05.01.2022 The devil as they say, is in the detail. We were recently engaged to source a substantial quantity of high quality rail track section for a client wishing to implement a track replacement program due to concerns over their existing infrastructures condition and performance. Projects of this nature represent a potentially significant capital investment and as such, typically come with a detailed project scope stating the products dimensional, chemical and/or mechanical propert...ies. On this occasion however, the information was lacking in detail and instead we simply received an off-cut of track profile to be sourced. This cross-sectional sample (see attached) was also supplied with advice suggesting it was both old and made specifically for the "South African" market and it was from here that we started the process of sourcing. Initially, our team organised a NATA (https://www.nata.com.au/nata/ ) accredited review on the provided samples chemical and mechanical (hardness) properties. The results obtained in addition to information suggesting it was both old and was manufactured specifically for the South African market ultimately led us to deduce the following. 1. Measurements of the samples' profile, weight and suggestions it was specific to the South African market led us to determine it was in fact an ISCOR 22kg rail profile; 2. By establishing the samples time in service, we were then able to deduce the most likely source of the track itself (i.e. the original equipment manufacturer or OEM); 3. Correlating the NATA results with OEM's data sheets of the time, suggested the rail was therefore likely to be either Grade 700 (UIC-860-0 1986-2008) or Grade R200 (EN13674-1 2006) steel. This ultimately led to a preliminary guidance quote which, whilst very attractive, will need further qualification before being accepted. However, should you always replace products on a like for like basis? Steel like so many other materials has come a long way in the past decade or so and we always encourage clients to consider both the best and most cost-effective solution rather than the obvious (and often easiest) path of least resistance. The benefits often far outweigh the effort. In terms of this project for example, research papers written addressing the very issue of rail track life and performance (http://uic.org/cdrom/2008/11_wcrr2008/pdf/I.2.2.1.1.pdf ) show both tangible and potentially significant benefits can be had by adopting new technology so in short, always engage the right supplier and one who offers a superior sourcing solution rather than simply supplying the same product over and over again. This is what value adding is all about. Happily, we now continue working with our client in developing the best solution so on this occasion at least, we have managed to get things back on track.
