25.01.2022 With the recent media exposure it's clear to me that ventures like SPECTRUMITE are worth the blood sweat and tears that go into them. I was sick of the top down one size fits all approach of some disability organisations that approached the assistance of people on the spectrum using the same techniques that didn't work in the exact same way. I was sick of the cotton wool approach - denying autistic teens and young adults the dignity of risk to learn, live, and occasionally sk...in their knees. I was sick and tired of people dancing around topics, avoiding certain phrases and asking me what offended me. So I started to do things differently. Designing my own approaches to remove the social isolation. The otherness. The anxiety and fear by providing a sense of community and accountability. At Spectrumite we design programs for the way the world really is. - often not very nice. Not the sugar coated topping it is often believed to be. We train our clients how to spot the types of people that pose a risk and prepare themselves to face them. We train them to withstand insults, to offer a hand in friendship with the other ready to guard. We encourage physical. Mental and emotional resilience. We are the metal heads. The cards against humanity players, the DnD nerds, the gamers the steamers, the dankest of memers. We are the side of the autism spectrum you rarely see. Those of us just doing our best to get by and trying to find a place where we fit. We are those with one foot out the door, hesitating before that next big step. trying to summon up the courage to ask that person out. To leap into the water. To raise one's voice and speak one's mind. We are SPECTRUMITES

25.01.2022 Autistic nomad. I'm not much of a traveller. Sure I've been to the states and seen the lovey things parts of Texas has to offer but I'm a guy who both loves nature and new environments with appropriate sensory control and is also terribly scared about getting lost. (I can forget directions after going somewhere a hundred times so the right gear is very important.) Over the last few weeks I've tried to step outside of my comfort zone and explore some of the gems in the local a...rea. I'll be sharing these adventures with you starting today. I haven't made up my mind as to where I'm going. But I'll be sharing my adventures and the animals, places and things and of course people that I meet along the way.

16.01.2022 THE ONE If you would raise your voice and give breath to what to you dare to, to speak your mind. Resisting judgment from those would judge that which you gave your air to.... If you would strain against that which seeks to limit you. Raising tired limbs to fend off the blows meant to cripple hurt and maim you. If you would strain and strive, spending sweat and blood and toil, and wait patiently till the rain gives life to your carefully tended soil. If you can wait in silence when the world is screaming "Now" and you can push onwards with conviction, though you're yet to reason "how" If you fight to live when there's nothing left in you to give, when the will that keeps you standing has been ground down. When you raise your fists to one two classes past you when they demand you throw down. When you walk down paths lit dimly where others fear to tread. When you can keep your calm where others lose their head. Then you will be the one who stands when others kneel. Then you will be the one who fights when others fear to. Then you will be the one who gives their all, though there be nothing left within you. You will be "the one"

11.01.2022 ANXIETY I am the little doubt like a worm gnawing on your brain, I am the niggling doubt driving you insane, mine is the voice whispering so cold, I am the shadowy shape that makes you turn your head. I am the creeping slithering sense of present dread. Anxiety - breathing ever fast, telling you that you are not good enough, the barrier growing ever taller, every step that you will take is one on which you'll trip, the sinking of your ship.... I am fear, that you have made, twisted like gossamer from thoughts that you have spun. Ring ring, ring ring, who just might that be down the line of copper optic, there's a catching in your throat the scratching swallow sliding down your mouth that pressure that strangles and chokes. Oh who am I. Every thought and twist and turn I am the grass so fit to burn and how, I cannot see, how could one as slow and sad and stupid hope to defeat me. Oh run, better yourself, improve your health, I'll be running right beside you, Oh, you're learning to fight, like the bag you strike I will deform and spring back just as tight. Breathe, try and breath deeply, you are pushing me away. I see you talking to that girl, growing confidence my kryptonite I am not silenced you will not be alright, Oh, you've got that job, but you will lose it and all of your so called friends do not care. Oh well beware, you've beaten me down, you've pushed me aside, your body grows harder, you've sharpened up your mind, The water you drink, drowning me out, the friend that you've made, the support and love, you were once my slave, breathing so deeply, I'm falling behind for I was the darkness that once plagued your mind.

