21.01.2022 SURPRISE! . After Therapist Elf Lavender arrived on Wednesday, another Elf arrived on Thursday! We are a busy practice and maybe we need more elves? His name is Jinx and he was sent to Spectrum Psychology Centre by Santa to receive a few therapy sessions before Christmas. However, Jinx had different plans and he stole the key to Santa's workshop and wrote he plans on having a four week holiday on the Sunshine Coast. True to his word, he disappeared the same day and was fou...nd the next morning fishing with Lavender and an unknown visiting Elf . We hope they've behaved over the weekend! . . . #christmas2020 #elfontheshelf #sunnpsychology #lavenderelf #tradition #theapistelf #laughteristhebestmedicine #christmas #festive #jolly #festiveseason #christmasdownunder #sunshinecoast #sunnycoast #queensland See more

18.01.2022 RELATIONSHIPS - PRACTICING NON-DEFENSIVENESS . . Oftentimes in couples sessions one partner feels attacked and therefore behaves defensively, usually with... a righteous indignation or innocent victimhood (both men and women do this). The Gottman Institute described it so well in their recent Marriage Minute (free to sign up, literally takes a minute to read, 2x per week). They explained that "responding and listening without getting defensive takes practice. It’s difficult! For so many, defensiveness is just a knee-jerk reaction rooted in the need to protect the idea of yourself as a good person with the right intentions. And it’s good to assume positive intent, especially when you’re interacting with your partner. So it’s important to practice taking a step back and making sure you understand the situation before jumping to your own defense. For example: . Did you remember to get toilet paper at the store? Now, before you counterattack, try taking a step back to assess: I feel defensive because I did not remember to get toilet paper. Am I being criticized or am I PERCEIVING this as an attack? My partner isn’t criticizing me, but I perceived an attack because I’m sensitive to the implication that I am lazy/forgetful/careless. Can I overlook that to keep this conversation on track? . If you can’t overlook it, that’s fine, too. You could say, I’m feeling defensive. I feel like you’re implying that I’m careless. Then they can help clarify and together, you can get the dialogue back on track and the toilet paper back in stock. . Be patient with yourself as you practice. You may catch yourself reacting defensively often, but it’s catching yourself doing it that matters. If you note it soon enough, you could even ask your partner for a do-over. . Did you remember to get toilet paper at the store? Who are you, my mother?! ...Actually, can I try again? Sure. I forgot. I can get some tomorrow if we’re not down to our last square. . . It is these little tweaks that increase compassion, trust and joy in a relationship . . . . #couplescounselling #efttherapy #gottman #gottmaninstitute #marriage #relationships #divorce #siblings #parenthood #conflict #deescalation #conflictresolution #fourhorsemen #gratitude #mindfulness #care #motherhood #parenting #fatherhood #fostering #mindfulness #pausebutton #selfhelp #resilience #wedding #dating #dateyourspouse

16.01.2022 POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD) . To be honest, for a psychologist I am not a big fan of diagnosing. Not only is there still stigma that exists around men...tal health (although as a nation we are doing way better than even ten years ago !), it can also be used as a shield. A shield to avoid taking responsibility and action towards your (mental) health. Things I sometimes hear are: "I do not do those things, because it can make me anxious". Or "my mother was depressed, so was my grandmother, so yeah, it runs in the family, not much we can do about it". . Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one of those diagnoses I believe are helpful to have. Although, mind you, this one does not have to be permanent. PTSD symptoms show up in brain scans and the symptoms are impairing in many areas of life. A diagnosis can help explain the symptoms and it can set the direction for the right treatment (such as EMDR therapy), instead of years of trial and error due to no diagnosis or the wrong one. Below is an image that may help to understand the criteria PTSD is based on (which is assessed using clinical judgement and validated questionnaires). . . 13.01.2022 CHILDHOOD TRAUMA PUSHSING YOUR BUTTONS? . Did you know that kids who have experienced trauma aren’t trying to push your buttons? . A few weeks ago I posted ...an article from WeAreTeachers (see folder 'EMDR and Trauma') called '10 Things About Childhood Trauma Every Teacher Needs to Know' . The artcile quoted Dr. Calaen Soma from Starr Commonwealth: "if a child is having trouble with transitions or turning in a folder at the beginning of the day, remember that children may be distracted because of a situation at home that is causing them to worry. Instead of reprimanding children for being late or forgetting homework, be affirming and accommodating by establishing a visual cue or verbal reminder to help that child. Switch your mind-set and remember the kid who has experienced trauma is not trying to push your buttons." Many children and adults on the autism spectrum need help in learning how to act in different types of social situations. They often have the desire to interact with others, but may not know how to engage friends or may be overwhelmed by the idea of new experiences. Building up social skills with practice can help enhance participation in ...the community and support outcomes like happiness and friendships. Effective Social Skills groups should: Provide structure and predictability Break down abstract social concepts into concrete actions Simplify language and group children by language level Work in pairs or groups with cooperation and partnership encouraged Provide multiple and varied learning opportunities Foster self-awareness and self-esteem Provide opportunities for practice so that skills are used beyond the group in real life settings *Excerpted from Social Skills Interventions: Getting to the Core of Autism developed for the Interactive Autism Network (IAN) by Teresa j. 03.01.2022 GREAT NEWS Australia! . . Since the 9th of October all Australians can access not ten, but twenty sessions per year with a psychologist through the use of their... Mental Health Care Plan! Every Australian usually has a right to ten sessions per calendar year, if they see their GP and receive a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). You initially get six and if you need more, you could receive four more. Due to the mental health impact of the Government restrictions in response to COVID-19, the Government has now created a budget for Australians to use the double amount of sessions, if needed. you do not have to have been directly impacted by the restrictions. Australians can use the sessions via telehealth or face-to-face sessions. . . Please note: having a MHCP does not mean the sessions are free. Every practice has their own fees, which usually differ based on clinical experience, clinical specialty and of course business costs such as overheads. The MHCP covers $86.15 for a psychologist and $128.40 for a clinical psychologist for a 50+ min session. The gap is an out of pocket cost, although a part may be covered by private health insurance. Since the Government restrictions were put in place, many practices have lowered their fees and sometimes a payment plan can be arranged. Be sure to check with the practice, before booking in a session. . . Find the info sheet here: https://www.health.gov.au//budget-2020-21-prioritising-men . We were worried about them, but then...look who came to the rescue: princess Elsa! She must've frozen the whole bunch, so the Elves could escape the next evening.
