25.01.2022 Micro or mini workouts are a great way to get a workout in if you don’t have much time. Here’s a 5 minute workout you can repeat a number of times over the day. They are particularly effective if you have a desk job, because it will get the blood jumping and muscles worked, particularly if you can do one every hour.



22.01.2022 Our sternocleidomastoid muscles (SCM)are long thick muscles in the neck. They extend from the base of the skull, behind the ears and jaws, and finish down at the collarbone. They allow rotation of the head side to side , tilting the head to bring the ear to the shoulder, & flexing the head forward so the chin touches the chest. Pain felt in these muscles can be due to overuse, such as when craning your head forward when working on the computer, but can also occur from carr...ying a heavy object in an awkward position, tension or injury in the other muscles of the shoulder or neck, or even sleeping in a different position. A study looking at people who flex their neck 15 degrees forward, which is the common position where people use a mobile phone, found that it increases the weight of the head to 12kgs. Imagine putting a 12 kg weight on your head and holding it there while you text on your phone for 1/2 hour. Some of the symptoms of injured SCM, can be ear pain, pain above the eyes, dizziness, nausea, throat pain, headaches, sinus or nose pain, neck stiffness and tingling in the face or neck. Adjusting a workstation so the computer is at eye level, lifestyle changes where bad posture is addressed, and being aware of strengthening the lhyoid muscles will all help to address the pain. As with muscles anywhere in the body, if there is muscle imbalance, there will often be pain. Stretches and strengthening exercises can help to restore function in the neck.
