14.01.2022 Saturday 12th December the RFBAQ handed over a Landcruiser fire truck to Fassio Road Rural Fire Brigade. In Queensland we have 1,400 RFB’s and of them less than... 600 of them have one or more trucks. This is the first of 8 Landcruisers that are being given to Rural Fire Brigades without a truck and all have been funded by donations. The vehicle has been designed by volunteer firefighters in Queensland specifically for volunteer firefighters in Queensland and was manufactured by a Queensland company, Quikcorp Fire Engineering. Each Landcruiser with the suspension upgrade and fit out costs $120,000. Fassio Road Rural Fire Brigade is a Primary Producer brigade in the Mareeba Shire. The brigade has 13 firefighters and a total of 28 members. Current equipment is 6 mop up units and a trailer. Fassio Road RFB area incorporates the Hann Tableland National Park, which adjoins a large fruit and small cropping area to the north west of Mareeba. The Brigade is active in supporting mitigation strategies with the associated landowners. Fassio Road is also highly active in supporting Paddy's Green and Biboohra RFB's as the closest neighbours, responding to fires and contributing to planned burns. The keys to the vehicle were handed over by the new local RFBAQ Rep, Barry Child and the long time local RFBAQ Rep who has just stood down John Thomson to the 1st Officer of Fassio Road RFB, Timothy Lovell. At the same handover ceremony the local Rural Fire Service Inspector Neil Parker awarded Max Hubner, 1st Officer of Paddy’s Green RFB his QFES Diligent and Ethical Service medal and the National Medal. (Max was pictured with his granddaughter Emily and Neil Parker) Inspector Parker also used this as an opportunity to sit under a tree and ask brigade members what additional equipment they needed. The RFBAQ are lobbying the Fire Service and Government to make fit for purpose Landcruiser fire trucks available to brigades in addition to the currently supplied Ford Ranger utes with mop up units.

13.01.2022 Amber wrote and recorded this song 10 years ago (2010) in dedication to her Mum and Dad, both Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers in the South Burnett, North Co...ast region, Queensland. Sadly, Amber's father passed away at an RFS community event held in Nanango 8 years ago where his wife Tracy, Amber’s mother, was to provide a bushfire awareness talk. His sudden passing devastated family members, his fellow firefighting crew, work colleagues, his mates and the community of Nanango. Amber, a volunteer firefighter herself, joined the RFS some 12 years ago when she turned 16, and wanted to pay tribute to her fellow Australian firies through her song "Fire Season Again", which she sings against the backdrop of the aftermath of a fire that over 30 local crews attended in November last year on Schellbachs Road, Kingaroy. Amber's daughter, Mikaylah, who you will see in the video, wants to grow up to become a fire fighter just like her mother, her father, her grandparents and her uncle. Amber and her family will continue to carry on her father’s legacy and love for the service. ’ When I am called to duty, God, Whenever flames may rage, Give me the strength to save some life, Whatever be its age. Help me to embrace a little child, Before it’s too late, Or some older person From the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert and Hear the weakest shout, And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out. I want to fill my calling and Give the best in me, To guard my every neighbour And protect his property. And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life, Please bless with your protecting My children and my wife. 11.01.2022 Emergency service responders rely on their families for support. So how is the wellbeing of families impacted? Behind The Seen has been involved in a study whi...ch shows concerning (but not surprising to us) outcomes. If the support structure at home is not solid, if families are not supported, then HOW do we build better support systems for first responders? For those academically inclined, the report has been published in the Journal of Loss and Trauma (link below). For a quick snapshot, see the image. Families of first responders have compromised wellbeing too. More support, research and education needs to be focused on the family as part of a TEAM. After all, families are the first responders to our first responders! Let's hope this research paper is a pebble that starts the ripple of recognition that the wellbeing of first responder families is compromised, and that they too need SUPPORT. https://www.tandfonline.com//abs/10./15325024.2020.1845020

05.01.2022 Hazard reduction burns Backburning Burning out What on earth is the difference???? HAZARD REDUCTION BURNS are carried out proactively prior to bushfire seaso...n to protect people and assets. They are often called planned or prescribed burns. Hazard reduction burns are planned well in advance, require a permit and are only conducted during favourable weather conditions to reduce fuel (vegetation) loads. BACKBURNING is a technique used when a fire is started intentionally along the inner edge of a fire control line during fire operations to consume fuel (vegetation) in the path of a bushfire. BURNING OUT happens when a fire is intentionally lit to consume sections of unburnt fuel inside a fire control perimeter to remove fuel, widen the control line and stop the progression of fire. The list goes on firebreak, mosaic pattern, strip lighting, spot lighting, head fire, heel fire, flank fire. This fire business can be seriously technical.
