25.01.2022 What is breast cancer? Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Australia and the second most common cancer to cause death in women, after lung cancer. Breast cancer is the abnormal growth of the cells lining the breast lobules or ducts. These cells grow uncontrollably and have the potential to spread to other parts of the body. Both men and women can develop breast cancer, although it is uncommon in men.... Breast cancer symptoms Some people have no symptoms and the cancer is found during a screening mammogram or a physical examination by a doctor. If you do have symptoms, they could include: new lumps or thickening in the breast or under the arm nipple sores nipple discharge or turning in skin of the breast dimpling rash or red swollen breasts. Pain is rare. Causes of breast cancer Some factors that increase your risk of breast cancer include: increasing age family history inheritance of mutations in the genes BRCA2, BRCA1 and CHEK2 exposure to female hormones (natural and administered) a previous breast cancer diagnosis a past history of certain on-cancerous breast conditions There is also an association with some benign breast disease and past exposure to radiation. 19.01.2022 NIPT (Non Invasive Pre Natal Testing) NIPT is a new technology and is often known by its commercial name such as Harmony Test. The NIPT sample is obtained by a standard blood test drawn from the mothers arm and looks at the babys DNA in the mothers blood. The NIPT blood test is available from 10 weeks and is performed at our womens clinic in Randwick and Liverpool following an ultrasound scan to confirm the presence of a fetal heartbeat. ... NIPT results take 5 - 7 working days. An ultrasound at 13 weeks is necessary to screen for developmental abnormalities which NIPT does not detect and which may not be evident on earlier scans. This test has been shown to detect over 99% of pregnancies with Downs syndrome and over 98% of trisomy 18/13 with a 99% accuracy. Any patients with positive results will be contacted and genetic counselling arranged. Although NIPT is available for anyone, it is recommended for women over 35 years of age as they are considered high risk for chromosomal abnormalities. It can be performed earlier in the pregnancy than other types of screening, making it a popular option for anxious mothers. Spectrum Womens Imaging offers a NIPT package which includes a pre test consultation, viability scan, 13 week structural scan, communication of results to doctor and patient, and genetic counselling if required. This ensures all newly diagnosed women with hormone positive HER-2 negative metastatic breast cancer will be able to access the drug for $39.50 a month instead of $5000. We applaud Health Minister Greg Hunt for acting swiftly to ensure cabinet approval for this drug after the PBACs positive recommendation to add it to the PBS.
