25.01.2022 Posted @withregram @amyhume_voicecoach What most days look like these days - teaching 80+ students every week from in front of a laptop, instead of jumping between studios and rehearsal rooms. Zoom fatigue is real and so is vocal fatigue from teaching online. A *huge* number of people have been experiencing vocal fatigue and asking why its happening and how to prevent it. Its confusing - youre sitting at home, theres no background noise, so why on earth does your voice feel tired and strained at the end of the day?! The @theaustralianvoiceassociation has re-published my article How to use your voice when teaching online as part of their Covid-related resources, exploring why vocal fatigue is happening and how to avoid it. 23.01.2022 Speech Pathways remains open at this time for face to face consults in both locations. Some of the sessions have been moved to online sessions. If you are concerned, please be in contact. We take the health measures seriously and have completed the online training as recommended by the Australian Government and Department of Health. At both clinics, hand Sanitiser is at the entrance, which all clients will use on entering. We already implement high levels of hygiene and we w...ill now implement more. We will use gloves when needed, cleaning of desk and chairs and all things used in session will be cleaned with disinfectant wipes before and after. The aim is to stay safe. We are all in this together. #covid19 #health #speechpathwaysmelbourne #hygeineprotocol #keepingeveryoneassafeaspossible
22.01.2022 Loving the ingenuity of clients to sometimes bring the abstract of speech and communication into a visual format! Such a great tool for slowing down, being mindful and pausing for breath. #speechpathology #futurespeechpathologystudent #speechtherapy #communicationgoals #visuallearning
22.01.2022 Panic is something so often experienced by people before speaking-especially on live radio or TV. It can be terrifying to be in such a situation unprepared. Strategies around nervous system, breathing, voice and speech can dramatically affect our ability to gain and maintain ourSelves in these situations. Speech Pathologists are great at showing these techniques as well as delving deeper into the body-breath-mind-Speech connection.

14.01.2022 Completed Module Two of Dr Rosalba Courtneys @rosalbacourtnet Integrative Breathing Therapy: The Biochemical and Psychophysiological Dimensions a few weeks back in Sydney. It was incredible to delve deeper into the breathing mechanics, the chemicals and the psychology of breath with such a wondrous and varied group of practitioners. Of particular interest is how trauma affects the breath, and how anxiety may have a physiological basis. Such great practical ideas and stra...tegies to integrate into clinical practice straight away and have already been using them with clients. #breathingtherapy #vocology #vocologist #breathawareness #meditation #integrativebreathingtherapy #breathisfundamentalinspeech #breathiseverything #intermittenthypoxictraining

11.01.2022 Many people I see report that their speech or someone elses is lazy. I dont subscribe to this idea. These internal barriers need to become visible so that progress can be made in a positive direction. Success happens when these obstacles are removed. Awareness is everything.

