24.01.2022 Speed Clinics Taylah had improved her power snatch technique immensely as soon as we changed to the thinner, 15kg bar. Better feel in the hand and more confidence through the pull and above the head. Definite progression to heavier weight through this season with this movement. Very happy coach.

24.01.2022 Speed Clinic athlete Jessica Payne, continuing her stellar season. Today claiming the Australian Junior Womens 200m title with 2 massive personal bests. First Aussie across the line in 24.04 (after a scintillating heat run of 23.94). Special thanks goes to the network of people behind me. People such as Nick Fiedler, Peter Benifer, Dylan Hicks, Latif Thomas and Marc Mangiacotti for all the little things over the years to help compliment my coaching techniques.

24.01.2022 4 Science-based superfoods you should be eating Posted by Kamal Patel (www.examine.com) on Mar 24, 2015 Superfood is a popular buzzword. Whether the latest fad is imitating Native American corn preparation techniques or eating way too many bananas, most superfoods are just another failed silver bullet, disappointing everyone that bought into the hype in hopes of discovering a shortcut.... The Examine.com editors have come up with a short list of foods that may actually qualify as superfoods, based on existing evidence. Garlic Garlic has strong evidence to suggest it can improve circulatory health by facilitating blood flow, reducing blood pressure, and improving cholesterol levels. Garlic also provides antioxidant benefits because it supports the activity of glutathione, an antioxidant enzyme. There is also evidence to suggest garlic consumption may ward off upper respiratory infections. It even has an anti-cancer effect. Eating or supplementing one to two cloves of garlic a day is one of the healthiest habits you can have. Dark berries Dark berries, including blueberries, are a rich source of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins have antioxidant properties and can reduce DNA damage related to oxidation and stress. Older people can take dark berry supplements or eat dark berries to improve memory. Though the mechanism behind this effect increasing a growth factor called BDNF could potentially work for young people as well, more research is needed to confirm this effect. Spirulina Spirulina is a blue-green algae with a 55-70% protein content. It is safe to supplement and provides an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. Studies suggest supplementing spirulina can increase bile acid blood levels, a characteristic of Gilberts Syndrome. People with Gilberts Syndrome are at lower risk for diabetes and obesity, as well as cardiovascular and neurological disease. Animal research suggests spirulina may also be neuroprotective, but studies on people are needed to confirm this effect. Unfortunately, spirulina is the worst-tasting supplement on this list. Leafy greens Leafy green vegetables contain high levels of nitrate. In fact, beets have so much nitrate, beetroot juice is a legitimate ergogenic aid and pre-workout supplement. All leafy green vegetables have relatively high nitrate levels, so picky eaters even have some wiggle room. Nitrates also improves blood flow by dilating blood vessels. Eating nitrate sources daily will help lower blood pressure over time. Dont listen to the hype New superfoods are almost always too good to be true. Dont rely on the media to tell you about new discoveries in the world of food and nutrition. Read the study, and not just the abstract! Avoiding fads and hype will save you money in the long run. Instead of looking for a shortcut, pick a couple real superfoods to add to your diet, and slowly make changes to your lifestyle habits over time.

22.01.2022 Motivating Female Athletes To Be More Aggressive and Exert Maximum Effort By Dr. Haley Perlus Many coaches seek me out to offer guidance on motivating female athletes to be more aggressive and overall competitive. Today, although there are many examples of females reaching new athletic heights and gaining respect in sports, certain codes of acceptable behavior and gender norms still exist. For many female athletes who still arent sure what they want to achieve in sport, to a...Continue reading

18.01.2022 Speed Clinic's Jessica Payne, winning the 2nd richest footrace in Australia ($20,000!), on December 28th in the 130th running of the Bay Sheffield. Improving approximately 5-6 metres from the same time last year when she finished 3rd in the final. See the link to the video on YouTube below https://youtu.be/Dbqc6nKZwJU

17.01.2022 Speed Clinics mantra...

16.01.2022 Jess' heat run and pb of 23.94. First time under 24 sec for the 200m. This ranks her 5th in Australia over 200m for Under 20. A few of those girls ranked above Jess are also Under 18 athletes.

14.01.2022 Following on from last weeks post on Speed Development: thanks again to Coach CJ Easter for this great work. 4 Stages of Speed Development (Part 2) Stage 2: Strength After a solid base of movement is developed, the next stage of the athlete development model is to progressively overload these movements to build strength. An athletes strength determines the amount of force that they can create, so strength to body weight ratio has a high correlation to their speed. And proba...bly more importantly, strength also determines the amount of force that an athlete can safely absorb, so strength is a huge factor in injury prevention. None of the stages of this model are mutually exclusive. Proper movement mechanics and strength should be developed simultaneously because many movement issues come down to lacking strength through the full range of motion. There are 3 planes of movement/strength that we develop in the model: 1) Sagittal planar movements These are mainly your up and down and straight ahead movements. Progressively overloading movements such as squats, deadlifts, and lunges develops strength in this plane. Strength in this plane is commonly reflected on the playing field in an athletes vertical jumping ability or straight line sprinting. 2) Frontal planar movements These are mainly your side to side movements. Progressively overloading movements such as lateral lunges develops strength in this plane. Strength in this plane is commonly reflected on the playing field in an athletes ability to change direction. 3) Transverse planar movements These are mainly your rotational movements. Progressively overloading movements such as medicine ball throws develops strength in this plane. Strength in this plane is commonly reflected on the playing field in an athletes ability to throw or swing an object. There are also 3 phases of strength that are important to develop: 1) Concentric strength Concentric strength refers to the force exerted by a muscle as it shortens. Concentric strength largely determines an athletes ability to create force or speed up, so it is a major factor in skills that require rapid force production such as sprinting, jumping, or swinging/throwing. 2) Eccentric strength Eccentric strength refers to the force exerted by a muscle as it lengthens. Eccentric strength largely determines an athletes ability to absorb force or slow down, so it is a major factor in deceleration, change of direction, and injury prevention. 3) Isometric strength Isometric strength refers to the force exerted by a muscle to maintain a certain length against resistance. Isometric strength largely determines an athletes ability to maintain a position, so it is a major factor in contact sports in which an athlete must maintain leverage against an opponent leaning in or pushing into them.

