11.01.2022 This weeks spotlight on dyslexic authors is Henry Winkler. Despite dyslexia making him feel ‘stupid’ for years, Henry Winkler went on to become a successful film and TV actor and bestselling author. His early hardships motivated him to not just succeed, but to appreciate his differences enough to write a book that would help educate others. To get started, try reading MY DOG’S A SCAREDY- CAT: A Halloween Tail is part of the Hank Zipzer series, which follows the adventures and... struggles of a kid who has dyslexia. On Halloween day, Hank comes to school dressed as a table in an Italian restaurant. The resident school bully thinks Hank’s costume is wimpy and that Hank wouldn’t know how to be scary and gross if his life depended on it. So Hank decides to create the scariest haunted house ever, and plans to invite the bully over to show him what scary really is. The only problem is that Hank’s dog, Cheerio, is scared of Hank’s haunted house. So scared, in fact, that when Hank tries to find him, he’s nowhere in sight! These books are available to be borrowed from the SPELD SA Library for members. They may also be in your local library. 04.01.2022 This is an important one to share with you from #TheChronicCouple There are three types of ADHD: * predominantly hyperactive-impulsive * predominantly inattentive * combined type... When most people think about ADHD, they think about people who are hyperactive, restless, impulsive, disorganized, or easily distracted. Another type of ADHD that many are unaware of is inattentive type. Unfortunately, many of these people never get diagnosed. Instead, they are labeled as lazy or unmotivated. For example, instead of hyperactivity, constant chatter, and conflict-driven behavior, inattentive ADHD folx tend to be quiet and distracted. Rather than cause problems in class as a child, they’re more likely to daydream or look out the window. They’re not often impulsive and are less likely to blurt out inappropriate things. People with this type may be seen as lazy, apathetic, or as someone who has a hard time finding interests or motivation in life. They can appear to make careless mistakes because they have difficulty sustaining focus, following detailed instructions, and organizing tasks and activities. This type also means being easily distracted and often losing things, leaving projects unfinished, and appearing not to listen when spoken to. What’s often confusing with Inattentive ADHD is that when we DO find a topic or task engaging, we can not only perform but excel at whatever that may be. We then recognize this and use it as our standard. So when we fail at a boring task, we can beat ourselves up because we then look at ourselves as lazy or weak. This is far from the case. We are trying our best. And for some of us, the word try entails a lot of hard work. So please remember that and be patient with yourself.