05.01.2022 Autistic resilience. A guide for Parents. My advice for the "helicopter" parent. My mindset and buisness has always been focused on creating strong and resilient Spectrumites.... I survived years of physical and emotional bullying through most of my adolescent life. Teachers did not stop bullying. Authority did not stop bullying. Training my body to withstand physical abuse and my mind to weather emotional abuse was what ended bullying. In short I made myself too hard a target and bloodied the occasional nose. I grew up in a time where if you fell out of a tree and broke your leg, you climbed it properly next time. You did not sue the local council for damages. Many of the young people I work with begin their time with me in a fragile state. They are in poor mental and physical condition. Many of them are socially isolated and fearful of people. As ahead as some of the gifted young people I work with are. They are generally several years emotionally behind their neurotypical peers I don't claim to be someone who has all the answers and never has a bad day. I make a point of telling all of my clients not to put me on a pedestal. Autism rarely occurs in isolation. Often there are other comorbid conditions to complicate matters, sometimes a family can have two to four people on the spectrum. One thing that never serves these families is the prolonged period of childhood where a well intentioned helicopter parent I cannot count how many times I have been told "but I have autism" as an excuse for every manner of behaviour. My response is usually this. "Me too. Next excuse?" While I support areas where people can feel safe. The world isn't a safe place and we are deluding ourselves to think otherwise. The best thing you can do for your autistic teen or young adult is prepare them for independent living. Or as independent as possible. To teach them how to be as safe as they can be. According to my mother who has dealt with this issue first hand the biggest mistake parents can make for their kid on the spectrum is to try and smooth out every bump in their adolescent child's life. Yes. Disruptions in routine are difficult. Until your child learns to handle them. Yes. There are meltdowns and difficult behaviour. That should not be excused. Autism doesn't excuse arrogance, arseholery or apathy. Yes. It can be heart wrenching to watch your child deal with a social failure. But everyone has social failures. Skill does not improve without practice. If your kid is sixteen and mum is still making their bed and the kid is capable. You are not doing them any favours or preparing them for eventual independence. The more independent your child is. The more they can help themselves and also, help you. "Teach them so they will be ready to fly before you are gone. You can't teach them afterwards."

05.01.2022 I was thrilled to chat with Jessie Aiton from @ lifeonthespectrumprogram recently about the work I do at Spectrumite! We also had a chat about stimming, what that looks like and why we do it. Listen back: https://bit.ly/31ZZU23 Thanks for the opportunity, Jess. ... Give it a listen!

05.01.2022 Even in these difficult times it's important to remember that even we Spectrumites are inherently social creatures. It's been a tough few weeks for me. But I got up early enough to complain about the cold and decided to do something different three days running. I deliberately broke my normal sequence and routine.... It's important to keep in mind that a routine that causes you to stagnate and hate your day to day is not a routine that serves your interests. Changing things up can take a tremendous amount of will. It's easy for us to keep to patterns we know even if they are patterns that suck. But the conscious push to make a change is although exhausting. Entirely worth it. Now excuse me I am going to munch through some hand stuffed olives and enjoy my locally made marmalade on toast.

01.01.2022 WHAT IS A PUSHUP? When I first started training in martial arts we did a lot of push-ups and I didn't really understand the point. You did them on command. You did them as a punishment. You did them to advance as part of a grading. A push up is the movement of many groups of muscles willingly surrendering to the pull of gravity and then resisting it. Pushing UP against a force that wants to pull you down.... A push up STRENGTHENS through resisting a force. Many things in life are like gravity and a push-up. Something will pull you down and it's up to you to brace yourself and press against that force. It might be fear. It might be anxiety. It might be depression. It might be the urge to eat that second burger. It's still a force that must be overcome, or that force will ground you, limit you and ultimately add that little extra sprinkling of crap to your day. So push up against the forces that would seek to ground you. It might sting. But do it often enough and it will get easier.
