13.01.2022 ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) is generally a Phobia related to trying new foods. Parents of adolescents and children with ARFID know the stress and strain this can place on family relationships, particularly around meal times and family gatherings... not to mention the associated long term negative health issues it may trigger. It's curious that a person with ARFID might actually want to eat new foods, and may even like the smell and look of new foods, how...ever they are unable to bring themselves to taste them. A common reaction or reason is the fear of gagging or vomiting if they do. In the past, ARFID was placed in the same diagnostic category as 'fussy eating' or 'picky eating', however this is an unfortunate misconception. Typically, the fussy eater can eat foods but for various reasons chooses not to, whilst the ARFID person wants to eat foods but cannot. This is because ARFID is a phobic reaction to food. As real as a spider phobia, a snake phobia or flying phobia. Specialist Hypnotherapy is pleased to be associated with the Selective Eating Disorder SED/ARFID Australian Support Group. (Facebook link below). The site is affiliated with Felix Economakis, who is the most experienced and proficient SED/ARFID practitioner in the world today. The Rapid ARFID Therapy pioneered by Felix has been used on over 3,500 ARFID clients, with over 90% of adolescents and adults calmly trying their previous non safe foods after a single therapy session. Sessions are available at Specialist Hypnothrapy clinic in Ringwood, Victoria. Skype and FaceTime sessions are also available (and achieve the same success rate). If you, your family or friends would like information on Selective Eating Disorder (SED) or Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), log onto the FaceBook group below, and be part of a growing community building awareness and hope around SED/ARFID in Australia. https://www.facebook.com/groups/145750569442411/
