24.01.2022 ‘Elder-mediation’ has been shown to produce positive results in combating elder abuse, but logistical and cultural barriers impact the accessibility of elder-mediation. These barriers mean that, for some older people, the road to help is sometimes slow and complicated. A new study led by Dr Craig Sinclair from the Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research in partnership with UNSW researchers, including the SPH’s Dr Adrienne Withall, identifies these barriers and how they may be overcome. 24.01.2022 Cervical cancer is a leading cancer and cause of premature death among women in Uganda aged 15 to 44 years. Researchers from SPH, James Henry Obol, Sophia Lin, Reema Harrison and Robyn Richmond, assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practice of cervical cancer prevention among health workers in rural health centres in rural health centres (HCs) in the Acholi sub-region of Northern Uganda. "Health workers from rural HCs in Uganda play a crucial role in cervical cancer prev...ention as they can reach a wider community, " say the authors. "Guidelines for cervical cancer prevention to rural health workers should be developed and disseminated to promote standardised cervical cancer prevention activities." The findings were published in BMC Cancer BMC and the research is part of an ongoing collaboration between UNSW and Gulu University. Read more:

21.01.2022 A ‘preventive’ health strategy must confront hard truths to improve health and wellbeing. In the SPH submission towards the development of the Australia’s National Preventive Health Strategy, we emphasise the need to: Address inequities as one the biggest obstacles to improving population health, including systemic racism and discrimination. Address the priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People at every step of the Strategy, by directly consulting a...nd partnering with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and Aboriginal community-controlled organisations. Apply a population health lens - which recognises the social, historical, economic, cultural, and environmental impacts on a person’s and community’s health and wellbeing. Recognise the impacts of rapid urbanisation, the climate change emergency, gender-based/domestic violence, injury and poor mental health. Promoting health and wellbeing is not only common sense because it is proven to help people live longer and healthier lives and to save health costs it is the right thing to do with tremendous humanitarian, social, environmental and community benefits.
