24.01.2022 Interesting talk with ENT Dr David Mackintosh and Orthodontist Dr Bill Harrell about the intersection of these 2 fields. There was discussion of old ideas, such as the association between dental and airway problems, as well as new ideas, like using technology to identify people at risk of sleep apnoea. The topic of early intervention in orthodontics was discussed... likened to taking a wait and see approach with club foot, a deformity that we rarely see because it is de...alt with swiftly and effectively in infancy. Unfortunately many parents are still being counselled by health professionals to wait till their children are teenagers before they have their dental problems assessed or fixed. At this point, most of their jaw growth is complete, long-held habits will be more difficult to correct and many will have lived for years with a host of airway-related symptoms (daytime sleepiness, being labelled lazy, stunted growth, learning difficulties, prolonged bed-wetting, poor relationships due to frequent irritability, even bullying due to looking different)... all of which could have been prevented. The crucial function of the tongue was also discussed, and the important work of the orofacial myologists - in rehabilitation after ENT surgery and in conjunction with orthodontics.

16.01.2022 Snoring and noisy breathing while sleeping is a big concern in childhood because sleep disordered breathing can affect growth, learning and development.

15.01.2022 The lower central incisor teeth tilted inwards appears to be an indicator of tongue tie - the tongue pulling the teeth inwards. This is an example of how the tongue can affect teeth. I have seen a similar case- the baby teeth were tilted, the child's tongue tie was released and the adult teeth came in straight a year later.

14.01.2022 Do you know what "Developmental Language Disorder" is? We all should, as it is estimated that 2 children in every Kindy classroom has it. To put this into perspective, the prevalence of Autism is 1 out of 54 children. https://en.wikipedia.org/wi/Developmental_language_disorder

09.01.2022 This is hugely important - during eating, learning and doing therapy. I have a Leander chair in my office. It is similar to the more common Stokke Tripp Trapp chair. It is an investment worth making.
