22.01.2022 While in Launceston for work on Tuesday evening, our Lisa and Felicity participated in Connect42's 'Colleagues @ the Heart of Literacy' seminar. They were inspired by Christine D’Arcy’s presentation about adolescents with Developmental Language Disorder, and were primed to notice the Launceston Council’s efforts to pair visual and written information at Cataract Gorge Lisa found it very helpful when choosing where to dump her rubbish! (Bravo, City of Launceston Official ... and we’ve all been in that situation, Lisa!) #DLD #100percentliteracy #goodthinking

19.01.2022 In the early stages of my sons speech pathology sessions, I had doubts. Not because of the service or care he received, but because of my own, deep rooted and complex feelings about how I was doing as a parent. We hope this story brings some a little closer to comfort about all that speech therapy involves. And we thank our big girl for the courage in sharing her story with us. https://spt.com.au/big-girl-pants-coming-to-terms-with-my-/

19.01.2022 Tele Practice Work-Arounds for adults Imagine this- Youre due for your online video speech therapy session and an important piece of equipment (the iPad) cannot be found.... You adapt quickly (you got this!), grab the phone and log in on time. After giving the therapist a virtual tour of the house in the hope the iPad can still be found, you admit it cant, and give up. The session continues. You then realise the phones charge simply wont last; youll need that charger (where IS that thing?). Ah-ha! There it is! Under the desk! Hoorah! Under the desk you go and your frustrations now give way to giggles. And the giggles give way to guffaws when you remember THIS charger is the very short one and wont stretch beyond the desk at all. What to do? Of course, the ONLY thing to be done is to engage fully with the rest of session from there. You are under your desk, your therapist is above her desk, but there you both are connecting eye to eye. Progressing. Problem solving. Learning. Laughing. Let no one tell us solutions cannot be found to setbacks. After all, an iPad is only one piece of equipment. Motivation, knowledge, trust and relationship are the real tools of the work! #telepractice #speechies [Image: A woman is huddled under a desk. Her face is in shadow. 18.01.2022 SPT has recently partnered with Foster and Kinship Carers Association of Tasmania (FKCAT), in delivering the Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) Program. The collaboration is incredibly generous and supportive and exciting. We have been working online with a group of devoted foster carers on Tuesday mornings a really great group of thinking, reflective, open mums. The work is such good work warm, connected, honest, powerful, vulnerable, challenging, raw, fulfilling. We a...re all loving it. Additionally, one evening a week we have a mixed COSP group of foster carers and non-foster-carers everyone’s insights are expanded in new ways. Equally fabulous and online! We’ll be continuing to run these groups (via Zoom) for foster carers and non-foster carers in the middle eight weeks of each school term during 2021. There will be three different groups: Wednesday mornings, Tuesday evenings, and a very early morning group on Fridays. Stay tuned. Thanks a bunch, FKCAT. Such a pleasure!

17.01.2022 Closed syllables are one of six syllable types. This little bit of fun is lovely for reinforcing the concept of closed syllables to parents and learners - and teachers. #EarWorm https://youtu.be/dtjTQ14-yVU

16.01.2022 Notes from a session: Client: Young woman; super talented. And as it turns out, super resilient. Background: Client had written a piece of work, conceptually brilliant. She toiled over it because she understood the importance of the work. The marker of the work gave no attention to positives and pulled it apart. Not even constructive criticism. Nothing kind. What makes people forget to be kind? She was frustrated by this, but not defeated... ... Client: As you know, what I have to say is pretty good! Rosie: It makes me happy to hear you say that! That is confidence, young lady. Client: Well, I suppose it is! #resilience #bekind

16.01.2022 Question: Should one be concerned when this request gets circulated in the office? If anyone has a stray bag of Beetle legs, bodies and heads floating around could you please send them my way! #YIKES #colleagues

16.01.2022 Consider: Do you need to project your voice against background noise? Do you love to sing but feel hoarse afterwards? Do you talk all day long? Learn the essentials of healthy and effective voice usage with our fabulous Mariam in the brilliant Voice Care Essentials webinars (4 hours over 2 sessions). Starts 28 September. 09.01.2022 Megan Washington (Washington Music) is remarkable. 04.01.2022 "Once we know how to read, we read fast, recogni(s)ing a word in a fraction of a second. In fact, for most people, reading is not just easy, its automatic. You cant stop yourself from reading words that you see; they just jump off of the page and into your brain (and out of your mouth if youre reading out loud) To create these links, we need to be very good at two things: 1. breaking spoken words down into sounds (phonemic awareness) 2. knowing which sounds can be repre...sented by which letters (letter-sound knowledge" #PhonemicAwareness #LiteracyFoundations #100PercentLiteracy

04.01.2022 SPTs current Circle of Security parenting program is underway with a gorgeous little group. In a recent session Shark Music was explored that soundtrack to our lives of our past emotional experiences. When play is hit, the soundtrack can flood its way into our present and negatively affect our responses and behaviour. #CircleOfSecurity uses the concept of Shark Music to help parents explore how uncomfortable feelings left over from their own past experiences can i...nfluence their current relationship with their child, current responses to their child, and the way they think and feel about parenting. One of the participants of the program summed it up courageously from their own perspective (printed here with their permission): I think the thing that has been the biggest insight for me this session is how suddenly the Shark Music can appear! Its like in a scary movie where a curtain is pulled back and suddenly you see the axe murderer there and the terror is instant! The Shark Music can be that quick! Its not necessarily going to be a soft, gradual build up! Incredible insight! The program is running again in Term 4 more information here: https://spt.com.au/supporting-the-relational-base-of-langu/
