11.01.2022 Early weaning Nearly all stations wean their calves off the cows. But there is plenty of debate about how light you should take the calves off mum. If you wean at too high a weight the wet cows fall in a condition hole, and if they survive, don’t give you a calf for 2 years. If you go too light you have a needy hungry calf to feed, which without the right gear will be a challenge The lighter you wean the better the cow condition, greater the impact on fertility and the f...ewer cows that need dry season supplement. It works, few will argue with this. So how sort the early weaners? People who plan ahead and have feeders, quality supplement, saved paddocks, machinery, quality hay, etc have no problems managing early weaners. Without the right gear it can be a disaster. Segregating the lighter and heavier weaners helps and allows you to provide the right supplement for each class of weaner. Early weaning is worth while and typically will increase the profitability of the herd. #HerdThat #Spektrum #SpektrumAgriBusiness #AgriBusiness

01.01.2022 The question on everyone’s lips. What will this wet season bring? Indications at this stage are for a good wet, with an above average starts in the North West, East and Central Australia. Weather prediction to Dec 2020 The remainder of the year is likely to see above average rainfall across the eastern two thirds of the country. October to December days and nights are likely to be warmer than average across parts of northern Australia. The Bureau's ENSO Outlook is now ...at La Niña, meaning a La Niña is underway in the tropical Pacific. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) index is within negative threshold values with most models sustaining these negative values into October. La Niña and a negative IOD typically increase the likelihood of above average rainfall across much of Australia during spring and early summer.
