21.01.2022 Don't just talk to your child, talk *with* them. Research by Romeo, Leonard, Robinson et al., (2018) - researchers from Harvard and MIT - have confirmed what we have known all along...interactions matter. In their paper, the team demonstrated that children who engaged in more conversational turns (i.e., interactions or circles of communication) demonstrated greater left inferior frontal activation (Broca's area). Importantly, the relationship between interactional turns, lang...uage and brain development was more significant than the relationship between language, brain development and simple exposure to many words. Unfortunately we may feel the need to 'flood' our children with as many words as possible. However we now know that this isn't enough. We need to be engaging directly with them. Importantly, this paper has contributed insight into the relationship between neural processing, language and linguistic and cognitive development. How many times have you engaged with your child today? ttps://doi.org/10.1177/0956797617742725 #speechtherapy #speechpathology #communication #learning #kids #development #speechclinic #research #socialinteraction
21.01.2022 It is rare for research to learn about feelings of anxiety from children and adolescents with ASD themselves. More often than not, caregiver, teacher and therapist perceptions are used to understand how children and teens with autism are feeling. In their landmark, child-focused publication, Adams, Simpson & Keen (2019) provide us with valuable insight into just how challenging school may actually be for our children and teens on the Autism Spectrum. Their recent publication ...suggests that only 40-50% of children with ASD feel that others in their school environment can recognise their signs of anxiety. Children and adolescents with ASD may experience feelings of overwhelm due to the language, academic and social-interaction load of school. So while we are celebrating the end of the academic school year today, it is never too soon to be thinking about how we can help our new #teachers, #earlyeducators and #schools to recognise every child's signs of overwhelm, as we know their signs may be subtle and unique to them. 20.01.2022 Reading disabilities and written language disorders are subtypes of language-based learning disabilities (LLD) that frequently occur in childhood. Population-based studies by Katusic et al., (2001) and (2009), suggest that the incidence of RD ranges from 5.3% to 11.8% while the incidence for WLD ranges from 6.9% to 14.7% (depending on criteria used) respectively. Systematic reviews of the literature by McCormack et al., (2009) show that early history of speech sound disorder ...is also associated with later writing difficulties. What can be less known, is the incredible support and intervention that speech pathologists can provide for students that are experiencing academic difficulties with writing. A student's difficulties with writing may map to one or many of the skills outlined in this image. Contacting a speech pathologist if your child is experiencing writing difficulties can help with avoidance and frustration related to school-work, and can also ensure that written language instruction is provided in a way that is individually tailored for their language/literacy profile! #speechpathology #speechtherapy #devlangdis #languagelearningdisability #readingdisability #earlyintervention #writing #schoolsuccess #schoolSLP #slpbloggers #instaslp #speechclinic #slpsofinstragram #literacy #literacycoach

15.01.2022 We are heartbroken by the devastation Australia is currently facing. At times like these, we also begin to think of how we can help our children, especially those with diagnoses and learning difficulties, to understand the information around them or to process the events that they may be directly experiencing. Early Connections Alliance has developed a Bush Fire Social Story that may be helpful to share with children. Their resource can be downloaded and amended to suit your... family. Social Stories are a type of social learning tool that help information to be safely and meaningfully shared between parents, professionals, and people with autism of all ages. They may be one tool that families can use along with other approaches to help their children understand and process the events and information being viewed across media outlets. 13.01.2022 It is always interesting (and eye-opening!) to ask school-aged clients what their reading strategies are. As #wholelanguage reading approaches continue to dominate in #Australian and #Queensland #schools, strategies such as 'use the picture!' and 'think of a word that sounds the same!' continue to undermine the literacy success of children with #dyslexia, #languagelearningdisabilities and typical #reading abilities alike. While no specific reading approach may be perfect in i...solation, continuing to focus on explicit, systematic, synthetic phonics-based instruction is critical for ensuring that our children's literacy instruction is #evidencebased, #streamlined and #efficient to support their academic learning for years to come. For all those playing along at home, the correct answer is (b) sound it out (or apply the best phonics-based strategy). 11.01.2022 Fact - old approaches of memorising and copying lists of spelling words make me quite nervous. However, it cannot be denied that systematic, phonics-based spelling-instruction has its value. Why? Well as outlined by Ouellette and Sénéchal (2008), the value of spelling lies in its highly analytical nature that forces children to process each and every sound in a word. This positions the child to engage with both the phonology (sounds) and orthography (letter shapes) of the wor...d in greater detail than they would need to during reading alone. As a result, orthographic learning through spelling may result in representations that are more stable than would be achieved through reading (Conrad, 2008). As argued by Perfetti and Hart (2002), reading can occur with partial representations, however spelling cannot. In this way, spelling’s analytic nature can flow on to further benefit reading (Ouellette et al., 2013). Julius, M.S., Rivka, M.,Shecter-Nissim, Z., & Adi-Japha, E. (2016). 04.01.2022 Research continually points to the importance of the client-therapist relationship. In fact, work by Hubble, Duncan & Miller (2000) and Asay and Lambert (1999) suggests that the clinical relationship is the strongest predictor of positive therapy outcomes. Rapport, trust, honesty, transparency, and clear communication are all important parts of a clinical relationship. While we speech pathologists love to chat about evidence-based practice, homework between sessions and treatment intensity, it is so important to value our clinical relationship too! #speechtherapy #speechpathology #communication #communicationdevelopment #academicsupport #learning #learningdisability #kids #adolescents #speechclinic #speechtherapyideas #languagelearning #language
04.01.2022 On a day when we remember to ask each other, 'are you ok?' it is important to remember that those who are at heightened risk for mental illness may have trouble understanding and answering this very question. We know that children and teens with #developmentallanguagedisorders , #autism , #disabilities and #learningdifficulties are especially at risk for mental health challenges. 'Are you ok?' includes an auxiliary verb, abstract second-person personal pronoun, and an emotion...al-state adjective which requires emotional literacy and theory of mind to understand and be aware of the emotions in ourselves and others. So when you ask, 'are you ok?' try to ask in the best way to support a person's ability to understand and answer your question - whether that is through person-specific language, #symbols , #AAC , #PODD books or even single words. #mentalhealthawareness #areyouok #ruok #mentalhealth #disability #autism #comprehension #language #devlangdis #inclusion #communication #kids #children #adolescents #teen
