23.01.2022 Another sad example today of a 13 year old boy in the US shot in his home after his mother called police. I said, he’s unarmed, he doesn’t have anything, he just gets mad and he starts yelling and screaming, she said. He’s a kid, he’s trying to get attention, he doesn’t know how to regulate. It is critical for law enforcement to be trained and understand autistic behaviours. To de-escalate and understand the diversity of the spectrum. ... #spectrumsupport #neurodiversity #asd #autismawareness #autismparents #police NSW Police Force #autistic

22.01.2022 Every child has the right to an education! Thank you to Kidspot for this eye opening article. There is a huge gap in our education system that needs to be addressed. This is not a case of me trying to force a disabled child into a mainstream classroom Kathrine says. Tyler is not suitable for a special needs school or a specialised autistic school. He’s capable of being in a mainstream environment but he would get lost if he didn’t have that support unit.... #autism #spectrumsupport #charity #education #autistic #asd #specialneeds #RoyalCommission #equalrights #autismacceptance #autismawareness #autismadvocate #bethedifference #bekind

18.01.2022 "Discrimination is all around!" Kathrine said. I try my best to stay composed and get him into the car, but I couldn’t help myself. He is a child! He is autistic! How do you feel picking on an innocent child?. They didn’t care, he was an annoyance and they had no empathy. I got into my car and burst into tears. Thank you Kidspot for this article. 18.01.2022 Still confused about face masks? A mask filters out large particles in the air. Face masks may protect others by reducing exposure to the saliva and respiratory secretions of the mask wearer. People with chronic conditions or compromised immune systems are at greater risk of more serious illness if they are infected with coronavirus (COVID-19). We must all take to care to protect those most vulnerable.... Social distance, stay home when you can, wear a mask in public and let's support and look after one another. #publicsafety #covid19 #coronavirus #autism #asd #spectrumsupport #togetherwecan

10.01.2022 Huge thank you to Yahoo Lifestyle Australia for this awareness article. In the past we have been isolated from family by choice and other attempts have seen us last five minutes at a family member's home. One year we lasted a few hours, she tells us. 08.01.2022 41 seconds.. Police tragically took the young life of Courtney Topic in just 41 seconds. Over the past several years Spectrum Support has worked with the Topic family, Law Enforcement, global leaders in the field and a neurodiverse team to ensure a tragedy like this doesn’t happen again.... Autistics are 6 times more likely to engage with law enforcement and often idiosyncratic behaviours can be mis-interpreted as aggression, drug or alcohol intoxication or resistance in the face of the law in many cases. In 2018 there were 154,570 mental health police interactions in NSW alone. That is a staggering 423 per day that had various outcomes. The trauma, anxiety and confusion for the majority of autistics that we have worked with have greatly supported the training Spectrum Support is now providing across the country. Our Autism & Law Enforcement training is an Australian first and is being recognised as a fundamental requirement throughout the force. Our thoughts are always with the Topic family and others who have shared a similar fate. Rest in Peace Courtney. 08.01.2022 National NAIDOC Week 2020 will be held from 8-15 November under the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be.’ The theme recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. NAIDOC invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations.... The 2020 Naidoc Poster, Shape of Land, was designed by Tyrown Waigana, a Noongar and Saibai Islander man. Tyrown’s artwork tells the story of how the Rainbow Serpent came out of the Dreamtime to create this land. It is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land.* Get involved!
