03.01.2022 Stuck for ideas on how to help calm your child on the go? Check out these ideas for a SENSORY BUM BAG! The sensory ‘bum bag’ is aimed to allow children access to their sensory tools at any time and hopefully swap the stimming behaviour to an appropriate sensory experience. This tool can be placed around the child’s waist or over their shoulder to encourage independence. The child could continue to meet their sensory needs whilst remaining apart of a group in the classroom as... well as keep them entertained when transitioning between tasks or places. How to use the Bum Bag: - Child to choose what items are placed inside (ensure they are appropriate and will not be too messy) - Ensure the child can independently put the bum bag on themselves - ‘Stop it and swap it’: With verbal prompting encourage the child to stop the other distractible or inattentive sensory stim and swap it by redirecting them to their own bum bag - It can be used as a motivator or a reward OR it can be used to maintain attention whilst seated at the table, completing tasks or playing independently when transitioning - Increase the repetition and encourage the child to wear the bum bag as often as possible, it is then more likely to be a part of their routine and will aim to increase independence and decrease other stimming. What to put in the bag? Any stimming toy that encourages tactile or visual stimulation (try not to buy the messy/ gooey/ noisy items as they are a hassle for later and will often distract the child or others around them).

01.01.2022 Practical Tips to Set up a Telehealth Space for Kids Choose a device that is stable, or can be placed somewhere without the child or parent needing to touch it. This will increase the quality of the video call and reduce potential distractions. If your clinician wants you to use a portable device for the purposes of therapy, they will let you know Find a room free from distractions, that is still under parental supervision. The kitchen/dining room is not great as it is of...ten noisy and other family members are moving around. Lots of our clients have a designated work space in a quiet room that they know to go to each session Ensure the desk is clutter free only have items out that the child will need for the session Have resources prepared. Sometimes your clinician may ask for you to gather resources to use during the session. It is important to collect these items before the session commences to ensure the session flows well Have a space behind the desk that is clear for your child to engage in physical movement. Often your clinician will want to engage your child with movement and it is a great idea if they don’t need to have to move the device or other items to do so See more