14.01.2022 Great Osteo in the West of Melbourne, top therapist, top person and well worth the trip for treatment. Highly recommend!

14.01.2022 Taylah Perry, crossing the line easily ahead if the field in a personal best performance and biggest win if her 12 month career. This day 12 months ago, Taylah commenced her Pro Running career at this very venue. A year on and now the champion.

14.01.2022 Annalise on her first night of wickets like Nick as seen below. Definitely needing a larger spacing and didnt quite nail the foot placement between the wickets but executing a better high velocity movement compared to her non wicket runs over the same distance. Annalise is a work in progress and we are working her back to national level heptathlon over the next 12 months.

12.01.2022 This is exactly what I have observed in all athletes (especially soccer), a severe lack of "athleticism". My role is to build the athletic capacity through strength, stability, force production, mobility etc. One of the biggest factors I have observed, is the lack of deceleration ability. One has influence on the other,l so the vast majorityof my work is single step acceleration, progressing to the first 15m - 30m. Every player I have worked with, has made significant improvement to their acceleration/deceleration and as a consequence, become standout players. They outsprint their opponent, giving themself more time with the ball to deliver better passing or shooting abilities.

12.01.2022 Mikayla is transferring her gym work well to the track with wickets. Another one who executes better over the wickets that on the flat, but right on track to bring her back to high level competition over the next 12 months. Overall there were some really pleasing results from tonights training. Competition commences on Saturday so its time to start sewing all our skills together.

10.01.2022 Jess heat run and pb of 23.94. First time under 24 sec for the 200m. This ranks her 5th in Australia over 200m for Under 20. A few of those girls ranked above Jess are also Under 18 athletes.

08.01.2022 Here is Nick on his first night of wickets. A very impressive movement considering hes been off playing footy through the winter and has missed a lot of our development work. Great cadence, lovely strong position and high velocity position with the foot striking below the hips.

06.01.2022 So proud as a coach, its finally sinking in, the goal we set at the start of the season have become reality. Whilst it didnt always go to plan, we had a bit of luck fall our way and the rest was up to Taylah to execute the perfect race. That was in fact the goal and instruction prior to the race. Discipline and perfection for each and every step down the track. And that she did! The race of her life, in a faultless performance, she nailed the start, great drive phase, got to top speed, remained balanced and relaxed, then maintained her speed and form all the way to the line to win by 0.05 sec.

05.01.2022 Last race of the training session...

05.01.2022 Speed Clinic athlete Taylah Perry in the local paper reporting on her recent success at The Stonnington Gift

04.01.2022 Another very successful Rye Gift... 2014 won by Jessica Payne, 2015 won by Taylah Perry. She may be small, but massive in heart and development. Young Luke Bain put in an excellent finish in his U20 800m with a win on the line, this too following the efforts of last years winner, Lorna Clark. The Speed Clinic crew certainly produced some outstanding results today.

04.01.2022 Opening round of Athletics Victoria Shield Competition today, so pretty excited to be coaching on race day again. We have no expectations for today as the sprinters are at the end of a heavy phase of training and a couple of them competed in the Regional Championships yesterday. The middle distance athletes will be putting into practice some of the tactics we have been working on over winter so we can refine the skills of racing in preparation for State Schools Championships ...next week and the lead up to Victorian All Schools Championships next month. Ill keep you posted on their progress. Also, I am in the stages of developing and testing a Speed Clinic App for Android, so as it evolves and I am happy with it, I will release it on Android and IOS so I can keep you better informed of what is happening here at Speed Clinic. Good luck to all other competitors today and welcome in the new season!

02.01.2022 Took some time out whilst on holiday to spend time with the Port Vila Fire Ants Rugby League Team as they prepare to take on Santo at the end of September, which also doubles as the Vanuatu National Team selections. Took the opportunity to finally wear a precious Melbourne Storm Game Jersey that I managed to win at auction last year... This Jersey (number 2) was worn by Young Tonumaipea in the Game against the Warriors 2016. Round 4 from memory.

01.01.2022 Well, a very good start to the season so far. The Speed Clinic Team have completed at 3 VAL events so far this season and weve come away with 5 wins. Daniel managed a rare double today with a Restricted 70m win then making the final of the Open 70m (very next race) then backed up to win the U17 100m in very heavy conditions. Celeste and Luke (his training partners) both making the same final. This is Celestes first final in the VAL, so even more reason to be extremely proud of these dedicated and hardworking young athletes.

01.01.2022 Jessica and Mikayla after their impressive race wins in Albury on the weekend.