07.01.2022 From Claudia Friedlander (posted on The New Forum for Professional Voice Teachers): "I recall seeing it argued either here or in one of the other teacher groups..., that it is fine for a teacher to play fast and loose with anatomical terms so long as their students improve. While at the time it bothered me, I didnt disagree. But Ive now concluded that I emphatically disagree. Teaching singing means teaching movements. Whether a teacher accomplishes this through demonstration, imagery, conceptual discussion, or a combination, learning only takes place when the student changes the way they are moving and coordinating their anatomy. Even if the student doesnt have a precise understanding of exactly what they engaged and how those movements changed, the teacher needs to understand it. And yes, there are things that we cannot fully know because only the singer can sense and play their own instrument. But if we have so poor an understanding of the anatomy and biomechanics that we misapply anatomical terms, were giving the student incorrect information. Even if in the moment it leads to come improvement, eventually each singer must be the custodian of their own instrument and growth, and having incorrect information take root can lead to other problems and misunderstandings down the road. I think that Body Mapping has made a big difference for many singers because sometimes just have a correct mental picture of what is actually happening can facilitate major growth. Theres no downside to understanding ones own anatomy. When a teacher uses incorrect terminology, one student might do very well with them because theyre good at imitating what the teacher is doing, but another student may tie themselves up in knots trying to move their anatomy in a way that it just doesnt go. Or the student who did well later encounters an issue that their distorted sense of their own biomechanics makes difficult to sort out. I also find myself retroactively disagreeing with the way Scott McCoy answered his own question at a NATS panel a couple of years ago in response to, How much anatomy does a voice teacher need to know? he suggested, Enough to avoid saying something stupid. That addresses my above concern that we not say things like Sing from your diaphragm! or use the terms glottis and epiglottis as though they are interchangeable. But its not enough for us to all be as competent as I feel we ought to be. If were going to do this professionally, there is a baseline of functional anatomy that we should be required to master. Im considering the traditional arguments against it and I dont think they hold up. It is true that there have been great teachers in the past, as well as great teachers currently practicing, who have trained world-class artists without understanding anatomy or describing things in accurate anatomical terms. The fact that their studios produced great artists doesnt make it acceptable, because we dont know how many other singers passed through their studios, paid the same hourly rate, worked just as hard, but didnt get the same results. We dont know how many of those students might have achieved more had they received the information with a more structured and factual delivery, i.e. not just having to imitate what the teacher was doing but also receiving a practical, accurate description of how they are doing it and the steps that led to their acquiring this ability. It is true that singers have different learning styles and that some may have a tendency to overthink things, but that is not a valid reason to shield them from information about how their own instruments work. Provide the information and teach them to apply it in productive rather than counterproductive ways. And it is also true that our faculties are populated by teachers who never learned anatomy but have spent their careers passing on the information they received from whatever pedagogical lineage they came from. I am not suggesting that they retire or even that they be required to study anatomy now. What I am suggesting is that we no longer perpetuate this highly problematic situation and that going forward we insist on a baseline of knowledge. Not through any kind of certifying program I dont think there can be a useful set of qualifying criteria that would work across the board. Just through common sense. Insist that teachers be able to both articulate and demonstrate their approach to technique. Look for some evidence of success in the studio and pedagogical curiosity before you consider hiring some retiring star performer. Otherwise we continue to perpetuate this situation where people think its this big mystery why some singers improve and others dont, where when a singer fails to excel it is always their fault rather than the teachers, and where it continues to be acceptable for some teachers to act out their insecurities by behaving in territorial and abusive ways towards their students. I can think of no other endeavor where learning relies on movement where a teacher or coach would not be expected to have a functional understanding of anatomy. Because so many of the movements involved in singing are internal, invisible, and hard to directly feel, it is that much more important for us to have this understanding. Paradoxically, because these movements are internal, invisible, and hard to directly feel, some teachers feel that they can get away with pretending that the information is unknowable, unimportant, or counterproductive. Some of those teachers may still end up helping to train great artists, but I would argue many of their other students will be left adrift, through no lack of aptitude or commitment on their part."
07.01.2022 If you are wanting to develop breath control and strength, you might like to try an inspiratory breath trainer. I have several for sale. If you do purchase, I would send via the post and will provide a short session online as to get the most out of the device. I have the classic plus (blue) so for the "average" persons breathing. It is a good and strong breath work out. Ideally done daily. PM Sarah for more details.... Stay safe. Keep nose breathing!!
06.01.2022 On World Mental Health Day (10/10) it is important to appreciate that speech pathologists improve a person’s communication and swallowing skills so they can fun...ction physically, socially and mentally at home, in the classroom, in the workplace, in social situations and in mental health treatment programs. Speech pathologists are an important part of the mental health team. Speech pathologists diagnose communication and swallowing disorders and, as part of the mental health team, can play an important role in diagnosing mental illnesses. They also help to determine whether communication or swallowing difficulties are part of the current mental health issue or whether there is an underlying communication/ swallowing disorder. They then develop appropriate targets to help overcome difficulties and help the person understand and participate in their treatment.
