quantity of donations accumulated in the usual place. 1. IF these donations were given in good quality and intended for sale in our store, it is well and truly possible that these items are now non saleable due to damage from other items being thrown on top, or by weather damage. 2. IF you are using our doorstep as an easy and free way of getting rid of your rubbish, that is not the purpose of our service. 3. Unfortunately, there are people in the Colac community who help themselves to these donations on a regular basis, and your good quality donations could never make it to our shop floor. 4. The purpose of your good quality donations is so that our store can fund the work of The Salvation Army in Colac. We have many initiatives and programs waiting to commence, but we are restricted by budget and funding. Did you know that 10s of 1000s of dollars are spent each year on dumping unsellable items? An incredible waste of good money! 5. We have very restricted volunteers and space in our shop, we are not on premises 24/7 and are not physically able to constantly drag in all the donations outside of shop hours. 6. The only accessible door from the outside is our welfare door. The door that daily has a large volume of furniture and other items stacked in front of it. We are often faced with a huge job of heavy lifting and sorting just to get in the door. This causes delay in opening our shop and seeing to our clients. PLEASE CONSIDER YOUR DONATIONS ROUTINE! While we are so incredibly thankful for your donations, please stop and think about when and what you are donating. Is it good quality? Would you buy this in a store? What is the weather like? Could I drop this off in store hours? We need you to help us help you! We need to work together towards a clean, healthy and cooperative community. We love Colac and we love our community! THANKYOU!

01.01.2022 Once you hit send, you never know where your personal images might end up. Personal image sharing is commonly referred to as sexting, sending nudes or se...nding a pic and typically involves sending or receiving sexually explicit photos, messages or videos. It can be an uncomfortable topic to talk about with your children, but its an important one. Parents and carers should consider the following approaches: o Encourage open discussions with your child about what content they might be sharing o Try to avoid judgement and labelling o Talk to your child about some tactics they could use if they felt pressured to send an image and encourage them to think about the consequences their actions can have. This week a new Australian TV series, The Hunting, aired on SBS Australia. It explores personal image sharing between teenagers and is a great opportunity to start a conversation with your children. If your child is involved in personal image sharing they may need help and support. There are a range of services or resources you can access from Kids Helpline Official and the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. 01.01.2022 Colac Otway Shire Council is urging anyone with information about a vandal attack at Colac Botanic Gardens on the weekend to contact Colac Police. Colac Otway Shire Council Mayor Jason Schram said Council was disappointed that vandals had ripped branches off and broken the tops of trees, including significant species that had been cultivated from some of the Botanic Gardens oldest and rarest trees. There is damage to about 15 trees, mainly along the northern bank of the gar...dens and one in the centre of the gardens, including a Wollemi Pine which is one of the worlds oldest and rarest plants. Most of the trees are between two and five years old and whoever is responsible for the damage has reached through wire cages to break branches; it was a deliberate attack. Our Parks and Gardens staff have also reported further damage to the Botanic Gardens fence along Fyans Street between the Hesse Street entrance and Gellibrand Street entrance. Someone has knocked rails off the fence so they have possibly entered the gardens from Fyans Street. Anyone with information which could help identify the vandals should contact Colac Police Station on 52 300 000. See more
