25.01.2022 Wanting a phonics program that takes a child sequentially from the introduction of sounds to the more advanced understanding of how sounds work together? The Sounds Write program provides this. This course can be accessed by parents for a fee through DSF. Otherwise some Speech Pathologists and teachers who have been trained in how to deliver this program offer private 1:1 tuition for children who are struggling to spell, read and / or write. #dyslexia #reading #spelling #difficulties #speech #pathologists

23.01.2022 The Importance of a well-developed Phonological Awareness Program in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Pre-Primary Studies show that children who are exposed to phonological awareness (P.A.) skills throughout these years will be significantly more prone to begin invented spelling by the end of the Kindergarten year. Invented spelling refers to a child attempting to sound out spoken words independently. They begin sounding out words trying to link their spoken word to their... current and developing knowledge of the written form. It has been found that developing the childrens P.A. skills and letter sound relationship may be important to ensuring that children begin school ready for formal reading and writing Children need to spend the early years listening to sounds in words. Initially, the children should be exposed to rhyme, then to clapping of syllables in words, listening to onset and rime(e.g. r _ at says rat), then to listening to sounds and blending them to make a word (e.g. r _ i _ p makes the word rip), and then to identifying the sounds within a word (e.g. what sounds are in the word bib Answer b_i _b). Phonological Awareness is regarded as a critical beginning reading skill as research shows repeatedly that children who enter the primary years with a clear and conscious awareness of sounds and their sequence have greater reading success than those children who cannot identify sounds within words. For ideas in how to develop your childs P.A. skills refer to Heggertys phonics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CWILLYWxUw
21.01.2022 The NEED for EARLY INTERVENTION for the struggling reader The trajectory of reading growth show that the differences between good and poor readers increase over time. Children who are able to crack the reading code early are more likely to: read more, develop a rich vocabulary, comprehend text more easily and engage in and read more stories and texts than the children who struggle to understand the link between the spoken and written form. ... The saying the rich get richer, and poor get poorer applies to the good and struggling reader if an effective reading intervention plan is not implemented in the early years of formal education. Without targeted and explicit literacy instruction children who are experiencing reading difficulties or children who are at risk of falling behind will be unable to take advantage of the cumulative spelling, writing and reading strategies that their peers are able to absorb. Hence, leaving them further behind. Evidence shows that in order to help the struggling beginning reader with understanding the foundational skills required for reading, intensive spelling and reading intervention is required. These children require further exposure in how the spoken word links to the written representation of the sound. Teachers are not acknowledging this in year 1 & 2, so by the time the child is in year 3 the child has not only fallen significantly behind but is also suffering low self-esteem. #dyslexia #perthspeechherapy #speech #pathologist #reading #difficulties
19.01.2022 I have attached a style of reading books that schools still provide to children as home readers. Be aware that this is NOT an acceptable reader for PrePrimary, year 1 or 2 children. It is called a predictable text and teaches kids to memorize. The text is repeated and the kids use the pictures for the clues. It does not teach them how sounds work together to make a word. If your child brings home a predictable text take it back and insist on a more suitable book for their reading level. #perthspeechtherapy, #speechpathologistsperth #dyslexia #readingdifficulties #spellingdifficulties #writingdifficulties
