19.01.2022 A lifetime’s collection of Queensland Spearfishing Records So much work. So much history. Disneyland for divers!

19.01.2022 Queensland is working towards getting our community back to normal while ensuring we continue to slow the spread of COVID-19. Queensland Health has advised it i...s essential that you continue to do the right thing and abide by the restrictions that are in place https://www.covid19.qld.gov.au/ From 15 May 2020, public gatherings for recreational purposes, such as fishing, are limited to 10 people. This applies to fishing from shore as well as on a boat. If you do choose to go fishing, stay within 150 km of your home, keep 1.5 metres from others and practise good hygiene. State Government boat ramps currently remain open, and Seqwater and Sunwater dams reopened on 2 May. Check with local authorities about other fishing locations before you head out fishing. For any queries about boating, please contact Maritime Safety Queensland (Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland))

14.01.2022 Media Statements: Minister for Transport and Main Roads The Honourable Mark Bailey Tuesday, March 31, 2020... Fishing and essential boat use to continue Queensland boaties can still take their boats out locally to fish or travel for essential reasons. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey clarified the rules for boaties as the evolving COVID-19 response restricted a range of activities. If you own a boat and want to head out in the water in your local community to fish for food this weekend, you can, Mr Bailey said. If you need your boat to travel locally in your community, you can still do that. If you want to head out on your kayak or stand up paddle board for exercise, you still can. State Government boat ramps will remain open to boaties. We want people to continue living their lives as normally as possible under the current circumstances, but the advice of the Chief Health Officer needs to be followed. No one should be leaving their home unless it’s absolutely necessary. Mr Bailey said recent national directives limiting public gatherings to two people or less and limiting travel to essential purposes still applied. This isn’t a special rule to let people out on the water for non-essential reasons this weekend, Mr Bailey said. There’s no reason for anyone to be taking the boat out unless it’s for essential travel to get to work, to and from your home, to local shops for provisions or catching fish for your family. Even then, there should be no more than two people, or immediate family members on board, and the social distancing rules everyone is being asked to follow still apply. Boaties should also be mindful of hygiene when putting boats in the water at public facilities. Mr Bailey encouraged boaties to continue monitoring the national health advice on COVID-19. As the nation works together to stop the spread of the virus, there is new advice daily. Boaties should be aware of the current restrictions on boat use, and be prepared for that advice to change again, should tougher rules to limit public movements and interaction come in.

10.01.2022 It is sad to hear of the tragic passing of 36 year old Buderim man Matthew Tratt, following a fatal shark attack off Fraser Island on Saturday. The Australian Underwater Federation (AUF) is the governing body for underwater sports and amateur diving in Australia, and we offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends involved. Below is a link to the fundraising page which has been established for Matthew. Please donate if you are able, his family needs your help.... https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-mathew-tratt039s-family Spearfishing is a great activity but like all sports it has its potential risks that must be managed properly such as shallow water blackout, boat strikes, entanglements and shark attacks. The AUF spearfishing motto is ‘Safe Sustainable Selective Seafood’ and there has been a national initiative called Spearsafe developed to further increase knowledge and improve safety for Australian spearfishers. Find some of our safety videos here:- https://www.facebook.com/Spearfishing-Queensland-AUFQ-1// We urge anyone wishing to get into spearfishing to join a recognised club and be guided by the safety initiatives and codes of practice plus the experience of those who have been spearfishing for many years. The AUF has clubs Australia wide.

10.01.2022 New Tweed Reef Designed For Multi Species Appeal! NSW’s newest offshore artificial reef will feature a specially designed 10m high fish grotto as well as inno...vative arrowhead reef modules boasting unique habitat features to attract and hold key sportfish including Spanish and spotted mackerel, cobia, kingfish, amberjack and samsonfish. DPI has awarded a contract for Pacific Marine Group to construct and install the new reef off Tweed Heads. The steel fish grotto is the reef’s centrepiece and will rise 10m from the seafloor. The grotto will be surrounded by 32 concrete arrowhead modules, each 5m tall and grouped in clusters. The new reef will be deployed 7.5km south-east of the Tweed Heads river entrance in about 25m of water. The centre point of 28 13.446 S, 153 35.508 E lies about 2.5kms off the coast of Wommin Bay. Following detailed stability assessments, the design phase is now complete with construction of the modules underway. Stay tuned for more info on the installation, which should take place in coming months. The grotto and various module clusters will be arranged to maximise upwelling of localised currents, meaning the reef system will have broad appeal to a range of target species including pelagic sportfish as well as mulloway, pearl perch, snapper and various bait species. The Tweed Reef will be the 8th purpose-built offshore artificial reef deployed off the NSW coast. Reefs already deployed include Sydney, Port Macquarie, the Shoalhaven, Port Hacking, Merimbula, Newcastle and Wollongong. See https://bit.ly/2XEIzJh for more details. The offshore artificial reefs program is another great example of your fishing fees at work!

07.01.2022 Latest advice from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Qld):- The direction is for you to stay home unless you need to go out for essential activities. The latest advice from Queensland Health is to #StayHomeSaveLives, so we strongly encourage everyone to stay home as much as possible. We urge you to stay as close to home as possible during these necessary trips and stick to local waters. If you are worried if it is too far, use common sense. For example, not driving... from Brisbane to the Gold or Sunshine Coast to go fishing. Public gatherings such as fishing are limited to two people (other than your direct household). If you do choose to go fishing, stay close to home, keep 1.5 metres from others and practise good hygiene. State Government boat ramps currently remain open to boaties. Recreational boating is not permitted unless it is for essential reasons such as exercising, fishing, getting to and from work, getting groceries or caring for close family. All of our Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) front offices are closed to the public until further notice. However, QBFP officers are still on the water, all commercial and recreational fishing rules still apply, and we will be undertaking normal compliance activity and action where and when required. COVID-19 is a rapidly evolving situation. As such, we encourage you to regularly check the latest information and requirements at COVID19.qld.gov.au. If anything changes, we will do our best to keep you updated. Some fishing locations such as state-owned and managed dams and lakes are closed, so check online before you head fishing.
